I assume its to help people fall asleep or just to have a calming effect.

Interesting. Both of those are probably Assur (if we define them as music). See the Beis Yosef in O.C. 560. Then you need to figure out if they qualify as music. If they’re just recordings of actual nature sounds it’s probably fine. If they’re computer-generated then they might be music, in which case it’s probably Assur (and probably Assur even for a non-Avel because then the Rama’s Heter goes away, though Shittas Rashi still exists).

The Gemara doesn’t consider soothing sounds Hashmo’as Kol in Hilchos Shabbos. That is not the greatest Raaya, but the simple Svara is that way, anyway. It might be called Shiras Habria but it’s not actual music.

If soothing, natural sounds would be a problem it would be Assur to stroll by a brook. You do find an Issur of Tiyul, strolling, in Hilchos Tish’a B’av, but I don’t know about Hilchos Availus. Regardless, a recording of a walk is not a walk.

If you may listen to a bird chirp or listen to a waterfall, a recording of such is no different. Hashem created those sounds, not Man. The recording is just that – a record of those sounds.
