Does a man have any obligation to daven with a minyan or can he simply daven in his house by himself whenever he feels like it?

Does a woman have any obligation to daven (the regular tefilos in the siddur) altogether? If there is an obligation, is it three times a day (like a man)?

Rav Moshe says it is a chiyuv, and I believe the Chasam Sofer held it was a D’orasia.

The Mishnah B’rurah mentions that a woman has a Chiyuv to Daven with a Minyan just like a man does.

There is definitely an obligation to daven with a minyan as the Gemara says that one has to go out of his way 1 mil to get a minyan. The question is, and if I may use a mashal, if tefilah is a cake, is davening with a minyan one of the ingredients or is it the icing? Is it an essential component or not? A nafka mina would be is one allowed to go on vacation if he knows he won’t be able to get a minyan. This is a machlokes among the poskim- I think R’ Shlomo Zalman says no but I think Ishei Yisroel brings down shitos who argue.

R’ Herschel Shachter shlita from YU holds it is icing on the cake and R’ Aharon Lichtenstein shlita once said that was young he would miss minyan once in a while in order to help his wife with their young children. R’ Immanuel Feldman shlita, fromer Rav in Atlanta, would sometimes daven Maariv by himself because since the minyan would always wait for him, it put pressure on him and hurt his kavanah. So, once in a while he would daven by himself so he could talk to G-d without any distractions.

But I think all would agree, that if there is no valid reason, one is not allowed to miss minyan. No one would say that he can daven in his house whenever he feels like it.

popa: What’s your take? I saw an old post of yours saying that its okay to miss minyan. (Or at least not so bad. Talking about bochorim waking up late or vacationing.)

The power of minyan is so great that even if one doesn’t have his zechusim the power of a ztibur pulls him through.

I must say that getting up during the week to daven in shule is a personal struggle, but I always feel that my day starts off better if I go to shule. So, I go – but it’s not easy.

There are only 2 Halachic instances, where Davening BiYechidus supersedes Davening with a Minyan:-

    1) If one is about to embark on a long distance trip, even if he will arrive at the destination in time for that same Tefiloh, and be able to get to a Minyan at his destination, he should still pray that service prior to embarking on this trip, even though BiYechidus [assuming he cannot get to a Minyan before embarking on that trip].

    2) Mincha MUST be prayed before sunset:- Period!!!!! Even if this entails davening Mincha before sunset BiYechidus verses davening Mincha after sunset with a Minyan. The Mishnoh Beruroh is so emphatic about this Halocho, that there is simply no way around this one.

Just about every other situation, falls aside in deference to Davening with a Minyan. This includes:-

Vasikin BiYechidus verses a Minyan later [but before 1/3 of the day]

Early Maariv with a Minyan verses Maariv BiZemano biYechidus

Schacharis before sunrise with a Minyan verses shacharis after sunrise biYechidus

Mincha on Friday Chanukah before candle lighting biYechidus verses after Chanukah candle lighting with a Minyan

In all of these situations a Minyan overrides the other preference.

Even Tartei deSasrei with Mincha & Maariv at a Minyan overrides davening them BiYechidus at different time frames.

What if you woke up late for work, and there is a later minyan though it will cause you to be unacceptably late to work or yeshiva? Are you still required to go to minyan and be late to work or yeshiva?

147 – Re your 2nd point – there is a way round it actually. You can be noheg like the Mechaber and the Remo who both hold you can daven Mincha after sunset. Nusach Sefard (especially Chasidim) hold like this.

Also do you have a mokor that minyan overrides tartei desasrei?

I think there is a question in the mishna berurah if davening biyechidus in the beis hamedrash that you learn in is preferable to davening with a minyan in a shul

there seem to be two factors regarding davening with a minyan, one is that with a minyan you have the zechus of the tzibbur, the mephorshim explain this does not just mean that you have the merits of the tzibbur but also it means that the tzibbur is always misdabek beratzon Hashem whereas an individual might not be so if you make yourself part of the tzibbur then you are automatically misdabek beratzon Hashem. The other factor seems to be something along the lines of the ramban at the end of parshas Bo who says that the tachlis habriyah is that we should stand in a minyan and be modeh to Hashem be’rabim that beriyoseachah anachnu.

Rav Chaim Kanievsky wrote in his Sefer that it is better to daven beyichidus with a hat than in a minyan without a hat.

that would only seem to apply if for you it is a bizayon to daven without a hat

147- R’ Willig holds that one should not daven with a minyan if it’s a tartei desasrei problem. The question is, which tefilah do you daven beyechidus?

avhaben- I don’t know about yeshivah, but in terms of work, R’ Schachter says that since the din is you have to go a mil (which is 18 minutes) out of your way for a minyan, which is essentially 36 minutes if you count both ways, that means halachically you are required to incur up to a 36 minute loss for minyan. More than that you aren’t required to do.

Rav Chaim said so regarding the hamon hoam (i.e. everyone.)

Avhaben: You mean R’ Chaim said it for the Hamon Am in B’nei B’rak where one who would be Davening without a hat would have a tremendous lack of Kavod Hatzibbur.

No, he didn’t qualify it to only BB. In fact, the shaila was asked to him by someone from outside BB. And Rav Chaim published it as a letter in several of his Seforim. Rav Chaim doesn’t publish local ordinances in his Seforim.

It has to depend on the demographic of the person he is answering the shaaloh to or who he is expecting to learn his sefarim. Obviously Avraham Avinu did not wear a hat for davening. For the yeshivisher olam wearing a hat is equivalent to being dressed properly.

Davening with a minyan *is* an obligation.

However I myself have several issues that prevent me from making it to a minyan as often as I should.

I have heard enough shiurim and read enough about this that it is my understanding davening in a minyan is much more significant than davening alone. Enough so, that I try to do whatever I can to make a minyan each time I daven. If one is going to daven, it is worth the effort to make it count as much as possible and not to mitigate the impact of one’s prayers by davening alone. I want to add that one should try to find the right minyan that goes at a comfortable pace so as not to compromise davening with kavana.

    Hatzlacha!

In today’s fashion conscious world, wouldn’t a decent tie & jacket be just as incumbent if not more incumbent than a hat?

No-one would walk into a job interview with a hat but no jacket & no tie.
