I hate the smell of yogurt. Doesn’t make a difference which flavor. The smell nauseates me.

Every morning I go to work with a car and there are another few people in the car with me. One of them will eat a yogurt for breakfast every morning. This person knows that the smell makes me vomit but he will eat it anyway. The entire car gets that horrible smell so even if I don’t sit right next to that person I can still smell it.

Why can’t this person eat it at home? It doesn’t take that long to eat a small yogurt! Or how about when we get to work? Honestly, I don’t understand him. I don’t want to tell him anything outright because I don’t want to sound rude but I’ve told him countless times that I the smell bothers me.

    Any suggestions?

    tell him outright. Politely.

find a new group of people to carpool with, or bring a chop liver sandwich with lots of onions with you.

I love the smell of yogurt . So funny. Just because he knows you don’t like the smell does not mean he consciously knows he is upsetting you. Many people are more oblivious than we would like to believe. Say something!

Maybe bring a box of ziplock bags, to throw the yogurt container in so it won’t smell up the car? Bring a frebreeze or other air freshioner to give a quick shpritz, providing other people don’t mind and are not allergic.

Hey I always hated that smell too! Smells a bit like a dirty diaper.

But listen, if its not your car, you cant dictate what someone eats in it. If it is your car, then you can tell them politely that you hate the smell.

If it is your car, you can ask the person not to eat it in the car. If not, you can try to talk to him in a non-confrontational way, and ask if it is possible for him to eat his yogurt before carpool or wait until after, because you are allergic to the smell. If that does not help, the only things you can do are put men’s cologne on,especially under your nose, or find another carpool.

I agree with Fashionablee and Oomis, if it’s your car you can say something.Just a suggestion tho, when I was pregnant I was often ‘about to throw up’ and I used to carry a cinnamon stick with me. When any smell got overwhelming, I would smell the cinnamon and it would go away. (My first pregnancy I had to carry around toothpaste cuz only that would work, but only pregnant women can get away with that 🙂

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I’ll try and ask him politely to please not eat it when I’m around. It’s not my car so I can’t really tell him not to eat it. Finding a different carpool isn’t an option since the office where I work is in some real hick town. The only otherway to get there is by public transportation which takes 2 hours, 3 trains, and a busride.

Maybe appeal to the driver of the car? Ask him if he can make a “no smelly foods” rule or something. Otherwise, bring on the chopped liver sandwiches.

Syag’s story reminds me that One Yom Kippur I felt sick toward the end of the day and then someone passed around bisamim to make a bracho on and that made me feel a little better so I kept smelling it all through Neilla every time I felt like I was “about to throw up”
