Yale University’s logo contains a Hebrew slogon. I understand they’ve been using it for several centuries. Other universities too, I believe, have Hebrew slogons. Anyone know how this came about and why?

Serious American students of theology and divinity, particularly in New England, regarded Hebrew as a classical language, along with Greek and Latin, and essential for study of the Old Testament in the original words. The Reverend Ezra Stiles, president of the College from 1778 to 1795, brought with him his interest in the Hebrew language as a vehicle for studying ancient Biblical texts in their original language (as was common in other schools), requiring all freshmen to study Hebrew (in contrast to Harvard, where only upperclassmen were required to study the language) and is responsible for the Hebrew words “Urim” and “Thummim” on the Yale seal. Stiles’ greatest challenge occurred in July 1779 when hostile British forces occupied New Haven and threatened to raze the College. Fortunately, Yale graduate Edmund Fanning, Secretary to the British General in command of the occupation, interceded and the College was saved. Fanning later was granted an honorary degree LL.D., at 1803,[17] for his efforts.”
hope that helps…
March 20, 2012 1:27 pm at 1:27 pm #883756BTGuyParticipantAs far as I know, there are a few reasons.
In the Ivory League they consider Hebrew as a classical language along with l’havdil, Latin.
Also, the founder of Yoel University, I believe, was very fond of Hebrew and Jews, from an intellectual standpoint.
Additionally, the university may be the first, but it originates from back in the day when Xtians were more fond of and showed more reverence for what they call the Old Testament, and all that is involved.
Harvard, too, I believe has Hebrew somewhere in their logos.
March 20, 2012 1:27 pm at 1:27 pm #883757RSRHMemberMany old universities began principally as schools of divinity, i.e., Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, University of Paris, ect. Following the Protestant Reformation, many, many Protestant scholars began studying Jewish texts in the original Hebrew/Aramaic in order to recover the real origins of Christianity, free from Papist corruptions. For example, Isaac Newton, in addition to being one of the most famous physicists ever, was also a serious hebraist and scholar of rabbinic literature. Many of these hebraist scholars formed the nucleus of new universities like Harvard and Yale, so it is no surprise that the founders of Yale would choose to include the words “urim v’tumim,” the symbol of enlightenment and discovered knowledge, on the university seal.

March 20, 2012 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm #883762hershiMemberWhy did the Ivy League’s choose Hebrew over other classical languages (like Latin) for their motto?
March 20, 2012 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #883763nitpickerParticipantveritas means TRUTH

PBA, thank you for that “truthfulness”
LOL :>
March 20, 2012 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm #883765ItcheSrulikMemberhershi: You mean “other” classical languages. Most did choose Latin. Very few choose greek because classical Greek sounds like you’re talking with your mouth full of spit plus it has a ? which English speakers avoid like the plague (notice how even the Hebrew mottoes don’t have it.)
March 20, 2012 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #883766yehudayonaParticipantItche, when I studied classical Greek, I was told that today we really don’t know how it was pronounced. Where do you get the idea that it sounds like you’re talking with your mouth full of spit?
March 20, 2012 5:11 pm at 5:11 pm #883767netazarParticipantYou should check out the Columbia University seal. What do you think of that?
