What actions (or lack thereof) cause one to forget ones learning?
The most prominent example that comes to mind is leaving a sefer open unattended.

February 5, 2012 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #1215754i love coffeParticipantI also heard that if you put your clothes on backwards other than for tznius purposes, it causes one to forget their Torah.
Another is, sleeping with your socks on. (Then how do all the people sleep without freezing in the winter?) IDK.
February 5, 2012 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm #1215755smartcookieMemberPutting on 2 pieces of clothing at once.
Eating olives.
February 5, 2012 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm #1215756Think firstMemberEating olives more than once in 30 days.
Putting on two articles of clothing at once
Eating from the pot that food was cooked in
I can’t tell u sources for these, however I grew up with these.
February 5, 2012 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #1215757ToiParticipantgo check out the sefer shmiras haguf vihanefesh (hanefesh vuhaguf?). I went through t once and dont remeber a thing. ironic no?

February 5, 2012 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #1215759yitayningwutParticipantI think that olives is a mistake. The Gemara in Berachos (35b) says that olive OIL, when swallowed without anything else, is dangerous for a person. If there is such a thing, I would guess it applies only to that. (If olives were truly not good for a person then why would one make a bracha on them?)

The gemara in Horayos 13 has a list of things which makes it hard to learn.

I forget 🙂

February 5, 2012 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #1215766ToiParticipantyit- its mivuar that olives are bad for remembering your learning if eaten often, but olive oil is good for it. the gemara says that if your marbeh bishemen you get chachmah. theres even a pshat in chumash that yaakov avinu had olive oil in his mateh, and he drank it to help his learning.
February 5, 2012 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #1215767ToiParticipantsam4- isnt walking in between 2 women beause of AZ?
February 5, 2012 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #1215768sam4321ParticipantYitay: Its a gemara in Horayos that one should not eat olives and drinking olive oil restores ones learning(berachos 35 where does it say that)?

February 5, 2012 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #1215772147ParticipantWhen you finish 1 Massechto in Daf Yomi, take a break from Daf Yomi to reveiew the Massechto you just terminated. Seeing the Gemorro some 30-60 days later instead of 2711 days later will be very good to cirumventing forgetfullness.
Knowing even 1/4 of Shas even 1/2 resonably well, will work far more wonders for you than just tipping the ice berg of everything in 1 ear out the other ear.
Follow this advice, and continue enjoying your Zayis + 14 other fruit come Tuesday nite/Wednesday Hamisho Ossor b’Shevat.
February 5, 2012 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #1215773longarekelMemberR’ Chaim Kanievsky put out a sefer with a list of things that are kashe l’shikcha.(btw he himself said that he forgot to mention all of them). someone here mentioned wearing socks while sleeping and eating from a pot that food was cooked in. i never heard that and i would appreciate knowing a source, thanks. The gemara mentions quite a few but i wonder if that only applies to bavel or eretz yisrael. meaning, this sort of thing may depend on many factors and could change based on time and place. this would help explain why all this is not mentioned by rambam or shulchan aruch especially since doing something to forget one’s learning is an issur doraisa with severe consequences(avos 3-8)

Whole olives are ??? ?????. Olive oil is ??? ??????. Putting olive oil into olives is trying to break even.
February 5, 2012 10:14 pm at 10:14 pm #1215775☕️coffee addictParticipantRavshalom and mommamia,
I heard from R Leibel Katz that it doesn’t cancel out and you forget some thing and remeber other things more
February 5, 2012 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1215776sam4321Participantlongarekel: they might mean the case of the residue left on a spoon from stirring meat in the pot if eaten. The Ben Ish Chai discusses these things as well .

February 6, 2012 12:00 am at 12:00 am #1215780koillel101MemberThere are a lot of reasons why someone might forget their learning but not all are cuz of kasheh l’shickcha. some are more natural causes but one should be aware of them just the same
February 6, 2012 12:14 am at 12:14 am #1215781Derech HaMelechMemberAside from the piece in the sefer by Rav Chaim Kanievsky, I have also heard that he said that all the things that are kashe l’shikcha are worse for people with bad memories and all the things that are mo’il lizakaron work better for people with good memories. Or something like that.
February 6, 2012 4:24 am at 4:24 am #1215782yitayningwutParticipantI stand corrected on the olive thing (though as the Gemara says, olive oil counteracts it).

February 6, 2012 12:24 pm at 12:24 pm #1215784besalelParticipantLearning from an artcroll.
February 6, 2012 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm #1215785besalelParticipanti have found that when i learn out of a english translation of a sefer i tend to forget it quickly. when i learn from the original language and i need to think about the words in front of me actually say i remember it.
February 6, 2012 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #1215786Sam2ParticipantBesalel: Chas V’shalom. I remember the things that I learned from Artscroll better than those I learned from a normal Gemara. Artscroll is an incredible tool to learn how to learn for those who use it properly.
February 6, 2012 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #1215787besalelParticipanti used to hink artcroll did more harm than good. i have learned that i was deeply mistaken. i am maskim that artcroll is a valuable tool. in fact, i am leaning towards replacing my jastrow with an artcroll. artcroll certainly has its place in the bais medrash. but that is not the same issue i was addressing.

February 6, 2012 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #1215790twistedParticipantI find it impossible to fall asleep with socks on. Must be something else that disorders my treasure chest.
February 7, 2012 1:13 am at 1:13 am #1215791KnackeParticipantI think you’ll find that it’s actually sleeping with SHOES on, NOT socks thats the problem.
Also, i recall seeing, (obviously i can’t remember where!:) ) that one should also be makpid about little kids not to wear shoes whilst sleeping, please don’t ask me why, where, what or who!
Sheyirbeh zechuyoseinu!
February 7, 2012 1:20 am at 1:20 am #1215792KnackeParticipantAlso, if anyone has a source for not eating the ends of a chaloh,it would be very nice. My father, may The L-rd bless him,is a talmid muvhak of dayan veis (ba’al minchas yitzchok) from whom he garnered quite a few minhogim (aka chumrois!) so just out of interest, if anyone can help me find a mekoir i would be very grateful. Please donot tell me that reb chaim shlit”a says that theres no mekoir in his sefer-i know that already!!thank you klal yisroel -your an amazing bunch!-and may the redeemer come to zion speedily in our days and may The L-rd Elo*im wipe all tears from upon every face and may He bring a stop to all these tzorois!kol tuv!

February 7, 2012 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #1215795HaLeiViParticipantHow weird, sam4321, he makes up a reason (that doesn’t make sense) and uses that as if it is the reason, enough to say that it doesn’t apply anymore! It’s nice to find reasons, but to be that proud of your reason is silly.
I say that it doesn’t make sense, since the ends that touch are no less baked than the dough in middle of the bread, which is thicker, and therefore further from the heat.
Here’s another reason: The Mishna says that you have to leave Peya for the Shamash. Another one: I heard in the name of the Yaaros D’vash that the end represents the ‘outsiders’. And another yet: Since Chazal tell us that wheat gives Chochma we don’t want the fringes of Chochma.
February 7, 2012 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #1215796ED IT ORParticipantbesalel disable your spell check add-on or add artscroll
February 7, 2012 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #1215797sam4321Participanthalevi: I don’t disagree with you, there really is no source. I did see once a reason which cites a passuk in Iyuv(20:21) leaving over which is the opposite brings bracha.
February 7, 2012 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #1215798skiaddictMemberI know im my family we dont eat the ends of the challa because when we bentch and tell Hashem thank you for the food we want to show that we are satisfied and didnt need to eat every last drop, something like that.
February 8, 2012 6:33 am at 6:33 am #1215799i love coffeParticipantSorry guys, I dont have a source for the sleeping with socks on. It’s just one of those things that I hear. Just like how I heard that a woman shouldn’t sit at the edge of a table or else she won’t get married for 7 more years…???
February 8, 2012 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1215800Sam2ParticipantThe Aruch Hashulchan says somewhere (maybe that first Siman) that there is nothing more degrading for a person than sleeping in shoes (not socks). I don’t think it’s mentioned on the memory things though.
February 9, 2012 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1215801longarekelMemberSee Yoma 78 where sleeping with shoes is discussed. It is called ta’am misa. It applies to children as well.
