WHY DO PEOPLE LIE?? whats the point? i ask someone a q and they make up an answer whats the point?!?! its like asking someone their name and they tell u their friends name-why would someone do that??????
February 5, 2012 1:29 am at 1:29 am #849989☕️coffee addictParticipantwell 1 of two reasons
if they know the answer it’s because they don’t want you to know but they feel weird saying that
if they don’t know the answer they don’t want to look stupid and say “I don’t know”
February 5, 2012 1:38 am at 1:38 am #849990ED IT ORParticipantwhat’s the point of answering this post!
February 5, 2012 1:53 am at 1:53 am #849991yoyo56Memberdont answer! if u dont have an answer the person knows the answer its like asking someone what skool thjey go to is there a reason to lie????
February 5, 2012 2:10 am at 2:10 am #849992☕️coffee addictParticipantwhy not?
February 5, 2012 7:22 am at 7:22 am #849993LYEing? I was just going to explain that in most situations, a plunger works far better than lye. Lye is banned in many places anyway because it is dangerous and also used to make crystal meth, which is one of the few things even the Admou”r meCreedmoor would not touch on Peerim.
The word for sheker is spelled lying.
February 5, 2012 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #849994ZeesKiteParticipantThe OP was lying about how to spell it.
February 5, 2012 4:28 pm at 4:28 pm #849995ED IT ORParticipantmaybe the op was “lieing” down when it wrote it!
February 5, 2012 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #849996real-briskerMemberC’mon, You couldn’t think of a better question?
February 5, 2012 5:18 pm at 5:18 pm #849997cinderellaParticipantHere’s another question. Why shouldn’t we lie? Why does the Torah forbid it? If it doesn’t harm someone else, why can’t you?
I head a kiruv program and I was talking to one of the not religious girls there and she asked me this. I thought about it and couldn’t think of an answer so I called somebody and he told me this: The Torah is complete truth. Hashem is complete truth. So when you lie, you are going against the Torah and Hashem.
I don’t like this answer, anyone have a different one?
February 5, 2012 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm #849998HealthParticipantyoyo56 -cinderella-
The Torah says Everybody lies. It’s in Hallel. Now why is there such a big desire to lie? Simple because this is one of the easiest forms of manipulation. The other person wants you to think or do something that you wouldn’t have done without their lie(s)! Now why do people want to manipulate? This answer isn’t simple, but I’ll give a simple answer anyway. Because it feeds their Gaiva to control or be superior to others.
February 5, 2012 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #849999cinderellaParticipantI get that Health, but why is it considered so wrong to lie? If it doesn’t harm anyone, why can’t you?
February 5, 2012 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #850000HealthParticipantcinderella -“I get that Health, but why is it considered so wrong to lie? If it doesn’t harm anyone, why can’t you?”
Obviously you don’t get what I’m saying. Let’s say a friend asks you what your living room has in it? And you answer a beautiful leather couch. Now this didn’t harm your friend, but you manipulated her. I just posted what is wrong with manipulating others!
But you are allowed to lie for Sholom.
February 5, 2012 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #850001ZeesKiteParticipantI think to lie is to move away from HaShem. The seal of HaKodosh Boruch Hu is emes. The absolute truth. Any step towards falsehood his moving away from HaShem. That’s why it is the only aveira that says ???? – distance yourself from it.
We learned in Tanach about the spirit of Navos, who suggested to HaShem that he become a ??? ??? – a consciousness of falsehood in the mouths of the prophets. HaShem told him ??, go out, (get out of here) out of the ????? of the proximity of HaShem’s presence. It was an important job, however it cannot be in the ?????, closeness of HaShem.
(Any local CR Rabbi or Talmudician would be better equipped to answer..)
February 5, 2012 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #850002NechomahParticipantYou may not be hurting SOMEONE ELSE by telling a lie, but you are hurting YOURSELF. It perverts part of your being by telling something that is not the truth. Your YH is activated to convince you that it is really OK, because you’re not hurting anyone by what you are saying, but in truth, you have just strengthened the YH with what you said. It will be harder to say the truth the next time.
February 6, 2012 3:12 pm at 3:12 pm #850003Raphael KaufmanMemberThere are two kinds of lies. Lies that benefit the liar, either materially or psychically, and lies that benefit the hearer. The later may be permitted to, for instance, spare someone’s feelings or to prevent sinnah, as in the case of HKBH Himself modifying the words of Sarah Immeinu, or to save a life.
Question: Is a doctor allowed to tell someone straight out that they have been diagnosed with cancer and have a short time to live? Would you want to know if there was no reasonable hope?

This is one of the ethical questions that practioners deal with -there is no -yes or no answer. It depends on the situation. Some people should be told and others shouldn’t.
February 7, 2012 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #850005computer777ParticipantTruth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stranger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion- and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion… while Truth again reverts to a new minority.
February 7, 2012 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #850006Raphael KaufmanMemberHealth, what I meant to indicate was that it may be mutar for a doctor to lie to a patient to prevent anxiety. I recall reading that there was some halachic controversy over whether or not a doctor (we assume a frum doctor) is even ALLOWED to tell a patient straight out that he/she has little or no hope of recovery.
February 7, 2012 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #850007HealthParticipantRK -Like I said -it depends on the situation. There are Rabbonim (not all) who know Halachos of Refuah very well. These Shailos should be presented to them.
February 8, 2012 3:33 am at 3:33 am #850008☕️coffee addictParticipantCindy, (can I call u that?)
If it was permitted to lie then no one would trust anyone else, one of the main points of life is trust
February 8, 2012 5:20 am at 5:20 am #850009🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantCA – great point
