Answer: Some mens talleisim in the shuls I frequent…!!
A ???? is a ??? ?? ????, a ??? ???????. Cant you take it for cleaning once in a while? It grosses me out!
Who else feels the same?
January 25, 2012 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #865516popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy would you want to wash out the sweat and tears that you expended in tefilla?
January 25, 2012 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #865517YW Moderator-20ModeratorShticky, the cleaners can’t make a Tallis white again. They can only wash stains out.
So what may look to you as a dirty Tallis, can actually be fresh from the cleaners.
But I gross out from yellow Talleisim too! I guess people can’t afford to spend $250 annually on a new one.
January 25, 2012 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #865518ED IT ORParticipantyou don’t need the cleaner, just throw it in the washing machine with whitener
January 25, 2012 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #865519yahudMemberyeah, lets all spend $250 so that dear mod 20 wont get grossed out

January 25, 2012 6:33 pm at 6:33 pm #865521Shticky GuyParticipantPopa: the tears one expends in tefilla do not need washing out. Hashem collects them. But pungent sweat is a different story. And I’m not talking washing daily, weekly or even monthly. Even twice a year makes a real difference. Say just before Pesach then right after Simchas Torah should be the minimum for any uneccentric, mildly decent person…
Mod 20: Cleaners cannot make a yellow tallis white again but the cleaning does preserve the whiteness of a still-white tallis! BTW you dont have to spend $250 for a new tallis. And annual purchases are not necessary. Once in a few years in fine.

January 25, 2012 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #865523apushatayidParticipantWool is naturally yellow. The more you wash your tallis, the yellower it will get as you wash out all the dyes.
January 25, 2012 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #865524Rav TuvParticipantShticky-
Maybe you should concentrate more on your davening and less on other men’s talleisim. Just saying.
January 25, 2012 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm #865525twistedParticipantMy shabbos talis is a 30-ish year old Munkaczer Turkish, and very yellow, but I would not give it up for any white new thing. It was woven on the oily clacking looms when they were still on Division St. in Manhattan. It is is piece of history. It also has some small bloodstains from a Rosh Hashonah bris from way back. ( I lent it to the mohel who was somewhat sloppy). That child today is a talmid chochom charif.
January 25, 2012 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #865527R.T.ParticipantThere might be an inyan I believe to have Tallaism cleaned or washed for Rosh HaShanna and for Pesach.
Tallaism, in my humble opinion shouldn’t be worn for Kiddush after davening on Shabbos/Yom Tov, only for Tefilla.
Tallaism should be worn for Mincha (but that’s another thread altogether — no pun intended).
Shticky Guy — Tallaism are not D’Var Sheb’Kedusha. They are D’Var Shel Mitzvah. Tefillin are D’Var Sheb’Kedusha.
Some have the practice to buy a new Tallis at a lifecycle event — Bris Mila, Chassuna of a child, birth of a grandchild.
Twisted — very interesting. On a related topic, it is know that the late Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, ZTVK”L would wear the same kittel on Yom Kippur as the one he wore on Pesach Seder night. The Kiddush/Matzah/Charoset stains would “act as a defense attorney in front of the Heavenly Court” of his involvement in Mitzvohs here below.

Hmmm… “black and white and yellow all over”?
My guess was going to be a pseudo-chareidi in Beit Shemesh!
Black and white because of their clothing, of course.
Yellow, because they are so ‘brave’ attacking little girls and solitary women.
Someday (probably soon) they will attack a girl or woman who, though they didn’t realize it, has her brother/s or husband or boyfriend or father nearby. Then they will find out what it feels like to have teeth extracted without any novacaine!!!
Then THEY will WISH the “nazi” police were nearby to save them, but the only sirens they will hear will be those of the ambulances taking them to the hospital.

I change my underwear even if they get sweaty during tefilla. I don’t give it a second thought, no matter how holy they are.

Thirty years ago, the Munkaczer talis shop was on 13 Ave. and 38th Street, the weaving was done in the back room. I also miss them. My Munkaczer talis is 40 years old and still strong as ever. It’s yellowish but always clean and pressed because I love that talis.
