has anyone found a good method of doing chazarah that’s both doable (not too intense) and effective
There are various effective methods. If you want to see a website dedicated to chazara (they have programs for basically any sefer go there and you will really enjoy) try googling “dafyomireview” and it should bring up their website.
The gemara in Eruvin(54b) discusses chazrah and its importance. The gemara mentions that chazarah was done 4 times by Moshe Rabbeinu,and then goes on to explain the importance of mnemonics to remember each suyga easily. So 4 times might be a start.

Make sure you use a blech.

chazarah comes from the root of “chazer”– “pig”.
If you want to chazer correctly, you need to do it like a pig, and grab every moment you can.
According to some studies chazara works best when you pig out on food while doing it.

Seriously, the Dirshu method is very effective. I may have the details wrong, but it goes something like this:
Every day, learn a particular amount, after chazering the limud from the previous day.
Chazer everything from the week on Shabbos.
Chazer all of that once a month.
This is short term, aside from any project to constantly chazer all previous limudim.
I would recommend the Kerem Yehoshoua (an English sefer; I forget the author… his name is probably Yehoshuoa). I used it a few times, and thought it was fantastic. He gives a study plan (which I no longer use) and a methodology for chazara (which I still try to use). Both are great

When you complete a Sugya, it is a good idea to do what the Tana’im did. You find many Mishnayos and Braysos that give you a number of times that you would be Chayav or Patur.
It is important when you chazer to learn something new in the material each time- not to just chew the exact same thing all over again. Like a chazer that doesn’t chew its cud.

if you look at any page of Gemorah you will notice there are 4 lines of Rashi, and 4 lines of Tosfos above the Gemorah. some think that is a remez to chazarah 4 times
this is a little tangential, but does apply to chazarah.
i just heard a few minutes ago on a tape from Rabbi Avigdor Miller, tz’l,
that when learning Gemorah it is advisable to have in mind that you are going to have to say over the sugya, or the Tosfos or whatever, to someone later that day, like youre going to give a Shiur to young Bochrim. then say it over to yourself without looking in the Gemorrah.
I’ve noticed that a great time to Chazzer is when it is not fresh in your mind anymore, but before it is completely gone. This way you get to have a fresh look at the Sugya while reaping the rewards of what you put in last time.
When doing it this way you see clearly everything that was confusing before. This is what Chazal mean by Halomed V’eino Chozer Kizorei’a V’eino Kotzer — One who learns and does not Chazzer is as one who plants but does not return to cut his stalks.
The proper way to chazer, is to get down and dirty in the material. Like chazers do. You can’t just read quickly through it and rely on how you understood it last time; you need to get into it again.

take a position where people ask you questions. after getting stumped once or twice you’ll find yourself VERY motivated to chazer.
Popa: There was this daf yomi maggid shiur in Monsey about two years ago found selling… Anyways, when getting ready to run off, his shiur asked him what to do. His reply “Chazer, Chazer, Chazer”

I learned that chazarah is something very different: it should be short. R’ Moshe Feinstein told the boys – and practised it himself – that one should not relearn the daf, rather read through it without concentrating too much. He said six minutes a daf. Only Chazer the gemarah, not rashi or tosfos (although naturally you will be learning the sugya with their perush) because you will get bogged down. Chazzar while the subject is fresh (as the gemarah says, Atiki kasha machaedta). Chazzar three blatt a day.
Chazzarah is a flow. It is enjoyable to relax and let the familiar words of the gemarah flow past. Most people who claim that chazarah is hard and that they have no taam in it are simply doing it wrong.

Reasonable. I think I did a pretty good job on something in real life today also, but I won’t know exactly about that until I see the outcome.
I also made pizza today in my cast iron skillet, using the dough I’ve been regaling you about. I think I may have eaten it a bit raw though.

lebidik yankel, The approach you bring down will help one to see the forest. With normal learning one can be so focused on the details that he cannot see the big picture.
