Is it forbidden in the weather section of a paper; to publish pictures of the Sun and the Moon?
According to the “Flatbush Journal” it is now Assur…They are going to start to only publish “partial drawings”…
It is Assur to make a replica of the sun or moon. There are many Machloksim involved as to what exactly is Assur (2D vs. 3D, whether it has to look like it or just be representative, and more), but as far as I know everyone agrees that if it’s partial then it’s okay. That’s why there was actually a genre of Frum photography where people would take pictures of the sunset but wait until just a bit of it had dropped below the horizon. Ask you LOR for what you hold, but this is far from a ridiculous Chumra and has serious Halachic backing (and may even be a majority opinion, I’m not familiar enough with the issue to know for sure).
Rabban Gamliel had white images on his wall with which he would interview ignorant witnesses. (Mishna RH). For many years, the fancier mahadura of Nach would have a famous woodcut of Elozor Hakohen, and Yehoshua gesturing to the sun ( to stop at Givon)

I thought it was only the Moon. Why the Sun?
They are celestial objects, not deities. What is the issue?

There’s a lot of talk, I cannot do it justice. If you have a Shulchan Aruch it’s mainly in Yoreh Deah 141:4. The general idea it is forbidden to create an image of anything in the celestial sphere, even if it’s just a picture.
Lesschumras: the gemara in avodah zara(43) explains that there is a chashad of having these images,and people do/did worship these things.
The FJJ editor was alerted by a reader that it might be assur based on what the reader heard from Rabbi Yisroel Reissman. To his credit, the editor asked the shaila to Rabbi Reissman and based on his psak will no longer produce the full image.
if its assur to print a picture of the sun or moon, it must certainly be assur to print a picture of a person-will be considered a avoda zara. can someone explain the problem? Is a picture really considered a Tzelem???

koillel101: That is why there are many gedoilom who did not allow themselves to be photographed or drawn. They DID consider it a problem!
Also, many or makpid to damage any dolls their kids might have (cut off an ear, or the nose) so that it shouldn’t be a tzelem.
Heimishe mom: That is the shitta of Rav Eliashiv(cutting somthing from the dolls face).
I don’t want to make light of this is but if you read that some religion did this you’d have right to poke fun at it. Celestial bodies, dolls and pictures are not objects of worshp and treating them as such doesn’t make any sense and is hard to justify and sounds like superstition.

The sun is not a deity. How is it covered by the pasuk?

When we were kids we would color the sun green in our coloring books to avoid a faithful representation of the sun. This was something our parents suggested.
