    Are they going to be accused of being Mechalel Shabbos?

    Not if they keep Shabbos seven days after the previous Shabbos, regardless of what the day is called.

    I was thinking, its more like which day Rosh Chodesh is declared. The “day of the week” is unchanged; its only the “date” that is getting moved.

    That’s if they followed the teachings of Chazal. If they just skipped a day, then they are stam nuts.

    There really aren’t any Chabad houses there? I was so sure there was at least one. Are there any Jews there at all?

    You know, if you think about it, it’s a good thing that when Pope Gregory skipped 10 days in 1582* to correct deficiencies in the Julian calendar, that he only skipped the calendar dates and not the actual days of the week. Otherwise, we’d be celebrating Shabbos in the middle of the work week. 🙂

    * Thursday, Oct 4, 1582 was followed by Friday, October 15, 1582.

    When the world changed from the Jullian Calander to the Gregorian Calender, 11 days were skipped

    In most of Western Europe The Day After March 10,1582 was March 21, 1582

    In England the and US Colonies September 2, 1752 was followed by Sepetember 14, 1752

    And in Russia Janauary 31, 1918 was Followed by February 14, 1918

    zahavasdad- That may be due to the machlokes between R’ Tikuchinsky and the Chazon Ish on the International Date Line.

    Wolf: If the story I heard was correct, they wanted to add an “Earth Day” between a Saturday and a Sunday one day in the 70s and one of the main reasons they didn’t was that it would make Shabbos on Friday from then on.

    Also, imagine how tough it was for Jews under the French Revolution during the few years that they actually tried to make the 10-day week stick.
