So I’m at a wedding tonight and my 2 worst nightmares came true:
1)As I’m walking in, I pass a dessert table and some lady bumps into me holding a pastry with cream and confectioners sugar. And it goes all over my dress. My brand new (I’m embarrassed to say how much it cost) dress.
2)I’m dancing and I by mistake back into a photographer. My stupid heel catches onto his stepladder and I twisted my ankle like 360 degrees. Ouch 🙁
Otherwise though, I totally enjoyed the wedding.

While I agree that both of the events are unpleasant experiences, are they really the *worst* things you can imagine happening at a wedding?
May those unpleasant experiences be the worst you ever suffer.
The Wolf
(Yes, I meant that bracha sincerely)
December 29, 2011 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #840469mommamia22ParticipantI was once at the kosel and a bird pooped all over my brand new white Shabbos jacket. I was told it’s a good sign.
Who knows? Maybe getting “creamed” was your “good sign”!
December 29, 2011 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm #840470TheGoqParticipantJust as long as you were home by midnight.
December 29, 2011 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #840471Aishes ChayilParticipantI was at a wedding once where the father of the Kalla collpased at the Mitzvah Tantz and died of a heart attack on the spot!
Felling better Cinderella???;)))

I’m confused. Did this really happen or are you just making a point?
And if it really happened, then why the smiley face at the end? That’s horrible — and I can’t imagine that someone else’s greater tragedy should make her (relatively minor) misfortune seem any better.

December 29, 2011 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #840473Aishes ChayilParticipantWolfish;
Yes it happened, AND I am making a point.
The smile was not meant to be malicious but rather sarcastic.
You say;
‘and I can’t imagine that someone else’s greater tragedy should make her (relatively minor) misfortune seem any better.
Well I diasagree with you on that one. One always must be grateful for not having to endure painful experiences. As I do understand Cinderella’s unpleasant happenings, they might have been uncomfortable, but not tragic.
As you say,may those unpleasant experiences be her worst suffering!
December 29, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #840474goldenkintMemberkol hakavod to you for staying with your soiled dress and dancing and being mesameach the kallah, which is really what its all about. i hope your ankle heals and the dress survives a cleaning.
may all of your upsets be solvable with soap and water, or cleaning fluid.
December 30, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #840475Adam885710ParticipantMy friend was at a wedding and while he was dancing he vomited all over the dance floor (it wasn’t because he was drunk). The whole area smelled and dancing stopped for around 5 minutes while the waiters had to clean everything up. Now that is what I call embarrassing!
December 30, 2011 5:50 am at 5:50 am #840477aries2756ParticipantLife is full of embarrassing moments. May we learn to laugh them away and wake up to face a brand new day!
December 30, 2011 9:50 am at 9:50 am #840478jmj613Participantaries thats a great line!!! and so true
December 30, 2011 10:52 am at 10:52 am #840479Lechayim120MemberCinderella, let the incident with the dessert be a kaporah. The incident with ankle is as well, but I have heard of stories where people have had things happen to their ankle and it is tough to heal. I really hope she is okay and hers is totally healed.
December 30, 2011 12:50 pm at 12:50 pm #840480seeallsidesParticipantgive her some slack – she doesn’t mean horrible as in tragic, she means it was horrible as in two unpleasant incidents. When somebody says ugh that coffee was awful, it ruined my day – it is just a manner of speaking. Sorry about your dress and your ankle, i hope they clean and heal well.
December 30, 2011 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #840481Feif UnParticipantAt my bar mitzvah my classmates picked me up in a chair. Something had spilled on the floor, and someone slipped. The chair fell, and me along with it. When I fell, I badly sprained my ankle. That was it for my dancing at my own bar mitzvah. I spent the rest of it sitting in a chair while they danced in a circle around me.
December 30, 2011 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #840482oomisParticipantI was at a wedding once where the father of the Kalla collpased at the Mitzvah Tantz and died of a heart attack on the spot!”
This happened to a former neighbor of mine. Her father was niftar suddenly right after the chuppah. It unfortunately does happen R”L, and there are worse things, like the bride and groom who were killed in a car crash driving to their reception (held in a different place from the ceremony).
Worse yet was the Kallah in E”Y who was killed by a homicide bomber the day before her wedding was to take place (was her name Nava Appelbaum O”H?)as she sat with her father at a cafe having some quality father-daughter time.
Kind of puts the messed up dress issue in perspective. Sorry you injured your ankle, though. My husband did that at our son’s wedding. Refuah shelaima.
December 30, 2011 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #840483Sam2ParticipantI honestly hate it when people try and put down a story/make you feel better by pointing out worse things that have happened. All it does is make me feel guilty over being upset over my current situation. “How can you be sad about X when there are starving kids out there?” It doesn’t do anything. Cinderella had an experience that was embarrassing and possibly traumatic to her. We shouldn’t minimize that by pointing out that others have had it worse. Everyone has their own problems. Cinderella, I feel bad for what happened to you and honestly hope that nothing this upsetting (or worse, obviously) happens to you ever again.
December 30, 2011 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm #840484WolfishMusingsParticipantThank you, Sam2. That’s pretty much the sentiment I was trying to express, but you did it with much more eloquence.

December 30, 2011 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #840485yungerman1ParticipantSam2 and Da Wolf- While I understand your point of view and at times it could be really annoying, the other side of the coin is saying to put things in perspective.
Look at the bright side of things and when compared to other tragedies that B”H didnt happen to you, you wont get as upset.
If after spilling coffee on your shirt someone tells you that yesterday their shirt got caught on a nail and was ruined, you will likely say “BH that didnt happen to me and at least I can cover the stain with a tie/jacket etc…instead of dwelling on the coffee stain.
December 30, 2011 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #840486day by dayMemberFor example ….When I was sitting shiva for my father, a lady walked in took one look at me and announced “you think your father suffered? My father suffered so MUCH more”
That wasn’t very helpful.
December 30, 2011 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #840487WolfishMusingsParticipantthe other side of the coin is saying to put things in perspective.
That’s exactly what I tried to do above *without* bringing other people’s tragedies into the picture.

December 30, 2011 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #840488cinderellaParticipantTwo very annoying things happened to me at the wedding and believe me I am very aware that it could have have been worse. But I was telling you my story and that’s what happened to me. Why are you trying to top it? To make me feel better?
So thanks Wolf and Sam2 and day by day for sticking up for me. Seriously people, you make big deals out of nothing.
seeallsides, I actually have always had an ankle problem. I used to play basketball a lot in school and camp and I once snapped a tendon somewhere around there and it never healed properly. So my ankle still really hurts. I guess I have to put my heels away for a while 🙁
December 30, 2011 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #840489smartcookieMemberI took this as Cinderella is trying to Post something humorous, although it wasn’t funny while happening.
She wasn’t trying to recount a tragic life episode. Lighten up people and thanks for the laugh.
December 30, 2011 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm #840490cinderellaParticipantI wasn’t really trying to be funny but I’m glad I made you laugh 🙂

January 1, 2012 3:19 am at 3:19 am #840494hudiParticipantSam2 – I agree
I hope you’re ok now cinderella 🙂

May you have many Simchos to dance at to make up for it.
cinderella, I agree with Sam2, but I don’t think anyone meant anything. And I say to put away the heels anyway, they’re uncomfortable.

agreed!
January 1, 2012 10:38 am at 10:38 am #840497goldenkintMembercinderella. i used to twist my ankle all the time while wearing heels and platforms. Baruch hashem its better now, but no more high heels for me ,alas. the lasting damage is an inabilty to turn my ankle in to the classic yoga seated position. again alas. i’ve gotten over it. feel good.
January 1, 2012 10:43 am at 10:43 am #840498goldenkintMemberbtw, i’m kind of disappointed that many people missed the positive note that you end with, cinderella. that despite the aggravating incidents you really enjoyed the wedding.
its a lesson for everyone. a lot of annoying things happen to us, but we can still enjoy life,if we have a good atttitude.
January 1, 2012 11:46 am at 11:46 am #840499Aishes ChayilParticipantCinderella, Sam2 and the others,
No one is trying to demean these akward experiences and I fully understand how uncomfortable these situations can be.
However to label them as your ‘2 worst nightmares’????
Dont you think thats overstating it?
January 1, 2012 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #840500vadimParticipantI was at a Bar Mitzva where the boy threw up all over the ST during laining. THAT was insane.
January 1, 2012 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm #840501oomisParticipantSam, while you are right about it not helping to make someone feel better by pointing out worse things that happen, the thread is called wedding HORROR stories. Getting a dress soiled and spraining an ankle are awful, to be sure, but not horrifying incidents at a wedding. Things happen like that all the time, we learn to laugh, get over it (as I am sure Cinderella did), and hope the next time is better. There is little recovery however, from the truly horrifying things that can happen, as was pointed out. May that soiled dress and bad ankle be mamesh the worst thing that Cinderella experiences in life.
January 1, 2012 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #840502cinderellaParticipantSeriously people?
But yes, those are 2 things I am always nervous about when I go to weddings. My heels (I have a history of ankle problems) and my dress (who wants to ruin their outfit?).
So to me, when I came home from the wedding and started this thread, I was feeling pretty horrible, hence the ‘Horror’ part. I didn’t say the ‘Most Horrific’. But I can agree how they aren’t my 2 worst nightmares.
January 1, 2012 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #840503OneOfManyParticipantThe “worst nightmares” and “horror story” are probably just humorous exaggeration on cinderella’s part…she clearly didn’t perceive it quite as such.
January 1, 2012 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #840504🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantMy kids know that after what I have been through in life we don’t say, “I’m dying”, “I’m gonna kill him”, “I’m starving”. I have tried to teach them that taking a more accurate perspective of what is really going on helps prevent a lot of kvetching, negativity and anger. I also know it’s “my own thing” so I try not to call others out on it.
Cinderella, I am also super impressed that even though it was very upsetting to you, you could keep it from standing in the way of your mitzvah! Good for you!
