Please help!
December 28, 2011 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #838928ToiParticipantif hes 18 and he thinks he needs a bors, he probably needs it. itll run you a pretty penny. in the US theyre about 180-230, but here theyll run you around a thousand shek. sorry

Do you want to buy him the hat?
If yes, buy it.
If no, tell him he is more than welcome to buy himself the hat.
December 28, 2011 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #838930TheGoqParticipantIf he is a vegan make sure there are no feathers in the hat.
December 28, 2011 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #838931commonsenseParticipantwhy dafka a bors? There are many nice cheaper hats available.

December 28, 2011 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #838934oomisParticipantIMO no one should buy a Borsalino, davka because of its price. There are plenty of black hats around. It is no different from condemning some women for only wanting to wear designer clothing (and don’t say it is different, because it is part of the “levush” as there is absolutely no justification for levush that includes such an outrageously priced head covering, as being de regeur, when there are way less expensive hats that make a yeshivah bochur look equally yeshivish).
December 28, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #838935AinOhdMilvadoParticipantYou can get a very decent hat that is not a Borsalino for at least a third cheaper.
It is a combination of the maturity of the kid, the wealth of the parent, and what message you want to teach your son that will determine what to buy.
December 28, 2011 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm #838936yitayningwutParticipantLOL Goq, what about the hat itself?
December 28, 2011 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #838937ToiParticipantcommon- its readily noticeable to any yeshivaman if its not a bors, and truthfully their hats are a cut above the rest.
December 28, 2011 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #838938BowwowParticipantAgree to the Borsallino if he agrees to get a grey one!
December 28, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #838939real-briskerMemberoomis – Borsalino is mot about the name. Its about the quality thats uncompareable.
December 28, 2011 9:09 pm at 9:09 pm #838940ED IT ORParticipanta borsalino will work out far cheaper in the long run, (it lasts longer and being the hat he wanted he will look after it far more carefully!)
also if at 18 it is his first hat you should definitely let him choose it
December 28, 2011 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #838941Rav TuvParticipantI prefer a blue one with a red “C” on the front.
December 28, 2011 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #838942ny100kParticipantHe feels he needs a Borsalino, because that is what his friends make him feel. In reality, I am sure many of his friends don’t have a Borsalino. If making him fit in is important, then it makes sense to splurge on the Borsalino. The extra 100$ will go a long way to boost his confidence.

Thank you all so much for your advice and kind observations, it is all new to me!
Out of all my kids this is the first to ask for a hat, I have older boys who are MO, various girls who are married to different types of boys, from yeshivish to mizrachi dati, and my little one who is keen and proud to be what here in the uk we call a ” black hat”. As long as he learns and works hard I feel he deserves a hat!
Amazed at the high price, but that is obviously my ignorance. I will try my negotiating skills with my son and discuss maybe sharing the cost if it is to be a borsalino, otherwise perhaps he can compromise on a nice smart hat from a different place.
Appreciate your help!

Do you condemn women who spend $100 more on a better quality, or even a better looking outfit than the cheapest one available?

December 28, 2011 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #838947Sam2ParticipantI have heard that the reason Borsalinos are so expensive is because part of their proceeds go to missionary work. Can anyone deny or confirm this?

I heard that the reason Coca Cola is so expensive, is because they give part of their proceeds to Hamas. Can anyone deny or confirm this?

Daas yochid, you are right in noting the value of good quality and crafstmanship, I am working on my negotiating skills right now.
December 28, 2011 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm #838950☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSam2,
I don’t know if that’s true or not, but normally, prices are determined by market forces. They’ll charge as much as they can get, no matter where the profits go.
