    We all know that the yeshiva world is the best Jewish news site, and the CR is the best Jewish discussion forum out there. However, there comes a time when one needs a withdrawal to focus on life.

    So that’s where the following batch file comes in:

    This batch file edits your HOSTS file (an old relic of the pre-dns days) to block access to the Yeshiva World, which, by extension, blocks access to the CR. When you are ready to wade in again,

    1. Navigate to c:windowssystem32driversetc

    2.delete HOSTS

    3. Rename HOSTS.BAK to HOSTS

    4. Reboot.

    I am not writing a batch file for the second step on purpose.

    While Hashem is the Adon Tzeva-os, this batch file is the lord of the HOSTS file.

    sounds like a good line from a movie, lol! i don’t post too often, but i am addicted to the coffee room. maybe this will come in handy one day.

    Ok, I relent. Here’s the cure for the cure:

    So now you can block it when you need to prevent it from interfering with rl, but you can easily unblock it too. Now there is no excuse.

    I use my HOST file for all my local sites. Why would you call it a relic? Anyhow, it wouldn’t help for me. I would go to dnsquery and get Yeshiva World’s IP and use that. But you can use a proxy and have it block the CR while letting the news page.

    Haleivi, The HOSTS file is mainly used by malware to ensure access to their sites and blocked access to good sites. I have seen HOSTS used when using an ssl-vpn when you can access private ip’s but not the local dns server, but otherwise, it’s mostly for malware. Why would you use HOSTS instead of a small server running a dns daemon?

    Of course you can undo the changes made. The point is that when you robotically click the link, it’s blocked, and you have a chance to stop yourself. If you try you can get around most filters too. The idea is you have a chance to rethink your decision.

    BTW I tested the ip using a dnsquery once I blocked it, and it didn’t work. Also, most CR links refer to http://www.theyeshivaworld.com and would not work once blocked.

    I would like to further add that:

    1. the average person here has no clue what a HOSTS file is or where it’s located

    2. Most people who have any home network rely on netbios broadcasts to find other computers, or use the wizards to find them.

    So yeah, hosts file is mostly obsolete except for this case and malware (and a few speciailized cases kana”l)

    3. The average person would not know how to do a dns query

    4. The average person wouldn’t be interested in changing every link to x.x.x.x.x/coffeeroom/topic/whatever-topic- thus this works.

    How to fight CR addiction

    It needs just willpower. I’ve fought CR addiction for two weeks now – I have not been here at all for two weeks (has anyone noticed) besides to say happy cranniversary to goq. I’ll come back when I no longer get cravings. And I can feel that coming soon so maybe I’ll be back this or next week. Looking forward!

    Yes, strong willpower is great. But if everyone had it, lap band and nicotine patches wouldn’t be such booming businesses.

    Do you mean that your lookup software returned your own IP? I was talking about getting the IP from a website that does that service.

    I have a website on my own computer without any network, and I want to use something fancier than ‘localhost’. Also, I have multiple sites running. Using the HOSTS file is definitely the best and easiest way.

    I never heard that about malware using it. I guess another benefit of using it myself, is to get to check who else is lurking about. What I did see once was the proxy of the browser set to local IP with some funny port. A friend of mine, after running anti-malware, couldn’t browse anymore. After looking through the settings, I noticed that proxy, a vestige of the virus (I hope).

    I meant using a dns query website (also something that most users have no clue about), punched the numbers in, and it didn’t work.

    If you have multiple hosts running on a home network, and are not relying on netbios braodcasts (A VERY uncommon setup), that means you would need to edit the hosts file on every machine. Why not just run a bind server somewhere?
