I am thinking of taking the N.Y.P.D test to become a police officer. Any frum police officers or anyone in the process. I was told its a really long waiting list. Do they respect Shabbos and let you take off? Any info would really be helpful. Do they take credits from B.M.G or any other Yeshiva?
I know of a few. (and there is a long list, from what I understand) It is not simple, ask YLOR

I once read an article on a frum law enforcement officer working for the sheriffs department in Rockaway, NY. Other than that, I only know of frum people in the military who are able to keep kosher and observe Shabbos, Succos, Pesach..etc.
Also, there are many jobs within the NYPD held by officers, such as accountants, computers, statistics, programs and policies, etc.

A former student of my yeshiva who became a cop stopped by on Purim. I asked to see his badge, and he showed me his badge. I told him, “Remind me not to hang around YOU tonight!”
I was drunk and I thought it was funny…
Yes I know one very well. He didn’t work on Shabbos but had to work Sundays instead. Good Luck!
There are a few. It can’t be an easy profession, but with the right attitude and department you can do a lot of good for the community.

I know one personally (relative of a relative; met once or twice/frum) another I know of through a friend. I would imagine since there are frum cops it’s possible to be shomer Shabbos. I wouldn’t let a long list deter you if it’s what you want. I was told while in college the profession of my choice was flooded. Guess what? Years later it still is and girls are still going into these professions AND getting jobs.
I know someone who has been with the NYPD since the early 80’s.
I know two.
One of them was in yeshiva with me for many years before joining NYPD.
I think they have a frum chaplain also, you should contact him.
A very good friend of mine is the highest ranked frum office in the NYPD; an Inspector, which is just below the various levels of Chief.
Call the assistant to the Police Commisioner who is frum. He will advise you.

there is also a fraternal society within the NYPD of Jewish officers called the Shomrim. It was founded in 1924.
The goal of the society “so that Law Enforcement Officers of the Jewish faith may join together for the Welfare of all.”
Most famously Capt. Max Finkelstein was appointed by Fiorello Laguardia in 1938 to oversee the security of visiting Nazi/German officials and to guard the German Embassy, Consulate, and to keep an eye on other suspected Nazi sympathizers. The entire NYPD security staff for the German Consulate was Jewish. This is what happens when you have a good Jewish Mayor like Fiorello Laguardia.

LaGuardia’s fine attention to the police detail was probably inspired by a decision by Theodore Roosevelt, when he was NY Police Commissioner to guard an unwelcome antisemitic preacher with 40 Jewish police officers.

ive got 2 cousins in it. they love it. one of them did expirience some anti semitisim and the other one is in the 66th pcnt. and loves it cuz it’s close to home, and helps protect borough park, so he likes it.
agav, before you become a polic officer, make sure you yourself abide to all the laws… i don’t like hypocrites.
I also thought the Shomrim were a group of Orthodox Jewish cops.

I think it’s very important to have some frum police officers.
Just make sure that you’re not assigned to patrol (in terms of traffic stops and parking tickets) any frum neighborhoods…
Gregaaron, Reb Moshe ZT”L paskened that a frum Jew can work as an auditor. As for traffic tickets, the traffic laws are there for a reason. Blocking hydrants and running reds can kill people. A Jewish cop is perfectly allowed to write tickets.
Really? How many people do you know who have been killed for parking twelve feet from a hydrant? Or because of alternate side parking, or going 8 MPH above the speed limit?
I have a friend that’s a frum NYPD cop. They fully accommodated all of his religious needs, including his facial hair. They accepted his college credits from a heimishe mossad, so I’m sure they’ll accept BMG credits. Note, however, that they may not accept all of the BMG “classes,” So make sure you’ve got a bit over the sixty credits necessary when applying.

The ideal police force is one that has representatives of every group in the city. Then it is more like a citizens’ police force than a military enforcement unit.

Gregaaron, regarding the hydrant, if c”v there is a fire there is clear danger to life from the parked car. Alternate side regulations are for the purpose of facillitating streetcleaning so violators might be considered to be damaging the public. Regarding the rest, they are in the category of rodef. Moreover, from the Gemara (Baba Metzia 83b-84a) we see that while it is inappropriate for a talmid chacham an ordinary Jew may become a police detective and certainly one who apprehends criminals in the act or who have already been discovered (see Bet Yosef, citing the Responsum of the Rashba, Hoshen Mishpat 388).

I once heard that speeding might be assur since it violates dina d’malchusa (besides the sakana aspect of course).
