My 13 year-old son wants a kindle. I dont want to get it for him, since it has wifi and web browsing. Does anyone know of an e-reader that has to be connected to a computer, so that he cant download anything or surf internet without supervision? Thanks in advance….

I’m really jealous of your son! My parents would never buy anything for me – I had to pay for everything myself.

Why don’t you make him pay for it, and see if its still so necessary?

it’s not a question of being able to pay for it. he’s done plenty of babysitting for us, and has earned it. I’m more worried about the unsupervised internet. and the cheaper kindles seem to come with advertisements, which I certainly wouldn’t be able to control. I’d be willing to pay more to not have the ads, but i don’t see where it says that wifi is only for bookreading.

E-Ink displays generally aren’t suitable for browsing, although I can’t assure you that none of them have browsers.

I did some follow up and found that there are many readers with E-Ink that do have browsers. Do a Wikipedia search for “Comparison of e-book readers” for a detailed list of readers.
