Late one night I was in the city looking for parking (I was circling for a while). Finally I saw a car which I thought was pulling out, so I pulled along side it. The driver (a non-jew) rolls down their window and asks If I am waiting for something, so I asked are you pulling out. So she replies; No, but hold this spot, and I will try to see if I can fit in that smaller spot across the street (which I couldn’t). Limaysa she wasn’t able to fit. ss as we made up I started to pull out to let her back in. She pulls up alongside me and says “Don’t Worry about it, Keep the Spot, I have a smaller car than you, I’ll go find one somewhere else. This left me in utter shock, and suprised. Would I (we) have done this, let alone for another Yid which there is a mitzvah of chesed to???
November 9, 2011 6:16 am at 6:16 am #824961✡onegoal™ParticipantWow! It is not very often that you will come across a goy that nice.
November 9, 2011 6:17 am at 6:17 am #824962real-briskerMemberonegoal – Yup. Its a lesson to learn from.
November 9, 2011 6:24 am at 6:24 am #824963MiddlePathParticipantWhat a nice act of kindness.
Y’know, it’s interesting, in the town where I went to high school, things like this happened so often that no one considered it shocking or surprising. That’s one benefit of a laid back small town. It’s very hard to find that in the big cities.
November 9, 2011 6:42 am at 6:42 am #824964aries2756ParticipantEzehu chacham? Sh’ lomeid m’kol adam!
November 9, 2011 9:02 am at 9:02 am #824965photogenicMemberMaybe she could be Jewish, but not observant. Hmmm…Either way that seems like someone who was bought up well.
November 9, 2011 11:23 am at 11:23 am #824966old manParticipant“Would I (we) have done this, let alone for another Yid which there is a mitzvah of chesed to??? “
I suggest that here lies part of the problem. Instead of intuitively realizing that we should be kind and considerate to all people, we start our lumdishe chakiros as to whom is it really a chiyuv to treat nicely?
There is no need to be embarrassed . Treat everyone with respect and consideration, Jewish or not.
November 9, 2011 11:59 am at 11:59 am #824967wanderingchanaParticipantThere are non-Jews who are “that nice” everywhere, who are also deserving of our chesed. Maybe not so much in NY, but that’s NY!
November 9, 2011 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #824968BTGuyParticipantA very nice thing happened to you. Dont be embarrased. Be happy you did something good to deserve that consideration.
I am glad you posted this. I want to try to do more chesed, myself, your post has inspired me to be more on the lookout for opportunities in the simplest places. Thank you.
November 9, 2011 1:56 pm at 1:56 pm #824969BaalHaboozeParticipantIMHO you have nothing to be embarrassed about. It was a beautiful act and it deserves praise no doubt. However, it shows a lot about YOU as well! That this incident got you thinking, you posted, and started to make a personal account (cheshbon Hanefesh) about your behaviour and actions. If you took something good out of this, ashrechah, and kudos for getting US to think about what our reaction would have been!
November 9, 2011 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #824970AstrixParticipantI would take it as a message from hashem like anything else in this world.
November 9, 2011 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #824971YatzmichMemberEmbarrased? No need for that. The type of person that would do that for you is probably the type of person that actually wants to do it for you.
Probably someone from the midwest, that’s my guess.
November 9, 2011 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #8249722scentsParticipantyou should be embarased ONLY if you wouldnt do it for someone else, be embarased and take it upon yourself to start acting better towards ANY other person.
I know that since you live in NY it might be a hard thing to do..
November 9, 2011 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #824973real-briskerMemberold man – I’m not sure what your talking about.
November 9, 2011 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #824974real-briskerMemberBT Guy, Baal Habooze – Thats why I posted this, I figured we can all learn a lesson from this.
November 9, 2011 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #824975old manParticipantOK, then please disregard what I wrote. No harm done.
November 9, 2011 5:49 pm at 5:49 pm #824976yid.periodMemberWhy must someone be Jewish to be a nice person? There are plenty of nice non-Jews; I don’t think that the fact she was non-Jewish should be the focus of surprise, but more the magnitude of the chessed committed in general.
November 9, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #824977real-briskerMemberold man – Efshar a hasbarah on where you see me making lomdisha chakiras?
November 9, 2011 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #824978seeallsidesParticipantSo i was all inspired and am standing on line in the store, and let person 1 go before me – i have a whole cart- she has three items, my pleasure – person2 after me – why don’t you go ahead too, 3 and 4 start giving me the ‘me too’ look and i say- okay – but that’s it – person from other aisle hears about the ‘no waiting’….what can i say – i let about eight people go before me and i must confess i got frustrated 🙁
November 9, 2011 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #824979am yisrael chaiParticipantBaalHabooze
+1
and your post shows something about YOU, as well!
November 9, 2011 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #824980real-briskerMemberyid.period – A non-jew has no mitzvah of chesed, no mitzvah of bein adom lichavero.
November 9, 2011 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #8249812scentsParticipantseeallsides.
you made me laugh, I know well what that is.
I have it all the time.
However look at it from the Person 4 perspective, what will 15 seconds do for you. since you did a large shopping, it means that you are in no rush.
sometimes i am that person just buying one small little thing. and there is this person who managed to get in front of me with this overloaded wagon. phew those grueling minutes..
November 9, 2011 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #824982cherrybimParticipantreal-brisker, where did you get that bologna from?
November 9, 2011 11:25 pm at 11:25 pm #824983real-briskerMembercherrybim – What bologana?
November 10, 2011 12:31 am at 12:31 am #824984HaLeiViParticipantseeallsides, the trick is not to feel Mechuyav. See MY THREAD about doing Chesed by choice and determination, not out of weekness.
I heard a story about a Tzaddik who was a big Baal Tzeddaka. One day he completely stopped giving Tzeddaka. It came to a point where there was a woman begging at his door until she began crying. After that he started giving again. He explained that he wanted to make sure that he wasn’t just giving to sattisfy his own Rachmanus.
