Coney Island’s Luna Park officially opened for business Saturday, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
Luna Park — named after the original hot spot until 1944 — is the first new amusement park in more than 50 years. (The first Luna Park opened in 1903 and closed in 1948).
The park sports 19 new rides, including roller coasters, a human slingshot, go-karts, and the world debut of “Air Race.”
The amusement park is seen as an investment for the city, which spent $96.5 million buying the land. City officials hope to revitalize the community — business owners are keeping their fingers crossed. Already, Luna Park has created 200 new jobs and another 150 jobs for next year.
Beach season also officially opens in Coney Island and across New York City Saturday.
There’s no entrance fee, so whether you prefer games or rides, feel free to take a stroll down the Boardwalk.
