So you know how you go to shul on sukkos, and everyone has a different way of keeping their aravos fresh?
This guy has an apple, this guy has an aluminum foil with wet paper towel, this guy has a garlic, this guy puts it in the fridge, this guy puts his esrog in the cholent, this guy has a special plastic aravos keeper, etc.
These methods are usually traditions, passed down in families, and they all work equally well. (ie. not at all.)
So I think they are basically a segula.
Well, my aravos look terrible. Much worse than usual. (They may have started off that way?) So I think my segula was no good.
Does anyone have a better segula for me? Do you think if I spell out “arava” with tehillim 119, it will help? What if I make challah 40 times with some arava in it?
Please help quick.
October 16, 2011 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #1101011bezalelParticipantWhat was your segula?
October 16, 2011 2:32 pm at 2:32 pm #11010122scentsParticipantThe best method of keeping the fresh, is to double wrap them with plastic. That’s what I did last year.
This year I followed the MG”A and bought new ones.

October 16, 2011 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1101014ItcheSrulikMemberThe best segula is to give lots of money to the ehrliche yidden selling aravos on chol hamoed. That’s what I do.

Yeah i heard about that lady. i think thats how sarah had yitzchok.
October 17, 2011 3:10 am at 3:10 am #1101018good.jewMemberToi, it is a good thing she did not give 20 sheq, or she would have had twins. And how would she have dealt with that?
October 17, 2011 3:28 am at 3:28 am #1101019real-briskerMemberHey popa this is one of my pet peeves. People spend literally HUNDEREDS of dollars on a “beautiful” esrog, but that is it they know.
Why when chol hamoed comes around and the aravos are black, speckled, dried out, crunching away… cant they afford the extra buck and buy fresh and healthy ones????? argh!!!!
October 17, 2011 4:30 am at 4:30 am #1101020YW Moderator-42ModeratorThe best segula is to take them out and whack them against the chazan who is taking too long for Hallel… then buy new ones

October 17, 2011 5:15 am at 5:15 am #1101022BSDMemberKeep them in a flower pot until they take root, and shake it while attached.
Or…
Every day, shake it in the air in 6 different directions (preferably with the other minim). This is guaranteed to work for at least 1 day (Did you ever see black aravos on day 1?)
I have seen many peaople do this, and that, my friend, is testimony to its efficacy.
October 17, 2011 6:33 am at 6:33 am #1101023commonsenseParticipantbuy new like everyone else whose arovos look nice.
October 17, 2011 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #1101024JotharMemberPoppa, all segulos work assuming you have the right kavanos and you follow the instructions to the letter. It took me months to get my silver segula ring of power correct from following the footnote in the kav hayashar, and the +hit and +dam values are still off.
You must remember that the aravos represent those who have no Torah and no mitzvos, and are thus easily affected by the havlei olam. The more exposure to hevel, the worse they are. So the segulah is a 3-parter:
1. the foil must be long enough to engulf the entire aravos to protect them from the havlei olam , and the Aravos must be kept in them at all times when not in use to minimize exposure to the tum’ah of the olam.
2. Torah is compared to water, and the aravos desperately need water to minimize the pernicious effects of the havlei olam. so the foil must be lined with a wet paper towel long enough to engulf the entire aravah. If the towel dries up, the water must be replaced.
3. Hislahavus is great for tefila but bad for learning, which is best done with a kerirus hada’as. So the package must be stored in the fridge, and (this was probably your mistake) the FRIDGE MUST BE PLUGGED IN.
Finally, letting your wife borrow your arbah minim seems to cause the wilting to accelerate. This is for one of 2 reasons:
1. Women, as they are on a higher spiritual plane, do not understand how exposure to the havlei olam hazeh ruins the amei ha’aretz represented by the aravos. So they leave them exposed to the hevel more than they should be.
2. “bah isha, ba satan” has a very bad effect on amei ha’aretz who don’t have Torah to be magna umatzla. so mere exposure to women can wilt the aravos and make them meisim afilu bechayeihem.
October 17, 2011 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #1101025twistedParticipantTry science instead of segula. In the NY area and most temperate zones, the salix purpura is common,(cultivated and prized for basketweaving) and it is overloaded with rooting hormone. Start some days before yomtov. Take fresh looking arovos, and re-cut the bottom of the stems by about a centimeter. If you can manage to do this under water even better. ( there are cutters of this type for flower stems, with a cutter rigged over a water container. The cut should be angled. Trim up some leaves and stand so the stem is in water with no leaves, and set in dark, so the water needs of the leaves is reduced. Sooner or later root nibs will appear. This is the ideal time to use them, and return them back to the wet dark conditions as soon as practical. If the rootlets are not to badly beaten up, you will have a seven day arava. Or, you can buy 14 aravos, keep them in the same condition, and use as needed. In a weeks time the roots will get larger, but they will stay fresh. Consider yourself lucky, the celo packed refrigerated floppy aravos in EY(salix alba) have no such recovery capacity.

October 17, 2011 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #1101031chanieMemberJothar; Thank you for the correction. In the times of the Bais Hamikdash they were taken all seven days. It was only everywhere else it was taken on the first day. See Sukkah 41a.

It’s late here and I almost read that as “keeping their aveiros fresh!!!!!!”
Regarding aveiros, I am an expert.
Regarding aravos, I can’t help you. We have an aravos tree on every block here and I take what I need except on Hoshana Rabba when I pay kids from our community to cut them as is the tradition here.

February 16, 2012 7:02 am at 7:02 am #1101040mexipalParticipantsegula for all other segulos to work:wake up at alos hashachar every morning for about three weeks and four days. Every morning jog around your city whilr reciting the entire sefer tehillim baal peh at least three times. Then kiss your aravos that you saved from succos seven years ago and the matzah saved from pesach thirteen years ago. Then and only then you should paint your face black with yellow stripes across and walk to work while saying “Ani Pesi”.
Or you could find segulos that are actually brought down in seforim. or better yet, DAVEN TO HASHEM, he loves us and is always listening.

October 3, 2012 4:47 am at 4:47 am #1101042PurimMashgiachMemberMine never go brown and I’ll tell you why. You see my father has inherited this way of doing things from my great great grandfather in law, and this is how I do it. First thing when I buy them, I hang them in my dining room upside down from the chandelier, then I leave them ther for 2.6 hours and then bake them at 350 for ten minutes. Then when I put them in the lilav sleeve, I wrap it in a yellow towel, that I saturate with exactly 2 cups of water mixed with 1 tbs of vinigar and 1 shot of triple sec. And put it in a moldy lulav case that has my lulav from the year before (I keep it there year to year). Use green rubber bands to keep the towel on.
This works so well, I never buy more than 1 set of aravos a year. Also, no one sits near me during davening so I have plenty of space to do my naanuim (I hold according to the shita that says you need to walk 4 feet three times in each direction). So far I have not had any problems, so if anyone would like to try it, I would love to know what you think of it.

We must be related!!! DO NOT under any circumstances drop any hints as to who you are on the Coffee Room, but i have the same ????? from my Shvigger, may she rest in pieces. Just instead of put it in a moldy lulav case that has my lulav from the year before , we add a step to the previous level:
Saturate with exactly 2 cups of water mixed with 1 tbs of vinegar and 1 shot of triple sec.
— Mix this in a pattern of seven times, followed by one anti-clockwise, until the mixture is thick enough. Then, as you pour it on, pledge 180 X [Gematria of your name] X [Gematria of Mothers Name] X 277 (Gematria of ????) IN DOLLARS ONLY to Kupat Ha’ir.It is nice to meet you, o relative of mine!

The aravos and hadassim are wrapped in paper towels that have been someone moistened and then put foil around that to keep the moisture in. When not in use, the entire lulav with the wrapped aravos and hadassim sit in this cup of water. Hope this helps.
