Why were the Jews expelled from England?
October 12, 2011 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #817115popa_bar_abbaParticipantBecause the English didn’t like to be reminded that there is a G-d and that you therefore need to live a moral life.
October 12, 2011 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #817116zahavasdadParticipantKing Edward I owed the jewish money lenders alot of money and didnt have the money to pay them
So he expelled them took their property and cancelled the debts
October 12, 2011 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #817117akupermaParticipantBecause the English didn’t like us. At the time, it was considered an act of piety to persecute Jews. Fortunately, most goyim weren’t all that pious. The fact that they could make money on the deal was part of it.
October 12, 2011 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #817118midwesternerParticipantThere are those who think that in recent years the Evangelical branch of the notzri’s religion are more friendly to the Israeli Jews and the muslims. They therefore forget that for nearly 2000 years, they were responsible for more sinas yisroel and Jewish blood than the muslim could ever dream of. English Government has always been bound up with the church (different tekufos different branches of the church). Throughout the middle ages, governments strongly aligned with the catholic church (the others as well, but to a lesser degree) were rodef the Jews regularly. European Jews lived in constant fear of banishment from wherever they lived. Part of the yissurim of golus.
October 12, 2011 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #817119zahavasdadParticipantEvangelicals are Protestant not Catholics, Some of them think Catholics are the worst thing on earth.
They even fought the 30 years war over it
October 12, 2011 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #817120zahavasdadParticipantWhere Jews lived in Europe had everything to do with money, If the King needed the Jewish Money Lending (This was the only profession jews were allowed to do) and Jewish Taxes, they generally were allowed to live.
For every place that kicked out Jews, there were others who begged those same jews to move.
For example when the Jews were kicked out of Spain for “religious” reasons, but they were welcomed in Rome (Right next to the Pope himself)
October 12, 2011 6:39 pm at 6:39 pm #817121akupermaParticipantThe Evangelicals to the extent they existed in the middle ages were routinely burned at the stake as heretics. While some Protestants (e.g. the Episcopalians) started as “break aways” from the Catholic Church, ones such as the Baptists, Mormons, and most of the ones we find to be a bit “funny” started as independent groups. It’s not surprising that while we sometimes have problems with the Protestant establishment (not to mention the frei Jews), we rarely have any problems with the “holy rollers” types. America is “exceptional” in that the religious movements that developed are not only not especially anti-Jewish, but also have developed totally independent of, and sometimes with opposition from, the government.
October 12, 2011 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #817122zahavasdadParticipantJews in the US tend to live where the Catholics live not where the Holy Rollers live. I think thats because the Jews Came to the US at the same time as the Irish and Italians did (who are Catholic)
For the most part there arent many jews who live in the Bible Belt.
Many Evangelicals dont consider Mormons to even be chrstian, It is issue with Romney as some quietly in the GOP are saying that (Not a political issue here, just a fact) Rick Perry brought it up
October 12, 2011 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #817123bezalelParticipantThe “Who is a Christian” debate is as fun to follow as the “Who is a Jew” debate.
October 12, 2011 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm #817124Derech HaMelechMemberEvangelicals are Protestant not Catholics, Some of them think Catholics are the worst thing on earth.
They are both anti-semites. The Catholics did the Crusades, Inquisition etc. Protestantism was formed by a guy who thought they should burn down all the Jewish homes and shuls and take away all the money from the Jews.
Pick your poison.
The “Who is a Christian” debate is as fun to follow
Now “Who is a Christian?”, but “Who is a TRUE Christian?” Then comes the No True Scotsman fallacy.
October 12, 2011 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #817125zahavasdadParticipantI have always wondered why christians Halachily are grouped, since they do not all have the same beliefs
For example
There is a group called Unitarians who do NOT belive in the trinity, Would you be allowed to go into a unitarian church (Like you can into a Mosque)
Icons are only in Catholic , Lutheran and Episcopalian (Angilcan) so the others dont have Statues and some of their churches are rather plain
October 12, 2011 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #817126HaLeiViParticipantKeep in mind that anti-Semitism was caused by many things. Religion might have been one of them. Either way, religion was definitely used as a means of inciting and unifying the masses. Today’s anti-Semites are mostly non believers. They use news and other media to propagate their ideas.
