I love honey and honey loves me. But I don’t like bees in my Sukkah,
or anywhere else near me.
How can I have my honey without the bees please?
P.S.
They must like our food too because even after I’ve spent some quality time with my honey and placed my honey back inside they come to visit and bring their friends too!
October 11, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #897755HealthParticipantUse a bee trap. Either you can buy one or make your own. That’s one of my favorite parts of Sukkos -watching all the bees in the trap. Try to have a few outside and one inside, just in case the lady misses the outside ones. Ah- the drones (male bees) all they do is lay around all day. I guess I do that too sometimes, but I would get to do it all the time if Odom wouldn’t have gotten cursed!
October 11, 2011 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #897756JotharMemberStandard bee traps work quite well, although with the bee shortage I keep reading about, maybe killing them is not a good idea.
October 11, 2011 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #897757Queen BeeMemberYou don’t want me in your sukkah? =(
October 11, 2011 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #897758zahavasdadParticipantThey are not bees, they are Wasps (Yellow Jackets). At least thats what I get
October 11, 2011 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #897759ravshalomParticipantMy personal experience would point to meat, not honey, as the bees’ primary attraction. It makes sense too – how could they possibly know you have honey?
October 11, 2011 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm #897760nitpickerParticipantIt usually isnt bees that you see in your succah or ‘Bee’ trap.
it is usually yellow jackets or other type of wasp.
They are more willing to sting than bees, but still probaply
won’t unless they feel attacked.
October 11, 2011 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #897761zahavasdadParticipantYellow Jacket Wasps do not Die when they Sting you unlike a Bee
October 11, 2011 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #897762✡onegoal™Participantzahavasdad- NO wasps die when they sting it is only bees. They like the soda and the challah and a bee trap should work to get rid of them.
October 11, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #897763A Heimishe MomParticipantIt is the meat, liver, and wine that attract the bees. Not the honey.
October 11, 2011 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #897764MiddlePathParticipantThe only bee I’d let into my sukkah is Queen Bee.
October 11, 2011 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #897765Queen BeeMemberThe Queen Bee sends her royal subjects to the sukkahs all around town. But she chooses the Sukkah on the MiddlePath.

Enjoy Shticky’s funny take on that wasp and subsequent queen bee:

Back to this thread:
Whilst all of the Queen Bee’s royal subjects are being trapped and shooed out of sukkahs all around town, the Queen Bee herself is peacefully munching on some challah with honey, undisturbed, at the sukkah on the MiddlePath.
October 11, 2011 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #897769i love coffeParticipantThank G-d I never had bees (or wasps) in my sukkah. I only get flies if its hot outside. Does having bees in your sukkah have to do with certain places where you live and season? I never heard of this.
October 11, 2011 10:56 pm at 10:56 pm #897770Bar ShattyaMembereat your honey on pesach instead

Then they either die or hibernate till next spring. The woman always has to beat the guys. If the guys are lazy, then there is a woman (queen bee) who is lazier and fatter than them.

WHOA, MP!
Thanks for your kind words. And for taking the time to notice and comment.
Everyone needs a good word now and then, and yours came at just that time.

October 12, 2011 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #897775MiddlePathParticipantayc, thanks! I’m so happy I was able to help in some way!
QB, great ending 🙂 I’m not sure what the moral of the story is, though.. Maybe you can think of it?
October 16, 2011 1:03 am at 1:03 am #897776Queen BeeMemberWell, not every story needs to have a moral, but let’s see…Hm…I’m not that great at this, but how about:
In life there will always be people who are rude, who make you feel unwanted, unwelcome and put you down. But as long as there is at least one person who makes you feel wanted, welcome, who cares, whom you can count on, you’ll be okay.
October 16, 2011 1:12 am at 1:12 am #897777zahavasdadParticipantBees werent a problem this year
Mosquitoes were. I got totally bitten up by Mosquitoes. I dont think any Wasps came into the Succah
October 16, 2011 2:14 am at 2:14 am #897778MiddlePathParticipantWow, QB! That’s really nice! I would never have thought of that…Thanks!
October 16, 2011 2:15 am at 2:15 am #897779TweetTweetParticipantI think many people had problems with mosquitoes, due the large amounts of rain that we had this year. We all got bitten up like crazy!
October 16, 2011 3:11 am at 3:11 am #897780Queen BeeMemberThanks, MP.
I didn’t have any “real” bees this year. Maybe one mosquito. I loved the rain!

October 16, 2011 3:38 am at 3:38 am #8977822scentsParticipantGumball, your allergic to mosquitos? I never heard of someone being allergic to mosquitos.
Bees and other insects are common but never heard about mosquitos.
What type of reaction do you usually get?
October 16, 2011 3:47 am at 3:47 am #897783TheGoqParticipantno skeeters, one bee.
October 17, 2011 4:43 am at 4:43 am #897784HealthParticipantFor Mosquitos -Use Off before and After-bite after.
October 17, 2011 9:41 am at 9:41 am #8977852scentsParticipantWhy bother? Just let it itch its way through. Before you know it it will be gone. Just don’t scratch the bite.
October 17, 2011 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm #897786HealthParticipant2scents – Most people when something itches -they scratch.
October 17, 2011 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #8977872scentsParticipantThat’s why I offered my unsolicited advice. Don’t scratch it! Don’t do what most people do!
October 17, 2011 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #897788Sister BearMemberWe heard an interesting thing to get rid of bugs by your Sukkah, if you use dryer sheets and put them around the perimeter of your Sukkah. We did it last year and it worked, this year there was no need to because of the rain.
October 17, 2011 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #897789twistedParticipantEating garlic on a regular basis ( a clove every twelve hours) makes you mosquito proof after twenty four hours. It gives your breath, your blood, and your perspiration a faint garlic odor that repels the mosquitos, and some people too.
Mosquitos are just another delicacy in the wondrous web of life and food. Bats, birds, and reptiles feast on bugs, and mosquitos are a favorite.
October 17, 2011 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #897790am yisrael chaiParticipantEat garlic and less sugar.
That should keep the insects (and people?) away 😉
October 17, 2011 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #897791AinOhdMilvadoParticipantIf you don’t mind your sukkah smelling like Italian salad dressing, garlic really does work to repel mosquitos.
Get a spray bottle (the best is the large can type used to spray a garden, but a clean, well washed out windex bottle will do) put in several spoonfulls of garlic powder and water. Shake it very well. Best if you let it sit for a while first. Then spray all around the sukkah – the schach, the walls, ALL over. The natural chemical in garlic is actually the active ingredient in the mosquito repellent used by exterminators.
August 29, 2012 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #897792Melanie23MemberMy dad is manufacturing a product called BeeFreeSukkah bee traps! You can google it. They are beautiful and will solve your bee problems.
August 30, 2012 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #897793BaalHaboozeParticipantWow Melanie23! that looks really nice do they sell them in stores or does it have to be ordered over the internet? In any case, neat idea!
August 30, 2012 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #897794Shopping613 🌠ParticipantThe next time a bee falls in your grapejuice bottle or honey just do what I do: since the rest of the bottle is unedible my family ussually splits the contents evenly into cups and put them around the sukkah…..its very effective!
September 27, 2012 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #897795BaalHaboozeParticipantHalacha question:
On Yom Tov, can I cover a bee with a plastic cup when it lands on the sukkah table?
