I Just read this and have to share it with you. Its sent by “simcha minute” – brief inspirational quotes by R’ Avigdor Miller.
“The most important thing on Yom Kippur is to come back to Hashem. And you come back to Him by realizing all the things that in the past year that were performed that were not in accordance with His wishes. (Tape 524)”

October 7, 2011 8:15 am at 8:15 am #975046Shticky GuyParticipantYes there are already yom kippur threads but this one is trying to highlight the most important aspect of YK, not general discussions and vertlach etc.
The most important thing on YK may be teshuva and coming closer to Hashem. But although it is the most important thing, it is not the number one on the list. It’s the most important yet only number two. Why? Because Hashem doesnt give kappora ‘ad sheyiratzeh es chavero’. So number 1 is asking everyone for mechilla and only then can we be ready for the real number 1 of teshuva!
October 7, 2011 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #975047yungerman1ParticipantLets not forget that the most important thing to do -or rather not to do- on Yom Kippur is what the Torah tells us. The 5 things that are forbidden on Yom Kippur.
October 7, 2011 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #975048Sam2ParticipantYungerman: While I would normally love a statement like that, I think a Passuk in Yeshayahu disagrees with you. Those are prerequisites to spending the day properly, but they are not the Ikkar.
October 7, 2011 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #975049yungerman1ParticipantSam2- What I mean to say is that its probably better to sleep all yom kippur and not break the fast than to stay awake and try to daven and have to break the fast. Do you agree?
October 7, 2011 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #975050BaalHaboozeParticipantI love Rabbi A. Miller z”l, his legend and wise words will live forever.
Other important things:
1) Yes it’s difficult to fast, to stand and to daven so many hours, and even to do Teshuva. But you STILL gotta greet your fellow yid with A CHEERFUL SMILE!
2) Keep in mind how FORTUNATE we are to have Yom Kippur once EVERY year. can you just imagine if it would come around once a Yovel, how much we would anticipate it and cherish it!
3) Try to put in some learning during the day. Koveaya Eetim B’Torah applies even on YK.

October 7, 2011 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm #975052Sam2ParticipantYungerman: Of course. Although someone who has to sleep all day may be getting close to someone who has to eat. It’s a case-by-case thing, but I do agree with you in theory. But still, someone who fasts but doesn’t do T’shuvah has fulfilled the Mitzvah of fasting (and avoided the Lav of not fasting) but has not accomplished the purpose of Yom Kippur.
October 7, 2011 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #975053yungerman1ParticipantAgreed. And I apologize if I was oiver on ????? ?????.
October 7, 2011 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #975054sam4321ParticipantThe Nefesh Hacahim Shar bais is a great preparation for davening.

imho the most important thing on yom kippur is to make that first baby step in the right direction. to show hashem that you really really want to do teshuva, and make a concrete move towards tikun hamidos, by writing down on erev y”k your new year’s resolution
September 11, 2013 4:38 pm at 4:38 pm #975057ToiParticipantmost important thing(s) to do are to observe the 5 inuyim and not be chayiv karress.
September 11, 2013 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #975058EnderParticipantThe single most important thing on Yom Kippur is fasting.

most important thing(s) to do are to observe the 5 inuyim and not be chayiv karress.
My guess is that Rav Miller ZT”L and the OP took it as a given that the restrictions of Yom Kippur would be observed, and were addressing what ideas and thoughts of the day were the most important.
September 11, 2013 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #975060OhTeeDeeParticipantA good breakfast!
September 11, 2013 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #975061OhTeeDeeParticipantyungerman1 – where does the torah tell us those 5 things that we cannot do on YK?
September 11, 2013 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #975062takahmamashParticipantThe most important thing on Y”K is ending on time.
The second most important thing (which is actually after Y”K) is getting a tremp home so I don’t have to walk.
September 11, 2013 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #975063ToiParticipantah ok. cheerios.
September 11, 2013 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #975064Rav TuvParticipantA Shtark Neilah.
September 16, 2013 6:52 am at 6:52 am #975065takahmamashParticipantBreak: 2.5 hours
The “extra” hour was good in a way – they didn’t have to rush through mincha so the Kohanim would have time to duchen at the end of n’eila.
