Can someone tell me the name a good mussar book that is more practical than condemning? I am almost done with the one that I have and would like a seamless transition to more learning.

best mussar book is messilas yesharim – but you need a rebbe to teach you how to read it – otherwise it does not resinate.

to suggest any kind of mussar sefer we need more details of what interests you.Like what sefer did you just finish?

Do you want more classic or more recent seforim?

where do you want this avoda to take you? to a better understanding of yom kippur or tikun hamidos? heavy or light?

ABA: Why can’t one learn Mesilas Yeshorim on their own?

R’ Chaim Volozhiner would probably object to Nefesh Hachaim being referred to as mussar. It’s more machshava/hashkafa.

That is true, but it is borderline everything(shar alef)

    But it is more haskafa.

??? ????? is not really mussar any more than Tanya. It’s machshava hamevi l’ydei maaseh. Of course some would argue that that’s better than mussar.

Whatever it may be it is a very powerful sefer.

To quote someone from Yeshivah with me, “There is no more powerful Mussar than actually learning Halacha.” Of course, that’s probably not what you’re looking for here.

Too many basic concepts that he talks about that most people don’t know what he means by them, ie. chadidus, avodah temimah, dvaikus….

I agree with the Mesilas Yesharim advocates, though the first perek really cannot be understood properly without a lot of background. But the rest I think is very worthwhile even if you don’t have a rebbi or a commentary offhand.

I am still going with Alei Shur though, if you have a decent command of Modern Hebrew. It’s a masterpiece and written by someone who lived in our generation.

Avodah hatemima in perek Taharah. Dveikus in perek Chelkei ha’Chassidus.

    Just a cute story:

Someone once asked the Vilna Goan which is the best mussar sefer. He pointed the the wall in the back of the room. So the person went to the back, but the only seforim on the shelf were meforshim on the gemorah, some gemorahs, etc, but no musser sefer. So he tells the VG there aren’t any mussar seforim here on the shelf!? The Vilna Goan smiles and points up, just above the seforim shrank where a clock was hanging on the wall. “That clock is the bestmussar sefer!”

    🙂

Tamar Devoira is a short, yet powerful sefer.

    #814776

    very difficult and Kabbalistic though

Mod-80, I agree 100% !! Any one of Rabbi Avigdor Miller’s books/seforim are indeed fantastic. His tapes are one of a kind as well. But that’s perhaps for a different thread 🙂

    #814780

i just started thursday night tape number four hundred and one.

i listened to first hundred or so in this series about 10 times for each one.

Kav ha-Yashar (lit. The Just Measure) authored by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Kaidanover, is one of the most popular works of musar literature of the last three hundred years. First published in 1705, it has appeared in over 80 editions, in nearly every country around the world. The work was famous for uplifting the spirits of Jewish communities in Europe after the Chmelnitzki Massacres of 1648-1649.

There is an English translation published by Metsudah.

I don’t remember for sure, but I think it was on a Rabbi Avigdor Miller tape, that he mentioned that one of the greatest mussar sefer that jews have is actually the good ‘ol siddur! If one would study the translation, meforshim, and even an english sefer on tefilla, one can grow very great in that area, and gain just as much as any mussar seforim can accomplish.

I agree with Moderator-80 and BaalHabooze that Rav Avigdor Miller ZT”L’s English seforim and tapes are some of the best mussar you will find anywhere.

Hey, I hope I’m not too late but there is this great sefer “The Six Constant Mitzvos” that is a clear, practical and easy to read sefer on how to develop and build your relationship with HKBH. The new version is even cut up into a daily learning track tat you can finish in 50 days. It will change the way you relate to Hashem, His Torah and His Mitzvos.

    Best two mussar sefarim:

Tzaddik Yesod Olam, by Simcha Raz, a biography of Reb Aryeh Levine ZTL.

Holy Brother, by Yitta Mandelbaum, about Reb Shlomo Carlebach.
