Quite a few of my teachers have told me that I’m eligable to enter the chidon hatanach. I’m from a very frum Bais Yaakov (and family) so I cannot represent my school. I haven’t said anything to anyone. I wanted to know, what are your feelings on the topic?
What is chidon hatanach?
I just googled it. I would definitely stay away from it.
I was in it as were several other very frum people…wonderful experience and learned a lot
Shouldn’t you be proud of what you learned? And if your teachers are suggesting it knowing who you are and who you represent, why is it bad for you? If your teachers think you should, and it is something you would like to do, then why are you trying to find a negative in it rather than the positive in it? If you were the adult and it was your child what would you advise?

Whats Tanach? Just kidding. I was a contestant in the national 40-somthig years ago, and there were GIRLS there, but that didn’t hit my radar because there were GIRLS in school too, a school with a sort of chareidi, very very zionist administration, doing the best they could with the circumstances outside Brooklyn. Would I send my kids (more likely grandkids)? No, they are measurably more chareidi than myself, and ccnsequently, they don’t know enough to compete, and the tanach my boys do know, is because they made it a project to learn by themselves.

That’s because they focus on Gemorah more than Tanach. What’s wrong with that?
Teach the boys Tanach! And bekiyus, meaning the names of the parshiyos in order, the dates of the yomim tovim, etc. It’s amazing what the kids are not taught nowadays.
First of all, congrats bekitzur on your eligibility and achievements. That’s impressive.

A brother of mine won in N.Y. many years ago and won a trip to EY to compete there. The program there was mixed and not at all the proper environment for a bas yisroel and especialy a bais yaakov girl.
mak: If it’s a bad environment for a beis yaakov girl, it is also a bad environment for a yeshiva boy.

Go for it. It will be a wonderful experience and will help you grow in every way. You will meet kids from all over the world and will appreciate that knowledge of our sifrei kodesh is the best uniter of all. Ali V’hatzlichi!
posters with first hand knowledge say that its spiritually not safe. what more is there to deliberate.
Pardon me, toi, but I am a poster with first hand knowledge and don’t recall saying such a thing.
I thought it was an absolutely wonderful experience.
The first part is taking a test in your home area- I would have to imagine most people here have done that. So why not start off here and take it one day at a time.
If your deliberation is what happens if Bekitzur wins and gets to travel to E”Y to take a test, what a gift! And spiritually uplifting! (She can go with an adult.)
Her teachers who know her are advising her to participate.
To me it’s a no-brainer.
How does travelling with an adult alleviate a spiritually inappropriate setting?
Also, I’m not sure what teachers she is referring to (who said she is eligible not that they are advising it) since she said her beis yaakov wouldn’t allow it.
Unless I missed, the ONE poster who participated said that her kids shouldn’t go as they didn’t learn enough to participate.
The people here who say that it’s spiritually inappropriate are the ones who weren’t in it!
How is learning spiritually inappropriate??? Or perhaps the HOLY LAND isn’t spiritual enough? Now how about LEARNING in the HOLY LAND???

Uh, that’s because they were wise enough not to go. If you know it is a spiritual danger you don’t go to double-check. Nor do you need to go to Mass on Sunday to know that it is spiritually destructive.
