I am davening at a yeshivish minyan, and there is no way I can daven through the whole time.
Last year I made some significant headway in learning over Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
Does anyone else do this?
(Don’t tell me to daven somewhere else. I don’t see why that is a better idea.)
I do. It’s unclear how appropriate it is though. I try to read through all of the commentary and Halachos in the Artscroll Machzor before I actually open a different Sefer though. Also, it’s actually Assur if it will cause you to miss an Amen or cause other people to talk/read outside materials during Chazaras Hashatz.
Sure, I do it too. I usually daven at a shul that’s done before 1; this year I’m davening at a shul that probably won’t be done before 2:30. I’m hoping to go through the whole Masechta Rosh Hashana, we’ll see how far I get.
Gemara or Mishnayos?
You are supposed to pay attention and answer amen during chazaras hashatz all year long.
During Rosh Hashana Mussaf this is even more important because most shuls nowadays blow shofar during chazaras hashatz instead of during the silent shmoneh esrei so we are yotzei the inyan of shofar during tefilla by listening to chazaras hashatz.
All Nusach Sefard shuls and many Nusach Ashkenaz shuls blow shofar during the silent shemoneh esrei.
I only know of nusach ashkenaz and all shuls I’ve davened in have done it during chazaras hashatz. I see it is in the Artscroll Machzor in gray so I guess there are some who do it that way but I haven’t heard of any shuls that actually do this.
I have spent Rosh HaShannah in two different shuls over the past twenty three years. Both daven Nusach Ashkenaz. One shul blows during the silent Amidah and the other does not.

I also have a hard time with minyan, but I try very hard to get to a shul for Rosh hashana.
Twice over twenty three years is pretty weak.
I’m sorry, I don’t see how my statement says that I made it to shul only twice in the last twenty three years.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. This year I didn’t. Learning during chazoras hashatz doesn’t make it “better.” I’d rather go outside and shmooze. I’m not listening, and that way I’d at least get some air.

Gemara. And I made it! I basically skimmed through the technical shemita gemaras etc. I’m kind of embarrassed that I spent so much time not paying attention to the davening though. But it’s not my fault they drag it out so long. Don’t expect me to finish Yoma on Yom Kippur though…
Something I was pondering, maybe someone can help me:
The Gemara (17a) says that “rav chesed” means (acc. to Beis Hillel) that Hashem leans toward kindness. How does he do this? There is a three way machlokes. R’ Eliezer says he pushes down the scale of good deeds. R’ Yose bar Chanina says no, what he does is he lifts up the scale of bad deeds. D’bei R’ Yishmael says you got it all wrong! What he does is each time a bad deed comes he puts it on the scale for a second and then quickly takes it away!
Clearly there is some hidden meaning in this Gemara I just can’t seem to figure it out. Anyone?
