does this bother anyone else? you get a list of school supplies in middle of the summer, go out buy the whole list, then your kid comes home first day of school , my rebbi said i need this my teacher said i need that?
then at the end of the year half the stuff wasn’t used anyway. don’t the teachers realize this stuff costs money? and to do it for a whole family?
and another thing, why do they need specialty supplies? glue sticks 10 for a dollar in staples or walmart? you can be sure the teacher will ask for the 2.678oz glue stick no other one is ok. and you can only get it in cashmart for 8.99each. and you need 2. for each kid.
i mean come on! i need to buy an 8 pocket folder? 4 – 2 pocket are no good ? why not?
September 8, 2011 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #808079deiyezoogerMemberI know a school that ask the parents NOT to buy any school suplies, instead the kids have to bring $10-$15 and the school suplies the suplies. That way the parents don’t have to run around town guessing exectly what the teacher had in mind. Besids the school buys in bulk so they get a better price and there is no competition everyone has the same simple suplies.

September 9, 2011 12:18 am at 12:18 am #808082golden momMemberwelcome to being a mother of school aged kids!
my kids needed seforim it just gave basic didnt say specific so i gave it it happened to be a sefer my other child used last yr but this year its not good enough
what about the book fee we pay every yr approx $35 a kid what books do they get i never see any home
September 9, 2011 11:46 am at 11:46 am #808083commonsenseParticipantgolden, how about the school assigning seforim that are not available. for the second year in a row we had to run around to a bunch of different seforim stores because no one had the exact version of the sefer the Rebbi wanted. If the schools know they will be assigning specific versions of seforim they need to either sell them or make sure some stores are well stocked with what they want and let the parents know where to buy it. I know for a fact I was not the only one having a hard time with this.

September 11, 2011 11:28 am at 11:28 am #808088klugeryidParticipantany teachers care to comment?
September 11, 2011 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #808089happiestMemberI’m a teacher but for 5 year olds so I can’t really comment. The only school supplies we ask them to bring is a folder. We used to ask for 2 marble notebooks but even got rid of that.
I do want to say though that the only time we were ever asked for a book fee was in highschool when they gave us textbooks and the fee was refunded to us at the end of every year provided that we returned all our books intact. This was definitely a good way of getting us to treat our things properly.
I like the solution of having the school buy the school supplies and the parents sending in money to cover the cost but I’m sure there would be a parent (atleast one) complaining that this is not acceptable for some reason.
Good luck to all of you mothers though!
September 11, 2011 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #808090golden momMemberhaving the school buy the books and we pay for it is great it should be optional not manditory when u have bl”h more than one kid u have that sefer or book already y do i have to buy it again
September 11, 2011 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #808091klugeryidParticipanthappiest you know what the problem would be, schools making money on the supplies. i still think it is the best solution. but the teachers also have to update what they really use
September 11, 2011 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #808092commonsenseParticipantasking for the 150 page notebook is ridiculous. Kids rarely finish up the 100 page notebooks that are easily available for cheap. It eats me up when they come home with those 150 sheet notebooks that are $2.89 and require a trip to a special store and they’ve only used 20 pages. teachers need to read over the school lists and evaluate what they will really use. I have no problem getting the exact supplies as long as they will be used.
