I was in Chicago for shabbos, and I picked up an English Torah newsletter and read it during davening. (Yes, during davening.) There was a story from the Ben Ish Chai, with a wise quote from him.
The quote was in Yiddish. Now, the newsletter noted that he had said it in Arabic. So why did they translate it to Yiddish?
Because they are retarded.
(This was yotzei motzaei shabbos trolling because half the CR is going to yell at me for using the term “retarded”. And I don’t care- although I’m willing to discuss it.)
September 4, 2011 2:35 am at 2:35 am #918650am yisrael chaiParticipantPerhaps we can skip the trolling part and just impart the Ben Ish Chai’s words of wisdom.
What was the vort/wise quote?
September 4, 2011 2:37 am at 2:37 am #918651popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhat was the vort/wise quote?
I don’t even remember. I was too busy being struck with the idiocy of translating a quote from Arabic to Yiddish for an English audience.
September 4, 2011 2:40 am at 2:40 am #918652ItcheSrulikMemberI concur.
September 4, 2011 2:43 am at 2:43 am #918653oomisParticipantIt was not retarded, it was foolish. Retarded means “slower.”
September 4, 2011 2:44 am at 2:44 am #918654squeakParticipantIt sounds better in Yiddish?
😉
September 4, 2011 2:45 am at 2:45 am #918655yitayningwutParticipantYes, but he was referring to the colloquial usage of the word. Hence the trolling aspect.
September 4, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #918656popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt was not retarded, it was foolish. Retarded means “slower.”
That is more accurate. But I know people who are fools and I try to be sensitive by not using that word to denigrate people.
And look, I got squeak to post.
September 4, 2011 2:48 am at 2:48 am #918657yitayningwutParticipantBut I know people who are fools and I try to be sensitive by not using that word to denigrate people.
LOL!
September 4, 2011 2:50 am at 2:50 am #918658oomisParticipantYitayninwut – I agree.
September 4, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #918659gefenParticipantpopa – were you here for an aufruf or a bar mitzva?
if so, are you related to the ppl?
if so, WE MIGHT BE RELATED!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 4, 2011 3:00 am at 3:00 am #918660gefenParticipantum … did we see each other in shul? of course i mean after davening – at the kiddush or meal. after all we in chicago do have mechitzas in our shuls.
September 4, 2011 3:03 am at 3:03 am #918661squeakParticipantpopa, I’m at your beck and call.
September 4, 2011 3:08 am at 3:08 am #918662popa_bar_abbaParticipantgefen: Nope, sorry. Neither.
squeak: Great. Please admit I am funnier.
September 4, 2011 3:09 am at 3:09 am #918663yitayningwutParticipantgefen- I think he was there to use the wifi in his suit at the Westin.
September 4, 2011 3:09 am at 3:09 am #918664am yisrael chaiParticipantbetter beck and call than bicker and brawl
September 4, 2011 3:12 am at 3:12 am #918665gefenParticipantcan you tell us what shul/neighborhood you were in?
September 4, 2011 3:13 am at 3:13 am #918666September 4, 2011 3:18 am at 3:18 am #918667popa_bar_abbaParticipantSqueak: So you did. Hmmm. I’m not as convinced.
gefen: Peterson Park, davened this morning at the Peterson Park kollel. Didn’t stay for kiddush because they have a shiur first, and who the blazes wants to stay for a shiur when there is good scotch where I was staying with no shiur.
September 4, 2011 3:22 am at 3:22 am #918668squeakParticipantYou’re really sweet. If we both lived in New York, maybe we could get hitched.
September 4, 2011 3:25 am at 3:25 am #918669popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf we both lived in New York, maybe we could get hitched.
Yes, in NY we could.
September 4, 2011 3:25 am at 3:25 am #918670gefenParticipantoh i know where that is! not far from us. are you still in chicago or did you leave already?
September 4, 2011 3:26 am at 3:26 am #918671gefenParticipantwanna come over for melava malka and get to meet the people who come here for family time? 🙂
September 4, 2011 3:29 am at 3:29 am #918672popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m still here, but we’re making pizza where I’m staying.
I’ll be here part of this week. I didn’t decide yet.
September 4, 2011 3:30 am at 3:30 am #918673gefenParticipantyitayningwut – he couldn’t be at the westin as there aren’t any in peterson park. so i guess he got his good scotch at someone’s house.
btw – you have a very interesting screen name – i can’t even pronounce it. 😉
September 4, 2011 3:31 am at 3:31 am #918674squeakParticipantWow. There really is a different standard on M”S. That last part should never have passed moderation, and I only put it in to test the phenomenon.
September 4, 2011 3:43 am at 3:43 am #918675squeakParticipantThat is to say – you are sweet, but not that sweet. Plus, you are funnier. But let’s not debate it or Joseph will start a poll.
September 4, 2011 3:45 am at 3:45 am #918676YehudahTzviParticipantpopa_bar_abba: It is dergrading to refer to something that you don’t like as “retarded.” Mental retardation is a disability.
September 4, 2011 3:47 am at 3:47 am #918677gefenParticipantooh – pizza – so can we come to you? jk
so i guess we won’t meet this time, cuz we are IY”H leaving for Detroit tomorrow and staying a couple of days. we are going there for the wedding of the person who had his aufruf here today.
so close yet so far (for us to meet, i mean) maybe next time
hope you enjoyed your Shabbos here and will enjoy the rest of your stay in our very friendly town. (i’m actually not from here originally but i like it here)
September 4, 2011 3:47 am at 3:47 am #918678yitayningwutParticipantgefen- He was all excited about getting his free wifi in his suit there earlier in the week, so I figured maybe he stayed in Chicago to make use of another week of seltzer and wifi at the Westin, even if he didn’t actually stay there for Shabbos. Please stop me if I’m over-thinking this…
Oh, and as for my screen name, I know there are some here here who get it, and Popa is one of them. Not trying to keep it a secret. Though I like to look interesting and mysterious 😉
September 4, 2011 3:48 am at 3:48 am #918679popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt is dergrading to refer to something that you don’t like as “retarded.” Mental retardation is a disability.
Firstly, I don’t “not like them”; I just think they are stupid.
Secondly, who said anything about mental retardation? I meant flame retardant.
September 4, 2011 4:01 am at 4:01 am #918680deiyezoogerMemberNYS officialy banded the use of the word “retarded” in all state cominucations,
September 4, 2011 4:05 am at 4:05 am #918681gefenParticipantSo popa – i guess that’s a “no” to us coming to you for pizza 😉
(see my previous post)
s’ok – we gotta get to bed early anyway for our BIG TRIP LOL.
btw – was it the L’kutei P’shatim you were reading.
btw2 – if ur still here wednesday, let us know.
September 4, 2011 4:20 am at 4:20 am #918682YehudahTzviParticipantRetarded people are not “stupid.” The Chazon Ish would stand up when he saw a retarded person because he considered them holy individuals.
“Secondly, who said anything about mental retardation? I meant flame retardant.”
Joke if you must, but words have consequences and you are obviously insensitive to other people’s feelings.

“what are you trying to say?”
Would you like the translation in Arabic or Yiddish?
September 4, 2011 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #918688popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am asking how it is relevant to the conversation.
September 4, 2011 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #918689am yisrael chaiParticipantI was jk 🙂
You were originally complaining about the Ben Ish Chai’S vort being translated from Arabic to Yiddish…unless you’ve forgotten what it was that you were complaining about?!
Clearly the poster felt that you were being offensive and an ????? towards those who suffer from delays & were using that term freely. He is stating that the origins of this behavior is being a ???? inappropriately.
September 4, 2011 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #918690WIYMemberThis is starting to get personal….
September 4, 2011 7:27 pm at 7:27 pm #918691ItcheSrulikMemberEveryone has been too busy quibbling over the word “retarded” to correct popa’s most serious error. Poppa, you fail to understand that Yiddish (Judeo-German) is much, much, much holier than lehavdil Judeo-Arabic and that to insinuate that the Ben Ish Chai spoke anything other than Yiddish would be lashon harah and bizui talmidei chachamim.
September 4, 2011 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #918692gefenParticipantpopa – the reason your thread was falling off the page is because you haven’t answered me in a while. 🙂 jk – of course!
January 9, 2013 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #918693popa_bar_abbaParticipantSecondly, who said anything about mental retardation? I meant flame retardant.
Bumped for relevance to current NYC events.
January 9, 2013 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #918694WIYMemberThere are many retarded things happening every minute in NYC.
January 10, 2013 4:35 am at 4:35 am #918695MammeleParticipantPopa, is this about your subtitle? Are you insinuating that it needs to be changed? Perhaps Bloomberg is about to declare it illegal, and who wants to mess with him? I mean does it matter if you’re only semi- in this make-believe place here or do we need to be more stringent than with large sodas? Is the CR under anybody’s jurisdiction or only under G-d?
These questions are becoming too difficult for me to ponder, I may have caught some retardation…
