R Pinchas Sheinberg was asked a shaila regarding God (as opposed to G-d) being written on a computer. He said it was fine. See the sefer called The Question Market for this. It deals with shailas (almost all to R sheinberg) about day to day things like this.

Rav Elyashiv holds that it’s not okay. I don’t think anyone holds like this though. R’ Elyashiv holds that a computer counts as real writing and thus any Divrei Torah or Shem Hashem written on a computer cannot be erased-i.e. the screen can never be changed or shut off. (I don’t know if this was published anywhere, I heard this from a big Rov who discussed the issue with R’ Elyashiv at length.)

I was very interested about sheim hashem written on a kindle, because the way the kindle presents graphics on the screen is different and more permanent. I never asked the shayla though…

This is interesting to me. I once worked for a Jewish book publishing company and was given the assignment to edit a special Birchas Hamazon that was being annotated by Rav Immanuel Jakubowitz (sp?)who was then Chief Rabbi of England. He repeatedly wrote the name out as G o d (no spaces), and I respectfully wrote in my recommendations, that it was more typically written as G-d and I would like to make the changes. He sent me back a polite thank you note and said that it should be written exactly as he specified, that there was no reason to write a dash and omit the o. We did it his way, of course.

Oomis: There is never an Issur to write a translation of Hashem’s name in any language. There is just a Chashash that people might not treat it properly or they might C”V throw it out. If it is a Sefer or a Bentcher anyway there is no reason to worry about this and no reason to use the dash. Then again, unless you hold by R’ Elyashiv, there would be no reason not to spell it out normally on the internet/computer screen either.

Is God a dirty word that we need to censor His name?

Itche, I like your posts, but I think you accidentally went over the line here. Whether your rav holds we do write it or don’t, I’m sure he doesn’t make fun of it. No?

    You’re 100% right. I was being “a bit over the top.” 🙂

Though in my opinion, there is a lot to be gained by talking about Torah, including philosophy/theology (deios in Hebrew) in English.

The idea is that we revere Hashem’s Name in ANY language, and just as we do not pronounce the Shem, unless making a bracha or saying a tefila, so too, some hold that we should not even write out the entire secular Name, out of Kovod.

oomis: We don’t pronounce the shem outside of the Temple.

Abbelleh: Thanks for reminding me about the kindle. I was going to ask Rav Belsky about it when I got one but I didn’t use it much so the shaila wasn’t necessary.

So according to R’ Elyashiv (although apparently he was ???? from what he said after somebody explained to him at depth how computers work – but i have no reliable source) — No jewish publisher can bring out any ??????? or ??????? Why aren’t we boycotting Artscroll if they are working without ????? How does ???? ????? work?

Toi is right. The title is jarring.
