Hi, I am newly married – a few months – and we are looking at options for places to move where there are kollels I can learn in. We are currently in a small out-of-town community where I am learning in the kollel afternoon seder, but it is really not a great place to be to really shteig as it is very tiny (4 people).
My wife will not – not – consider anywhere in New York. We have talked about Baltimore, Lakewood, and Chicago. I didn’t really like Chicago, and there aren’t any really sizable kollels. I would love either Baltimore or Lakewood but my wife might not like Baltimore so much, and she is worried about finding engineering jobs in the Lakewood area (no idea if this is a real concern or not).
Are there any other sizable, high level kollels in America?

August 31, 2011 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #803992sbergerMemberI’d rather not say, I am half regretting posting this as is. If you have any info on engineering job availability in the Lakewood area, let me know.

Telshe Yeshiva has a couple dozen. Chicago Community Kollel has almost that many. Ohel Torah has 16. Skokie Yeshiva has some more. And there are some others as well. (Those would be of the non-sizable variety) PLus there are large chaburos of baalei batim in each of those and many others as well. Telshe Yeshiva has more than 150 bochurim in addition to the kollel, so there’s [plenty decent chaburos to speak with in learning.
Not to say that any of these are looking for outsiders at this minute, but to say they don’t exist shows gross ignorance on the part of one who supposedly is doing research on out of town!

August 31, 2011 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #803997ToiParticipantya but tis really easy. if al qaida can do it, anyone can. and you can live in an igloo!
August 31, 2011 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #803998yeshivaguy45ParticipantThere’s a large kollel in Cleveland Heights headed by Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld and Rabbi Grunwald (I forgot his first name). There’s also a kollel in Denver which has about 10 yungerleit, along with baalebaatim who come during morning seder. In Chicago, there are several large kollelim-Chicago Community Kollel, Adas Yeshurun (Choshen Mishpat Kollel), Telshe Yeshiva, Kollel Ohel Torah.
Also I think there’s a large kollel in Miami.

August 31, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #804000gavra_at_workParticipantDecide which is more critical, her job or your learning, and move from there.
Without the additional information as per what type of engineer she is, there is no way I can give additional advice.
August 31, 2011 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #804001collegegradMemberMost of out town cities have a Kollels, the paying ones may be hard to get into though. Chicago, Toronto, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Detroit, Savannah, Denver, Miami, LA and the list goes on.
August 31, 2011 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #804002kol daveedMemberLos Angeles has a few kollelim between 10-20 avreichem each and I’m there are certainly engineering jobs here that pay well.
August 31, 2011 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #804003littleappleMemberWhat Far Rockaway really has a different feel than rest of NY more small townie but close enough for jobs? Three or four medium sized kollels.
