is there really gonna be a hurricane in new york city? i don’t know what to expect! what happens if someone dies? who has a cellar, cuz i dont! i’m petrified! tell me what to do cuz i’ve never been in a hurricane before!
August 24, 2011 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #802197bptParticipantNothing terrible happens. You get to meet Tin Man, the Lion, Scarecrow, the Wizard of OZ.
Oh, and dont let the lady in the pointed hat intimidate you.
Really. Its just a huge rainstorm. Its a bigger problem when its Succos, and the schach starts flying.
August 24, 2011 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #802198deiyezoogerMemberThere is much greater risk for someone to die in a car accident or even from lightening then from a hurricane. And the most deathly wheather is the one who gets the least attention; extream heat.
August 24, 2011 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #802199yossi z.MemberI think hurricane is getting mistaken for tornado. Hurricane is as was said basically just a huge rainstorm (stronger winds too) and the tornado is what brings you to Oz.
😀 Zuberman! 😀
August 25, 2011 12:20 am at 12:20 am #802200Sam2ParticipantThere is a huge difference between tornadoes and hurricanes. However, hurricanes can be just as deadly if you ignore them or don’t take precautions. If you don’t have a television, keep the internet on a laptop on a local weather site and follow instructions. Googling worst-case scenarios doesn’t hurt either. Bad weather can be deadly, but those who are prepared very rarely get hurt.
August 25, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #802201HaLeiViParticipantIs the hurricane coming to New York or is it the outer arms thereof?
August 25, 2011 3:17 am at 3:17 am #802202amazingirl97Participanti’m not sure thats why i’m so scared because it’s coming close to me where i live. but now i’m more comforted thanks to all the wonderful people in the coffee room! thanks you guys!
August 25, 2011 4:44 am at 4:44 am #802203ronrsrMembervery few people are hurt by the winds of a hurricane, presuming that they stay inside during the whole thing, and don’t make the mistake of going outside during the eye.
Many hurricane injuries come from getting hit by flying objects that are sent speeding aloft by the wins, so your patio furniture, home siding, branches of trees become deadly objects. But you can avoid these mostly just by staying in your home. If you don’t feel safe at home, go to a shelter such as the New Orleans Superdome or a local school.
Much more damage is done by the storm surge, so if you live near the shore, move inland or listen to the radio very carefully for evacuation procedures. Don’t ignore them.
Hurricanes do much property damage, but in the US they kill very few people. Hot weather, for instance, is a much more deadly form of weather, killing 100s of times more people than hurricanes.
I’ve been through four or five in the New York and Boston area, starting with the famous Jewish hurricane, Hurricane (Queen) Esther in 1961. The house shakes, the windows shake, it rains a lot, lots of debris and witches on broomsticks fly by your window, then it gets real quiet for a while (the eye of the storm) and then the storm starts again with great violence. The witches and patio furniture fly in the opposite direction.
My advice: unless you’re on the coast and under an evacuation order, just sit back and enjoy it, it’s a wonder to behold.
During the last heat wave, at least five people died of weather-related causes in Brooklyn alone.
So, don’t be scared. You survived the deadly hot weather, a hurricane should seem like a walk in the park.

I think Deiyezooger meant lightning. Lightening happens late in pregnancy. One letter really does make a difference, but would be untznius for me to explain why.

August 25, 2011 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #802218YW Moderator-80Membera very nice map of the **projected** path, when it might arrive, and how strong it will be when it does
August 25, 2011 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #802219adorableParticipant80 thank you
August 25, 2011 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #802220YW Moderator-80Membera quote fom weather.com:
Our projected path map below continues to paint an ominous picture by pointing Hurricane Irene right in the direction of the East Coast this weekend. The latest computer model guidance confirms this threat and the first hurricane watches have been issued for the United States.
The potential is real for the strongest hurricane hit on the Northeast in at least a couple decades this weekend!
August 25, 2011 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #802221adorableParticipantomg this is going to be one tough weekend.
August 25, 2011 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #802224ronrsrMemberYou overestimate the inconvenience. For you it will just be a rainy weekend and a few hours of lots of wind-driven rain.
Take your precautions, then sit back and enjoy it.
To quote W.S. Gilbert:
There is beauty n the bellow of a blast
There is grandeur in the growling of a gale
There is eloquent outpouring
When the lion is a-roaring
Or the tiger is a-lashing of its tail.
August 25, 2011 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #802225TweetTweetParticipantThere’s nothing to scared about. Yes this will be one of the strongest hurricanes to hit NYC, and there will be many power outages. Just stay home and stay off those roads. The roads and highways will be crazy with tree branches scattered all over. Plus it’s hard to drive in such powerful winds. Just stay home (assuming you don’t live on the beach or near water), relax and enjoy!
August 25, 2011 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #802226happy faceMemberThis Hurricane is starting to worry me!!! How do we prepare for it??? P.s.- i wouldn’t mind if it would hit on Monday instead of Sunday!! (day off from work maybe!!) Sunday, Not a good day at all!!!! it’s the last Sunday of the summer!! I had plans!!… i can’t complain, Hashem knows what’s best for us!! I hope it won’t be anything serious at the end!!
August 25, 2011 7:55 pm at 7:55 pm #802227YW Moderator-80Memberit wont be a hurricane if and when it hits ny
it will be a very large strong storm
August 25, 2011 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #802228HealthParticipantTweetTweet -The problem is people don’t stay indoors. If you want to go to shul, only go to one very close by. Don’t drive unless you have to.

August 26, 2011 9:30 pm at 9:30 pm #802237LSHParticipantFocus on Shabbos properly and you will not experience it. Shabbos is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 26, 2011 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #802238ronrsrMemberFocus on preparation for the extreme weather first, the on Shabbat. You need to preserve your life and the lives of others, lest you not enjoy another Shabbat.
August 26, 2011 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #802239popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou NY-ers are such babies. Your rocking chair shakes and you call it an earthquake. The wind blows faster than traffic on the van wyck and it’s a hurricane.
Lemme tell you something. Where I come from, even the cars can drive 70 MPH
August 26, 2011 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #802240mewhoParticipantmore than 70? omg , i will send the guys with the radar guns out after you
August 26, 2011 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #802241chayav inish livisumayParticipantall of you just relax!!!
We in the sourthern part of America went for two weeks without electricity after hurricane wilma. I think it would bwe good for all the brooklyners to experience some discomfort for the first time in their lives! it builds character!!!!!
but then again they’ll probably all pik up and fly to some exotic place so that your precious bodies domnt need to experience even one moment without your AC
