Its come to that point in time when i have to look into going to college to get a parnassa. I am really interested in being a crisis counselor or substance abuse counselor. any ideas where i would be able to find something in that field. if anyone knows of places that are hiring I do have experience and a resume. Thanx
August 11, 2011 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm #1043392mikehall12382MemberIf you already have experience, then why do you need to go to college? Sounds like you can by pass that step?
August 11, 2011 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #1043393A Heimishe MomParticipantExperience is great, but it won’t get you a job. You need a degree in Social Work. Bachelor’s would be psychology or related field, with an MS in Social Work. There are assorted accelerated frum programs to choose from.
August 11, 2011 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #1043394ebushMemberA Heimishe Mom , can you recommend any programs in particular???. i really would like to work within the frum community is possible. And yes expwrience is great but so far hasnt helped me much. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

I applaud your maturity.
I wish you hatzlocha with your career plans.
Hashem Yaazor means those who are willing to help themselves.

Call me an extremist, but somehow I think Hashem will also help those who give up helping themselves for learning Hashem’s Torah.
August 12, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #1043397ebushMembermw13, people who really learn bec its what they feel is right Hashem will help them but if you are just sitting and learning because everyone else is then who are you kidding. I B”H have been able to sit and learn for $ years without worry however i do have my obligations which I took upon myself under the chuppa. So its time to face the music and I have no doubt that Hashem will help me on this path as well.
August 12, 2011 3:28 pm at 3:28 pm #1043398ObaminatorMemberThere’s nothing wrong to sit and learn because everyone else is, there’s nothing wrong to work because everyone else it, and there’s nothing wrong to eat excersize because everyone else is.
All of those are the right thing to do — especially sitting and learning. So whatever the reason he is learning, it is good.
August 12, 2011 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #1043399EzratHashemMemberSomething to think about (from a former substance abuse counselor) if you can do substance abuse with the frum olam, it will be one thing, but if you are forced to work with the public at large, your clients will likely be people you would never want to come in contact with.

I can usually translate the most awful gibberish into English. Not this time. Please explain.
August 14, 2011 2:26 am at 2:26 am #1043401ObaminatorMember“it” is a typo that should have read “is”. “eat” was a typo that I intended to delete before submitting. “excersize” is a misspelling that you surely understood the meaning of. Replace the commas with semicolons if that makes it easier to read. And note that it is a reply to the comment immediately preceding it, namely the posters point about “because everyone else is”.
August 14, 2011 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #1043402kylbdnrMemberMy friend went to an accelerated program for social work. She did her bachelor’s in a year and then did her master’s in I think 2 years. Accelerated programs are very pricy though. She did it through Reb. Bulka’s program in Flatbush. Do you have any college credits?

Thank you. Now I understand. Following is your original, with translation into English. Please note the correct forms of verbs and the correct punctuation.
There’s nothing wrong to sit and learn because everyone else is, there’s nothing wrong to work because everyone else it, and there’s nothing wrong to eat excersize because everyone else is.
There’s nothing wrong with sitting and learning “because everyone else is.” There’s nothing wrong with working “because everyone else is.” And there’s nothing wrong with exercising “because everyone else is.”
August 14, 2011 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #1043404ToiParticipantHaifa girl; you’re unfortunately not all that proficient at punctuation. If you really enjoy it and want to learn how to punctuate correctly I would suggest the book ‘Eats, Shoots, and Leaves’. It may help you hone your skills.

Please point out my mistakes. I’m always happy to learn. And by the way, I use the American standard of punctuation (period inside the quotation mark), not the British version. I suggest you reread the book as she does mention American standards differ from those in the U.K.
And what’s with the semicolon after my name?

According to that logic, one really does not need to give Tzedaka or feel bad for Kollel people because as you pointed out “Hashem will help them”. Unless I am g-d, the achroyos is not mine. Sure, it’s nice, etc, but now I can sleep at night knowing that the responsibility of paying rabbayim is not mine.

Ohel can help with punctuation or grammar?
August 15, 2011 3:07 am at 3:07 am #1043409mamashtakahMemberIf you are serious about a job, look into going to college. When you apply for jobs, you usually submit a resume and/or fill out an application. You want your resume/application to stand out from the crowd; you want it to put you ahead of the pack.
With the way the economy is now, there are many more people looking for jobs than there are jobs available. Since the people hiring now have the upper hand and can pick the very cream of the crop, why would they select someone without a degree for a counselor position when they will most likely have many applicants with degrees? In this case, not having a degree puts you behind the pack.
kylbdnr, was that accelerated degree program accredited by the state or some college accreditation board?

Are you serious? We say Hashem will help the poor – does this mean that we never give any tzeddakah?! According to your logic, we should never have to help anybody – after all, doesn’t Hashem help everyone?
But obviously despite the fact that Hashem is indeed the One who is truly helping everybody, He wants us to help others too.

August 17, 2011 3:42 am at 3:42 am #1043412kylbdnrMembermamashtakah – My friend did through Adelphi University. Reb. Bulka made her seminary be another branch of the college and it’s all frum bais yaackov type of girls. It’s seminary and you get your BA in a year. She has a program for O.T, Speech, and Social Work

September 7, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am #1043415MDGParticipantebush,
How much will your desired professions pay? My understanding is the MSW degrees often don’t lead to high paying jobs.
September 7, 2011 4:42 am at 4:42 am #1043416Sam2ParticipantHaifagirl: The period only comes inside the quotation marks when the entire or main body of the sentence is a quote. In his case, where he put a book title in quotes (the proper thing would have been to italicize but maybe he didn’t know how to do that on this forum-I certainly don’t), he properly ended with the period outside the quotation marks. I hope this helps. 🙂
