The man was driving a silver 4-door sedan. His description is described as a white male in his 60?s, grayish-whitish frizzy hair, and was wearing a baseball cap. from YWN.
My question is
Why was an 11yo kid sent out at night in the dark,
to throw out the garbage?

August 11, 2011 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #797325HaLeiViParticipantNow let’s hear the other side of the story from YWN.
August 11, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #797326asyyegerParticipantForgive me, but I think some people going a little bit too far. It’s one thing to say that your 11 y.o. child should not be roaming the streets of BP/Flatbusg/Lakewood/Monsey (pick your community) at night, but it’s another thing entirely to question why an 11 y.o. was going to throw out the garbage at night in a bungalow colony.
Last night I sent my 12 yo out to put the garbage in the can on the driveway (in Rockland). It was 9pm. Was that wrong?
Yes, we have to protect and educate out children, but we cannot turn them into crazed neurotics, afraid of their own shadows. The way I explain it to my kids is as follows: most people in the world are good, the problem is that we don’t know who the few crazy ones are. Therefore, we are very aware of stranger danger (we frequently discuss what to be careful of and what to do in a given situation).
We need to give our children the tools to cope with life, not completely insulate them from everything only to throw them to the streets (figuratively speaking) to fend for themselves when they’re older and stil completely clueless.
August 11, 2011 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #797327bombmaniacParticipant…is asking a kid questions akin to abduction? really?!
August 11, 2011 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #797328smileyface136MemberI’m with bomb here. Sounded to me like an innocent older guy trying to find his way around the bungalow colonies. It’s not like they are all on the map and often GPS doesn’t even work up in the country. How else do we find our way around, but to ask?
August 11, 2011 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #797329a maminParticipantThe same guy was found in Monroe trying to talk to another boy on the street in front of his house! So now what don’t let the kids play outside in front of your own house??
August 11, 2011 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #797330nishtdayngesheftParticipantIt says the boy was made uneasy by the questions. Why do you doubt what he says? Apparently, based on what was said to him an alert was sent out. Why are you assuming it was direction type questions?
Is there something wrong with telling people to be alert? If it is nothing, no one will be harmed. If it is something, now you have been made aware and you can take appropriate action. It does not preclude you from sending your child to take out the garbage, but it should tell you to inform your child to be wary.
You have to make up yotr mind, should we deny that there can be ddangers or should we educate children? It seems thatthose who are the taking issue with the alert are the very same who say that Frum people bury what can happen abd do not appropriately educate the children. Why is that? It is like they have split personalities.
August 11, 2011 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #797331bombmaniacParticipantthe same guy was found…what is this following a guy around because he asked a kid a question? what did he ask anyway?
August 11, 2011 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #797332anonymisssParticipantLike the guy who asked me for directions and then asked me if I can come along to show him how to get there. Very innocent. <rolls eyes> I RAAAAANNNN for my life!!!
All I can say is <b>BEWARE</b>!!!
August 11, 2011 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm #797333Sister BearMemberWhen I was younger, there were many instances were kids were being followed by people in cars, and they tried to kidnap kids. It was a big issue, the police came and spoke to us….they never said we shouldn’t play outside and IIRC I don’t remember not being able to play outside, instead they taught us life essentials, like don’t talk to strangers and if someone in a car asks you questions, run those types of things.
That is way more effective and a better way to deal with these types of things, than locking everyone in their house.
August 11, 2011 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #797334ZeesKiteParticipantSister Bear:
That’s funny (actually not that funny). I was in Monticello on Friday, I was almost abducted by a ‘Sister Bear’ (ok maybe brother).
It was not more than 10 feet away. btw it (she) wast so cute!
August 11, 2011 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #797335bein_hasdorimParticipantFrom the way most of you are talking, you obviously don’t know how it is set up in many bungalow colonies.
It is definitely not the equivalent of sending your kid to take out the garbage from your home at night, where you can see
them from the window, and it’s not that far from the house.
There is decent lighting, other neighbors houses, and neighbors might be around.
The garbage in many bungalow colonies is out by the parking lot, usually close to the road. It is usually deserted, unless someone happens to pull in and park which takes under a minute, doesn’t hang around there, goes to his bungalow etc..
It is pitch dark, save the old lights that give you an outline of where you’re going, but it’s not a well lit area, to say the least.
I’m SURE if it C”V didn’t turn out well, the same posters would be crying foul. How irresponsible of the parents etc..
How soon do we forget the lessons we should’ve learned so very recently, at an exorbitant price that is immeasurable to us.
Please take your collective heads out of the sand and exercise caution with your children, anticipate these possibilities and take measures accordingly!
August 11, 2011 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #797336a maminParticipantBombmaniac: Normal people or well intending ones, do not ask children directions…..
August 11, 2011 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #797337aries2756ParticipantThe point of the story as I read it was this…
The 11 year old felt uncomfortable, wisely told his parents, who called the sherriff and went looking for this guy also warning people in the neighborhood. Kudos! Well done.
The parents taught the child well. The child was comfortable enough to discuss with his parents what happened and not ignore it, and the situation was handled appropriate. READ and LEARN.
August 11, 2011 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #797338ObaminatorMemberTalking to a child is not a crime. Even if they find this guy, there is nothing they can arrest or charge him with. And he doesn’t have to answer any questions under the law.
August 11, 2011 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm #797341HaLeiViParticipantaries, I thought the same.
ZeesKite, did it ask you weird questions?

I’ve had people asking me for directions (before MOD?? upgraded my age!)
August 12, 2011 12:01 am at 12:01 am #797343ZeesKiteParticipantHaLeiVi: What does snorting imply?
August 12, 2011 12:03 am at 12:03 am #797344Sister BearMemberSorry ZeesKite, I take no responsibility for people who share the same name as me. We ain’t related (or for haifagirl we aren’t related :))
btw it (she) wast so cute!
Are you implying something?
August 12, 2011 2:01 am at 2:01 am #797346StamperMemberaries: You may think its a crime to ask a child a question. But it isn’t a crime under the law.
August 12, 2011 2:36 am at 2:36 am #797347HaLeiViParticipantWell, if it would meow, I’d say it’s suspicious.
August 12, 2011 3:23 am at 3:23 am #797348oomisParticipantKids need to be taught that adults should not be asking them for help with directions. The man might have been legit or might not. he should have asked the boy to bring a grownup back, if he was lost. Obviously what he was saying made the child uncomfortable and suspicious.
August 12, 2011 5:32 am at 5:32 am #797350bezalelParticipantand was wearing a baseball cap. from YWN.
How do I get a YWN baseball cap?
August 12, 2011 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #797353HaLeiViParticipantAsk the kid.
August 14, 2011 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #797356real-briskerMemberI don’t see anything wrong with this story. The child was taught well how to deal with strangers, and therefore the parents entrusted him with taking out the garbage. It would be a different story if he wasn’t taught how to deal with strangers…
