So I was at Dunkin Donuts in Todd Plaza yesterday and the guy behind the counter tells me they’re going kosher on Wednesday. Anyone hear about this?
August 8, 2011 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #797668ItcheSrulikMemberWho supervises the Dunkin Donuts’ outside of Brooklyn? As far as I know, Rabbi Mehlman doesn’t visit all of them around the country.
August 8, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #797669HealthParticipantItcheSrulik – The only ones I eat in have a Hechsher. This includes Teaneck, Highland Park and Balto. And no it’s not R. Mehlman.
Edited for “You saying what” – These all have different Hashkochos. No reason to name the Rabbi in Balto.
August 8, 2011 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #797670HealthParticipantyitayningwut – Whose Hechsher -LKO -Tesser? If you see a sign -let us know.
August 8, 2011 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #797671yitayningwutParticipantBaltimore has a different rav who gives the hechsher on it, I forget his name.
In general DD is very easy to be machshir because they don’t make anything in the store, they get everything from the distributor (even the egg patties come ready made and refrigerated, they just microwave them). All you have to do is make sure that only the kosher items are in a particular DD’s inventory, keep the list updated, and you have a kosher DD.
August 8, 2011 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #797672zahavasdadParticipantThe one on Sunrise Highway in VAlley stream is under 5 towns Vaad
August 8, 2011 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #797673showerzingerMember@ItcheSrulik There are mashgichim OUTSIDE OF BROOKLYN! (GASP!) There are Kosher ones in Baltimore,Chicago, and the 5 Towns that I know of – why can’t Lakewood find someone to do it? They don’t have enough Jews for you?!?!
August 8, 2011 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #797674ItcheSrulikMemberRabbi Mehlman is the one who certifies the plant. He also certifies the stores in Brooklyn because he lives there. I was just curious about the other franchises. It’s a fairly simple question. Ok, so the five towns vaad does one. Who does the ones in Baltimore?
August 8, 2011 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #797675yitayningwutParticipantLakewood hasn’t done it for years because the KCL has a policy that they won’t give a hechsher on a place that serves chalav stam, and until now, to my knowledge, there isn’t a place in Lakewood that has a hechsher and serves chalav stam. That’s why this is quite an interesting development.

I don’t know, but I’ll definitely check Wednesday and report back here bl”n.
August 8, 2011 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #797677Feif UnParticipantIn Teaneck, it is supervised by the local Rabbonim, although I don’t believe they officially give the hechsher – I think they act as mashgichim for someone else. In Elizabeth, it is under R’ Teitz’s hechser.
August 8, 2011 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #797678winny1ParticipantItche, Rabbi Mehlman lives in Manhattan and he just like other people, has to make a living.

Actually is quite difficult to get DD to allow a franchise to become kosher. DD wants consistancy among their locations and becoming kosher messes with their menu.
August 8, 2011 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #797680yitayningwutParticipantBezalel-
I was talking from a kashrus point of view. Meaning that there aren’t many sheilos once you determine that they are only sending the kosher products to that specific DD. I don’t know their internal corporate politics and I am sure you are correct.
August 8, 2011 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #797681happiestMemberThe one in the 5towns on Rockaway Trpk is under the vaad of the 5towns.

That is correct. Once a location is given permission to become kosher, they follow the kosher protocals already setup at the corporate level.
August 9, 2011 1:37 am at 1:37 am #797684gregaaronMemberThe ones in Cedarhurst (Rockaway Tpke) and Valley Stream (Sunrise Highway) are both under the very reliable Va’ad of the 5 Towns, as other readers pointed out.
There is also a supposedly Kosher one in Monsey, on Route 59, but there are people who either will not eat there at all, or will eat the donuts (which are brought in from a kosher plant) but not the other baked goods.
August 9, 2011 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #797685mamashtakahMemberBaltimore is Rabbi Shalom Salfer.

August 9, 2011 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #797688ObaminatorMemberThey use Cholov Yisroel milk in your coffee if you ask them to, but I don’t know that their equipment is Cholov Yisroel anyways, since they also serve non-CY.
August 9, 2011 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #797689yitayningwutParticipantSo I did some research and no, it is not the LKO giving the hashgacha. I still don’t know who it is, hopefully I’ll find out later.
A Woman outside bklyn-
The donuts contain milk which I would assume is Chalav Stam. However, when I was in Baltimore I was told that Rav Ruderman held that Chalav Yisroel is not required for powdered milk, and therefore even those who normally do not eat Chalav Stam eat the donuts because apparently they are only made with powdered milk.
August 10, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am #797690HealthParticipantItcheSrulik -“Ok, so the five towns vaad does one. Who does the ones in Baltimore?”
“mamashtakah -Baltimore is Rabbi Shalom Salfer.”
Now that you were answered -Did it make any difference?
August 10, 2011 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #797691yitayningwutParticipantWalked in today and they told me it’s going kosher tomorrow. I asked them if they know the name of the rabbi who is certifying it, and they told me “Issacson.” Guess they mean the KOA? I assume there’ll be a sign up tomorrow so we’ll know for sure.
August 10, 2011 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm #797692ChallahbackMemberI guess it will not be the KCL- What has Lakewood turned into (dripping with sarcasm)????

Does that mean it’s Yoshan?
“Rav Ruderman held that Chalav Yisroel is not required for powdered milk.”
That’s no chidush. But are you sure that Rav Ruderman didn’t hold of Rav Moshe’s psak concerning milk in America?
August 10, 2011 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #797694bygirl93Membera woman outside bklyn-“Both DD locations in 5Towns serve Cholev Yisrael. That’s the easier part”
– actually by the one by the train- (the one not nxt to berrylicious) you have to ask for chalav yisroel otherwise they wont give you cholov yisroel- and i suggest that even if you are not makpid- still ask for it and show them its appriaciated (please excuse my bad spelling!) that way they realize the demand for it!

I try to be medakdek in my words. I wrote that he held that Chalav Yisroel is not required for powdered milk. No one, not the Chasam Sofer and not Rav Moshe, is going to say that Chalav Yisroel is not required for milk. Rav Moshe’s vort is simply that our “stam” milk satisfies the requirements of Chalav Yisroel. Rav Ruderman (and I have heard this b’shem Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank as well) held that powdered milk is mutar period. I did not intend for this thread to turn into another Chalav Stam thread, which is why I did not elaborate much. Just trying to keep people informed.
Health-
Thanks, I’m not that hungry though 🙂

He also gives the hechsher to the DD in Airmont (Monsey).
August 11, 2011 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #797698lkwdbumMemberspoke to KOA (R’ Issacson) he said that they are working on making it kosher, should be ready within a week. he said that everything but the donuts will be chalav yisrael. Are other chalav yisrael dds also like that(everything aside for donuts???)
August 11, 2011 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #797699yitayningwutParticipantlkwdbum-
The way DD works is that nothing is made (from scratch) in the store. Everything is made at the plant and distributed to all of the franchises. The only major difference between the kosher DD and the non kosher ones is the products they receive from the distributing center, i.e. they don’t send the non-kosher products to the kosher DD. They can buy themselves CY milk and cheese (I’d assume they have to get permission from the company to do that) to add to the pareve products to cater to those who do not wish to eat their cheese and milk, but the products that already contain milk can’t be changed. Therefore anything that comes ready-made and contains milk, as are the donuts, will contain Chalav Stam.

yitayningwut, I too try to be medakdek in my words and because you inserted “apparently” in your post rather than a difinitive statement, I assumed you were not positive about the powdered milk. And it seems from following posts (including your own) that the donuts might not be made from powdered milk.
August 11, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #797702yitayningwutParticipantcherrybim-
Clearly I’ve been causing some confusion; I’ll try to be clear this time.
Rav Ruderman held that non-Jewish powdered milk is mutar gamur, Rav Moshe’s (and others’) vort about US milk notwithstanding.
I have never checked into whether the donuts are made with regular milk or powdered milk (to me it makes no difference), it’s just that I heard this psak of Rav Ruderman as an explanation to why people who are machmir on Rav Moshe still eat donuts from the DD in Baltimore, hence – apparently – they are made with powdered milk.
I do know that just as there are those who are machmir on US milk, there are those who are machmir on powdered milk as well.
I assumed lkwdbum or anyone else had read my previous post and therefore knew that I was only calling the donuts “Chalav Stam” according to those machmirim.
I apologize for not being clear before. I hope this is.
August 11, 2011 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #797703bygirl93Memberjust letting everyone know that contrary to what was stated here previously the dd in th 5towns (cedarhurst/ rkwy tpk)is NOT all cholov yisroel! i was just there today and there was a sign nxt to the menu- saying that the baked goods r NOT cholov yisroel- and neither is the half and half milk- only the skim and regular are cholov yisroel!
August 12, 2011 12:04 am at 12:04 am #797704HachamMemberSo what’s the point? The equipment the CY milk goes through isn’t Cholov Yisroel anyways.
August 12, 2011 12:50 pm at 12:50 pm #797705cherrybimParticipantSo you can have a heimish CY coffee with your sofek powdered milk donut. But the milk is the least of your kashrus worries at a Dunkin Donuts store.
August 12, 2011 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm #797706bezalelParticipantand neither is the half and half milk- only the skim and regular are cholov yisroel!
As far as I know there are no producers of CY half and half serving the east coast.
spoke to KOA (R’ Issacson) he said that they are working on making it kosher, should be ready within a week. he said that everything but the donuts will be chalav yisrael.
That would require either that DD is allowing Lakewood to drop half and half from their offerings or that they are managing to get CY half and half.

But the milk is the least of your kashrus worries at a Dunkin Donuts store.
Exactly what else is there to worry about?
August 14, 2011 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #797708blessParticipantI don’t buy from places that are open on Shabbos. No knowing what the workers are doing under no supervision.
August 14, 2011 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #797710cherrybimParticipantThe Yotzei v’nichnas heter, especially at a food establishment establishment which is run by goyim, is infinitely weaker than Rav Moshe’s shita concerning American milk. Do you remember the recent Boro Park hot dog caper, and that was with a top hashgacha and a camera pointed at the working area.
August 15, 2011 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm #797712cherrybimParticipant“There is nothing not kosher sent to the kosher DD stores and when they run out of anything they absolutely may not go ahead and restock on their own. Besides, what exactly could they do? Buy non kosher bagels and pass them off as DD bagels? Everything you buy in DD has a distinct look and taste”.
Then why have any hashgacha at all, after all,”everything you buy in DD has a distinct look and taste”? That does not hold water both halachikly and in practice, as evidenced in other mishaps.
August 15, 2011 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #797714blessParticipantAnything can happen in a store owned by a non-jew. For example, they can bring their ham lunch and eat it on their counters and use the same utensils for their lunch as your food! They don’t see what’s wrong with it after all they don’t agree with your religion anyway! Also, there are always stories of cleaning woman that treif other people’s kitchen when owners aren’t looking. A goy is not trustworthy as a general rule when it comes to kashrus. There may be heterim for such an establishment, but I am in awe at how people are desperate for DD when there are other better hechsher establishments out there. BTW, I eat OUD and still won’t eat in DD. The hechesher generally creates a fear that they can be inspected anytime for kashrus compliance. Everyone knows we don’t come around on Shabbos and inspect unless some Kashrus org. do in which I am not aware of.
August 15, 2011 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #797716cherrybimParticipant“I do eat in DD stores that don’t have a hashgacha!”
So according to you, one may eat in any DD store without hashgacha.
Great, so let’s believe the goyish baker that his bread is kosher, after all it looks kosher.
And let’s believe the goy at the movie theater that his popcorn is kosher, after all, what tarfus can you put in popcorn?
And let’s believe the goy that he doesn’t use the microwave at DD to heat up his lunch or that he doesn’t cut his ham sandwich with a DD knife because, after all, the goy is a nice guy and he wouldn’t lie ’cause he might lose his minimum wage dishwasher salary.
