There are individuals ringing bells and giving packages titled “Israel Restoration”. How do we combat them? I personally did not take the package.
They were on E 7 bet K & L around 9:40 this morning (Tuesday, August 2).
Some missionaries came to my door last week during my Shabbos meal. I answered the door, and saw two women standing there. I asked if I could help them, and they said they wanted to talk with me. They asked me, “Do you believe there will be a time when all our stress will be gone, and the world will be a much, much, better place?”
I said, “Yes, but that’s where our common ground ends. We have very different beliefs about how we’ll get to that point, and I really don’t have much interest in discussing it with you. Have a great day!”
I was out walking my dog a couple of nights ago and a huge van passed me with a the words “Jews for J” all over it…they have infested my neighbourhood as well…

About a month ago, they dropped off white envelopes by everyone’s house so I went out collecting them from everyone and threw them out.

I doubt anyone falls for this drivel.
They target Russian Jews quite often, also. When people come around to my house (usually the Adventists or Witnesses), I tell them they are wasting their time on my block and in this neighborhood, especially where they see the small slanted boxes on the door posts, and very graciously bid them a good day. One persistent woman yelled to me, ” But I just want you to know the Truth!” To which I replied, “My people received the Truth long before yours came into existence, and we are quite happy with the original, thank you.”

That may be (one of) the best ways to counter them. They are professional arguers and have a bunch of lines ready, and most of us are not prepared. It might prove futile to argue with them.
These people are extremely well prepared and have excellent scripts which allows them to argue each point that you might make. Your best bet is to not speak to them at all. And, even though they are well rehearsed, Jews for Judaism can outtalk them any day – and they tell the truth. If they are targeting Russian Jews in your neighborhood, someone should take the time to notify Jews for Judaism, just in case they aren’t aware that they are in your particular area.
I guess this is what we get for not doing enough Kiruv outreach.
They dropped off the same envelopes by my house again today and when I went around collecting it, only 1 other neighbor had it on their step…it was weird. I wonder if the others took it home already.

ANYTHING these folks put out, SHOULD be thrown out. All of it. Dont take my word for it, ask your Rav.
They offer money to people. That’s how they trap them. I know 2 families who have become entrapped in their claws because they pay them.
If a missionary comes to the door, do not accept any of their materials, even if you think it would get them to go away faster, and even if you intend to throw it out right away. No matter how “resistant” you appear to their proselytizing, the missionary will mark your address down for a “follow-up” visit if you accept their materials.
A missionary once approached me on the subway and said “you are the lamb of G-d” (southern accent). My sister told me I should’ve replied “baaaa”!
Seriously, I’ve seen them handing out materials near caesar’s Bay (promenade) to the Russians. It angers me so much, but I don’t know what to do about it.
they were leaving them in front of the doors in my neighborhood as well. I wonder if we can get them fined for the “leaving unwanted flyers law”. Can anyone can let Mr. David Greenfield know about these totally unsolicited pieces of garbage and complain about this??
You don’t have to worry. It’s not sheimos. It’s tarfus.
Actually another way to prevent them from spreading their word is to engage them in a very lengthy conversation (if you can stomach it). This keeps them from finishing their routes and they think they have “hooked” somebody.
i learned something from a lubavitsher girl. i was standing with her father and her by a busstop and suddendly one of these missionaries came over and started talkin to us and wanted to give out material and the lubavitsher girl took it. i was surprised and asked why did she so she said so that one less can be handed out and find its way to a jew…i was impressed.
oomis: There’s a serious machlokes about that. Both my rebbeim told me it’s not a problem but others disagree.
Today I saw a missionary in the train station with a cardboard sign and a large black velvet yarmulka. When he got into my car he saw a couple of Jews in the car and moved to the next one. He happened to get off and set up shop at the same stop I had to change at so I asked him nicely to please take his yarmulka off so people won’t think he’s Jewish.

They WANT people to think they are Jewish. They are twisted evil people who believe that its a Mitzvah to make Jews into Christians.
We all need comebacks like Rabbi Mechanic has for these people.
Funny story that happened to a friend’s grandmother….they wouldn’t leave even after she closed the door and they sat on her lawn so she turned on the sprinkler system. Boy did that get them away fast 🙂

The best way to combat them is to reach out to Russian Jews (or whatever group of ignorant jews they are targeting) first, and teach them about yiddishket.
Ok, so those white envelopes appeared on our doorsteps (building) today, ironically. I was very nervous, but I collected them from my neighbors. They only left it at the doorsteps of those with mezuzos, frum or not frum. If I had the guts, and didn’t think I’d get in trouble, I’d go through my whole building.
Did I cross the line?? I saw my neighbor (an irreligious high school girl) and told her that if she also got the “package” to get rid of it, since it’s from missionaries. She kind of paused when I told her to toss it. Is it going to far to actually tell someone what to do with their mail??

In my opinion – yes. It is for her parents to tell her what to do, but you could have spoken to the parents and her together, to explain what this was. You were well-intentioned, though, and I applaud your heart for being in the right place.
WIY: I know, but if you say it loudly, at least the people walking by will know better.
