Would building up a strapless dress work or does it look obvious? Gemachs scare me, i have one too many horror stories about people getting the gown with stains and holes…besides I want a Vera Wang, how do I build it up without making it obvious that it was once sleeveless?
August 2, 2011 5:07 am at 5:07 am #796600TheGoqParticipantyeah saying womens only is gonna make guys want to read the thread less sure c.
August 2, 2011 5:20 am at 5:20 am #796601kapustaParticipantEven if it does have a “built up” look, that doesn’t make it an ugly gown. A lot also depends on the gown itself and how its done.
Good luck!
August 2, 2011 5:25 am at 5:25 am #796602giggle girlParticipanti heard you could tell and it doesn’t look so nice. better get one even with straps and put sleeves on.
August 2, 2011 5:29 am at 5:29 am #796603popa_bar_abbaParticipantJust wear a sweater over it.
August 2, 2011 5:31 am at 5:31 am #796604cvParticipantAsk mod. for my e-mail
August 2, 2011 5:31 am at 5:31 am #796605cofeefanMembermy friend wore a shell under a jumper type gown and looked stunning! i guess it depends on the dress and the girl.
August 2, 2011 5:42 am at 5:42 am #796606bezalelParticipantHave you tried contacting Ms. Wang?
August 2, 2011 9:20 am at 9:20 am #796607ummMemberI’ve seen gowns like that and they never look/lie right. I would reccomend just adding straps (looks much less added) and wearing a shell underneath.
August 2, 2011 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #796608oomisParticipantWhy Vera Wang – are there no other beautiful wedding gowns? I would go to a relatively inexpensive bridal place like David’s bridal, buy TWO of the same gown and use the material from the second one to fix the one I would be wearing.
August 2, 2011 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #796609bptParticipantGo to Klienfeld and get one custom made. You deserve it.
August 2, 2011 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #796610always hereParticipanteww.. a shell under a wedding gown?!?! sorry, but so not my taste! I don’t like that look even with any gown.
there are rentals (bridal direct) that have beautiful, tznius gowns.
g’luck & Mazel Tov again! 🙂
August 2, 2011 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #796611tzippiMemberMen, get out of here. You’re not being helpful. (Bpt, can’t wait till your daughter tells you she deserves xyz.)
Shells: for mother of the bride, ok. For bride, no.
Gemachs: so don’t go for the gown with the holes. What’s the problem? Now, if this is one of those gemachs that charges an arm and a leg then yeah, see if you can get a less expensive sample or whatever if you’d like.
Is this gown final sale? Can you take it to a seamstress or is there a seamstress on staff to consult with? I saw a stunning gown last year that started off as a strapless dress, had straps put on for security, and it came with a jacket over it. Very beautiful, real fifties type elegance. (You could see Audrey Hepburn in it easily.)
August 2, 2011 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #796612smartcookieMemberWhy don’t you rent something from an upper class rental place? Much simpler and they have gorgeous stuff.
I never heard anyone getting a gown from them torn or stained.
So when you planning the wedding for?
August 2, 2011 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #796613popa_bar_abbaParticipantI have a different question.
Won’t building up the strapless dress kill the dress even if you can’t tell it used to be strapless?
It isn’t going to look the same but just be tnzius. It is going to be a totally different dress. So what makes you think a dress which looks good in strapless will look good in high neck and long sleeves.
August 2, 2011 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #796614EnglishmanMemberWhy all this spilled yiddishe gelt on wedding gowns that you wear one night? It is such a chaval. There are more important things.
August 2, 2011 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #796616tzippiMemberYou know ladies, there are other places than the coffee room. This is just not going to work out and why I only check in intermittently these days.
to Englishman: if you’re not married yet, give your kallah a wrapped copy of a book by Robert Munsch called The Paperback Princess. Trust me, you don’t have to read it. Tell your kallah if she draws inspiration for her wedding gown from there, kol hakavod.
to PBA: good point. But this will not be the first time in the history of mankind or womankind this has been done. Seamstresses, especially who work with frum kallahs, are very creative and experienced.
smartcookie: I hear you. B”H my city’s blessed with not just a beautiful gemach but one that works at gemach prices. Any kallah who has to spend near 1K on a wedding gown needs to exhaust all other options first.
Yeah, it is for just one night. But yeah, she should also be a princess. There’s a way to do it within reason.
August 2, 2011 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #796617cshapiroMemberthe only reason i said woman only was because i used the word ***gasp*** strapless and i didnt know if that may be considered preetzus by the mods.
thanks bpt…
vera wang actually has a nice collection at davids bridal…why spend $1000 on a rental when you can buy one for that amount, then i can give it to my sisters or donate it to a gemach…
a shell under a gown…ummm not so classy im thinking it would look kinda cheap dont u think?
August 2, 2011 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm #796618MichaelCMemberthe Talmud says do not build in a new wall into a old wall-same with a dress, best idea is take it to a professional seamstress.
August 2, 2011 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm #796619aries2756ParticipantKallah, you don’t take a chance on your wedding gown. The first thing I would do, depending on your budget, is go to Kleinfeld’s since they do have a Frum department and say which designers they have already worked with to make kosher gowns. You won’t find anything in the $1,000 range, but it will cost you way more to start building up a $1,000 dress anyway. The other suggestion is to go to Jewish bridal stores like Pessy Blum or Bridal Secrets or others who will rent you a magnificent gown and it will be perfection on you. You only get married once (I”YH) make it the most memorable day of your life and don’t do anything you will regret. Try to pick a reasonable budget. And I mean reasonable. $1,000 is not reasonable for a rental gown. And dressmakers charge money as well and it will never look like a gown that was supposed to have a neckline and sleeves.
August 2, 2011 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #796620klachMemberWomen are a different species alright. . .
August 2, 2011 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm #796621a maminParticipantBridal Couture is an excellent rental on New Utrecht Ave. in Boro Park. Extremely nice to deal with.
Mazel tov!!
August 2, 2011 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm #796622No One SpecialMemberIf you wanna go to Monsey I found there nice rental also pretty cheap for custom made, Bridal Fantasies, about 2 years ago, but probably still good. I found new, looked like custom made for 800 dollars only. custom starts I think 1500 or maybe less. Think owner’s name is Oster. good luck whatever you do.
August 2, 2011 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #796623minyan galMemberThere is a TV series about Kleinfelds. They have a frum saleslady on staff and she knows which of the dresses can be altered to be appropriate. She can also add long sleeved lace bolero jackets to a lot of the dresses and they look wonderful. You should go there and see what they have. Even if you don’t buy from them, you will get a lot of good ideas that may be able to be adapted to less costly dresses from other stores. You must phone ahead for an appointment.
August 2, 2011 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #796624KateMemberFirstly mazel tov with much hatzlacha and happiness.
I second bpt,
A friend of mine had Esti’s in Flatbush bring in a Vera Wang gown,(that she had seen at Bergdorf’s) and do the alterations. Nobody would dream that it was built up.
August 2, 2011 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #796625aries2756ParticipantMinyan gal, I know you didn’t realize this, but that is actually not permitted. If you know that you are NOT going to buy from a particular store it is “assur” to waste the time of the sales people, basically using them, when their time could be better spent with a paying customer. In Kleinfeld’s in particular, the consultant’s are paid commission. So if you make an appointment and use that consultant’s time you are taking away from her parnasah.
August 2, 2011 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #796626mustangriderMembera friend of mine bought a vera wang strapless gown and built it up. it came out gorgeous!!!!! no one knew it was built up. but i guess it also has to do with the syle of the dress (when its beaded it may be harder to fix…) and the dressmaker u use. good luck!
ps i hav yet to see a kalah that isnt pretty on her wedding day!
August 2, 2011 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #796627cshapiroMembermustangrider, how did she cover up the seem where the original dress and the fabric meet? do you put lace over it? davids bridal has an afordable vera wang collection, so why not buy a dress which iyh my sisters will use after me…
August 2, 2011 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #796628mustangriderMembercshapiro, its funny cuz her vera wang was also from davids bridal! lol! but as to how the seem of the original dress was hidden – im not sure, the dressmaker did a really good job! there was no lace on the top of the dress… the bodice had a lot of folded and bunched up fabric so the dressmaker sort of continued the existing design blending the original dress with the added piece… i’m sorry thats the best way that i can describe it…
I hope this helps! 🙂 btw mazel tov! and besha’ah tovah!
August 2, 2011 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #796629ummMemberSorry, i didn’t realize this was a gown for your wedding!!! Firstly Mazel Tov, I didn’t read anywhere here that you’re engaged (Though seen plenty oon dating from you!) If you’re the Kallah, definitely DONT wear a shell!!! I thought for a sister or friend.
You may be saving money, but you’re also taking a risk that it won’t work out, that would be a waste of money too. Whatever you choose to go with good luck! and mazel tov again, enjoy!
August 2, 2011 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #796630bptParticipantWhoa, what an eye-opener. All this $$$ and effort for a gown you wear once?
The suit the chosson will wear will likely cost under $400, and he will wear it another 50 times.
Kinda makes you wonder….
Then again, women apply makeup before going to the gym, so I guess it does make sense
August 2, 2011 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #796631minyan galMemberaries: I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression. I did say “even if you don’t buy there”, meaning that she may find something in her price range. They have monthly sales and a ton of sales racks. I meant that if she didn’t find anything appropriate or in her price range. Lots of people try dresses in shops and don’t buy but don’t go into the store without the intention of buying – just that there may not be anything suitable.
August 2, 2011 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #796632aries2756ParticipantI called Kleinfeld about the “Kosher” gowns. Those don’t go on sale.
August 2, 2011 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #796633cofeefanMember“a shell under a gown…ummm not so classy im thinking it would look kinda cheap dont u think? ”
thats what i thought too when i firt heard what hse was doing….but itactually looked really nice!! i guess it was the gown she had…
August 2, 2011 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #796634mustangriderMemberalso if u want to alter a gown, (and ur doin it by an extremely proffesional dressmaker) keep in mind that alterations may cost u almost as much as the gown itself…
August 2, 2011 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #796635smartcookieMemberThousand? My gown cost about $1400 to rent SIX years ago, and that was not considered an expensive gown.
I think it pays. They do alteration for you and take the whole headache off your head. Plus you get a beautiful, well fitted gown and ship it right back after the wedding.
Cshapiro- are you’re sisters really gonna wear your gown IYH or are you just telling it to yourself so you can buy one?
I wouldn’t want to wear my sister’s. I would like my own taste on my wedding day!
August 2, 2011 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #796636LuVmyFaMMemberhey first mazal tov and wish you lots of luck …..i actualy bought my dress from kleinfelds and built upo the top realy nicely ……u just have to make sure u get a good fabric on top i would love to help u out if u send me piks i wud love to give u some ideas ……good luk 😀
August 2, 2011 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #796637Boro Park GirlMemberIf the top is simple, it might make sense to just keep the fancy bottom and build a whole new top.
P.S. As with all gowns, make sure to have your seamstress add another batch of stitches on all seams to make sure your gown doesn’t open during dancing.
August 3, 2011 12:21 am at 12:21 am #796638the.nurseMemberfor my wedding this past Jan., I used a woman who designs your dress for you as you want it. the cost for my entire dress plus fittings was about $400. she gives you endless time. i know other people who have used her. my dress came out beautiful. she’s located in NJ (about a 1/2 from monsey). if you’re interested, let me know & i can post the info.
August 3, 2011 1:06 am at 1:06 am #796639Boro Park GirlMemberNurse-Please post the info. cuz I need a dress for a upcoming wedding and I can’t seem to find one and she sounds very very reasonable.
August 3, 2011 1:15 am at 1:15 am #796640smileyface136MemberI bought a dress at David’s Bridal. I had it built up a few inches in the front, and then wore a Bolero Jacket from there in a contrasting color. Looked very nice and got lots of compliments.
August 3, 2011 1:18 am at 1:18 am #796641cshapiroMemberi have a friend who is a dressmaker/seamstress who i would go to and thats why i dont mind spending the money if its going to a friend anyways. i would make a dress from scratch but my friend said i think its easier to build up although iyh i am going to her on thursday to shorten my vort dress so i can ask her for an honest opinion about that 🙂
August 9, 2011 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #796642the.nurseMembersorry, BPGirl, I wasn’t following the thread… her name is Valda, her website is gownsbyvalda.com. (Don’t go by what you see on her site cuz she can custom make any gown for you). I think most of her clients are frum, so she’s very aware of our guidelines. She’s really easy to work with……. good luck and mazel tov!
August 9, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #796643aries2756Participantcshapiro, I just saw an ad by a Frum wedding shop and I looked carefully how she covers the strapless dresses. What she does is overlays the top till the waist then belts it with crystals bringing attention to the waist and away from the neckline. The top is the same fabric as the bottom, so it is more sheer like organza but still kosher and you still see the bodice of the gown, so you still have the strapless look showing through. So it is as if she made a blouse on top of the gown that has the neckline and sleeves but ends at the waistline out of the bottom fabric. Do you understand what I am describing? So if you can get two less expensive gowns at David’s Bridal or one and order more fabric that matches the bottom of the gown, that can be a solution.
August 9, 2011 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #796644bpmumParticipantshells not ok for brides i find a lot of built up gowns do look built up but tht dsnt mean not good some look horible together geshtickeld some look gr8 u gotta get someone good to do it ive seen vera wangs go stunning and some go bad so u need to go to someone good (esty)?
August 10, 2011 5:06 am at 5:06 am #796645haifagirlParticipantP.S. As with all gowns, make sure to have your seamstress add another batch of stitches on all seams to make sure your gown doesn’t open during dancing.
Boro Park Girl: I am so impressed. Your were the first one on this thread to spell “seam” correctly.
Good job!
August 10, 2011 7:27 am at 7:27 am #796646kapustaParticipantcshapiro, I don’t know about the bridal gowns, but the other dresses at DB need to be ordered which means you need like six weeks or so until they come in. If you decide on that route, do it ASAP.
For anyone reading: I’ve heard (more than once) that people who used the seamstresses at DB weren’t happy with the finished gown.
August 10, 2011 7:36 am at 7:36 am #796647aries2756ParticipantAlso no matter where you get the gown or who makes it, make sure you have at least 10 pre-threaded needles at your wedding and safety pins as well as a scissor just in case. That’s called insurance.
August 10, 2011 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #796648minyan galMemberaries: when my daughter got married, I had a small suitcase full of emergency gear. We had needles and thread, extra pantyhose for everyone in the wedding party, bandaids, hairspray, kleenex, tylenol and a few other things that I cannot remember. I started a list (weddings are made from books of lists) about a month before the wedding and just kept adding to it. Luckily, we needed nothing from the “emergency” pack, but it is much better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
