The “What does chassidish mean to you” thread got closed before I could ask Reb Ber a question about the Nadvorna dynasty, but it got me thinking. There are quite a few chasidim here in the CR and at least one non-chosid with a passing interest in the culture and history (me). Let’s make this thread a drop box for all interesting pieces of chassidish history and the like and keep it completely free of lashon hara and sectarian politics.
To start, I’ll post my reply to Reb Ber.
The Clevelander rebbe (Bnei Brak?) is this rebbe’s brother. Anyway, I thought it was Chernobyl where all the eyniklach got a rebbeschaft?
charlie: The entire extended Twersky family is practically the chassidic equivalent of the Habsburgs (lehavdil) so in a way, there still are chassidim on Mosholu parkway. 🙂

July 29, 2011 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm #792014Feif UnParticipantThree chassidim are sitting around a table on Motzei Shabbos telling over Rebbeshe ma’asos while eating their Melava Malka. The Rebbe walks by, and asks them what they’re doing. They respond, “It’s a minhag to tell over Rebbeshe ma’asos on Motzei Shabbos!”
The Rebbe replies, “Lav davka”, and walks away.
The first chassid says, “Lav davka on Motzei Shabbos – it should be all week!”
The second one says, “Lav davka Rebbeshe Ma’asos – we should say over all types of ma’asos!”
The third one says, “Lav davka it’s a minhag – it’s a chiyuv!”

The Tzemach Tzedek once heard the chasidim telling baal shemtov stories at melave malka because they thought it was good for parnossa. He said lav davka the baal shemtov, but any tzadik, and lav davka by melave malka, but any time, and lav davka a story — you can say a dvar torah too!
July 29, 2011 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #792016HaLeiViParticipantThe way I heard it, the last one was Lav Davka for Parnassa, but for anything.
July 29, 2011 6:33 pm at 6:33 pm #792017ItcheSrulikMemberNow that you remind me, you’re right, but lav davka the last one — I heard that one as the second. 🙂

The Mosholu dynasty moved to Boro Park, where they have a nice, growing Yeshiva, bli ayin hara.
