My aunt is negotiating with other relatives to make a sheva brachot for a young couple. The other party wants to hire a DJ and have it in a restaurant. They claim many families hire DJs for sheva brachot. Is this the new normal? or is having a DJ overly extravagant?

I knew the legal job market was bad. But I didn’t know they were working at sheva brachos.

Even if it is, maybe our duty is to stop the tide and go back to the “old normal” thats a more normal “normal”.

Ohev shalom v’rodef shalom!
After reading about all the older singles thread, focus on the fact that they found each other! (And tell the DJ to lower the volume.)

If they will take on the expense, let them be. I feel she is well within her rights as a hostess to demand that the DJ not say, play or do anything she deems inappropriate.
I’m not sure that’s its so “normal” to “negotiate” with the other relatives to make sheva brachos. What does it mean negotiate? He who comes up with the most outrageous and/or lavish idea, gets to host? What will make the chassan and kallah happy? If negotiations break down, will there be no sheva brachos that day (which is ok too)? Lastly, why is it more “normal” to make a sheva brachos in a restaurant than it is to have a DJ?

Yes. The quoted cost is quite expensive and having a DJ and fancy hall seems to be extravagant. My aunt often makes sheva brachos at her home and everyone leaves happy.

July 28, 2011 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm #790934agittayidParticipantThe issue seems to be resolved. They are going ahead with the DJ and fancy hall without my aunt.
