Some of the posters were questioning and i’ve had the same question.. How could Hashem do this to a little child???
i asked somebody this question and he gave me a personal example.. it really made an impact on me, if it does to anybody else, good, and if not – well that’s fine also 😉
He has a special older child. He pays her Boss $$ so that his daughter will feel that she has a proper job, thus, feeling like everybody else. Recently it became a problem and he had to tell his daughter that she would get the $$ is cash instead of directly to the bank. She was really hurt about this, accused him of dishonestly, of taking away her one confidence (being like everybody else) etc.
“Look!” He said to me, “I couldn’t explain to her anything! I just couldn’t tell her a thing, I watched her hurt and pain, felt it along with her but kept silent – had to keep silent.
And G-d is saying the same thing. There’s no way we can understand or try to understand without knowing the complete picture. And we never can know the complete picture. And G-d can’t tell it us for whatever reason.” …
Like i said – this was something that helped me so i thought i’d share it 😉

July 17, 2011 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #786810Another nameParticipantAries, that is a very pessimistic way of looking at the situation. Obviously people have bechirah, but we are all shelicihim Hashem. If Hashem had decreed such, then Leiby would be living today. We have to remember that we do not live in a perfect world where we can see the direct outcome of our actions. The most we can do is daven, do mitzvos, and strengthen our bitachon.
July 17, 2011 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm #786812popa_bar_abbaParticipantThis is incorrect.
Hashem did it. Everything that happens in the world is done by Hashem. Not allowed. Hashem controls every aspect of every thing that happens to us.
The fact that we act of free will is relevant only to ourselves, not to the people we impact. It is completely wrong to say that things happen because people decide to do them, or because Hashem allows them. That would mean that Hashem does not decide what will happen to us.
July 17, 2011 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm #786813yentingyentaParticipantPBA: to qoute my teacher “everything that H’ does is the absolute very best thing that can possibly happen due to the circumstance he put himself in by his own free choice” from this, it seems to be that H’ does what is best for us, based on the choices that we make with b’chira. does that shtim with your idea?

July 18, 2011 12:09 am at 12:09 am #786816popa_bar_abbaParticipantIndeed we are not arguing semantics.
Sure, from the murderer’s perspective, he had bechira, and could choose to kill or not.
But from the rest of our perspective, Leiby hy”d would have been murdered anyway, regardless of what the murderer chose. It could have been in an accident, it could have been by a different murderer.
But to say that if the murderer had not chosen to kill, the Leiby would be alive, is simply not true.

And BTW when i started the thread it was meant to share some thought on how to understand how Hashem could do this / let this happen if the question did bother you!
July 18, 2011 12:15 am at 12:15 am #786818DroidMemberWhen Moshiach comes we will all understand why the holocaust was the best thing that could happen to Klal Yisroel.
July 18, 2011 12:20 am at 12:20 am #786819talking stamMemberommis, it is not just semantics that you are arguing. complete emunah is believing that whatever happens, happened by the hand of Hashem. Levi Aron was the shaliach. He could have chosen to not be the shaliach, but this terrible tragedy would have happened nonetheless.
A separate questions is why Hashem did this, and what we are supposed to learn from it. Whatever that is, we better learn it well, and quickly!
July 18, 2011 12:29 am at 12:29 am #786820shosh shainMemberI think theres always the question if HaShem controlls et how do we have free choice? I remember in HS the question was how can evil ppl be punished if it was decree from H`? Obv is was decree that this innocent child pass but what aron did after that to me was something that was in his own free will, something extra that didnt need to be done.
like they said when we were in egypt pharaoh was suppose to make the labor hard but to take away the material to make the bricks was st extra, he did bc it brought him extra ennjoyment to see us suffer, thats where the line crosses between decree and free will. this is my opinion,
How could something so awful happen? It nothing we can ever fully understand. Et Hashem does is for the best. Lieby A”H was a korban we need to better our selves and let Hashem know we hear His message.
My husband came home from shul lastnight saying the rabbis speech was really something. Bringing down points where when we need to wake Hashem takes away the great Rabbis. didnt 3 great rabbis just pass? If we still dont wake Hashem then must wake us with having things happen to children! They say we can never understand why things happen it looks like the back of a needle point all bumpy and a mess. B”H when mashiach comes Hashem reveals why everything happened, thus turning around the needlepoint to uncover a beautiful picture.

Your understanding of what Yad Hashem means, and mine, may be different. Perhaps Leiby would have died by some other means had he not encountered Levi Aron. But the fact is he DID encounter him, and that encounter is what caused his death. Clearly Hashem made that decree for Leiby to die that day by the hand of that man in that way. Does it make ANY of us feel better to know that?
I think we should focus on ways to prevent this type of horror from occurring to another child chalilah. I am not arguing with anyone here. I just see this from a different perspective, one in which we learn from this tragedy how to be better people, and how to better protect our precious children.
July 18, 2011 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #786823mommamia22ParticipantMy husband and I have a fundamental disagreement in belief about hashgacha pratis. I believe that people, each individual has his/her own hashgacha (as sad as it is, that it isn’t coincidental that of all those blocks, the first one he chose to approach someone for help on, turned out to be the one with a mentally ill potential killer), whereas, my husband believes only nations and leaders merit to have this (that things just happen, without divine intervention). This only serves to anger him more, causing him to say “g-d has a lot of explaining to do”. Whereas, I, horrified, saddened and bewildered about this event, am left only to accept this as Hash-em’s will. I just can’t imagine that there was “tzimtzum” going on here . It would just seem too much like a parent abandoning a child.
July 18, 2011 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #786825haifagirlParticipantThere’s a wonderful shiur about this by Rabbi Avrohom M. Alter on torahmedia.com. It’s called “Comprehending the Incomprehensible.”
July 18, 2011 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #786826observanteenMemberPrincessEagle: Wow. What an amazing mashal. Thank you very much! I was beside myself after this terrible tragedy…thanks for the chizuk!
Aries and oomis: Your philosophy is flawed. This is not the Emuna we as Yidden should have. HASHEM RUNS THE WORLD. PERIOD. I don’t exactly have the koach nor do I have the time to discuss the basics of Emuna. But your view is certainly incorrect.
Poppa: Thank you.
To all of you who are still bothered by this: I listened to Rabbi Fischel Shechter shlita (on the chazak hotline 356-6665) regarding this issue. He explains everything with great clarity.
