Whats your take on Non-jews knowing too much or getting too chummy with Jews/Judaism?
Take for example; neighbores, work-mates, store owners, working in religeous enviroment, schools etc.
They start saying Jewish words, singing out songs, joining Jewish functions etc.
I remember in my High School ther was a Muslim worker who knew/knows a little too much about Judaism- tsnius, shabbos, y’t..and jokes about it as if hes part of K’Y!

June 17, 2011 2:13 am at 2:13 am #811441always runs with scissors fastParticipantOh my, I have a story. We once got this crazy goyter, and she was like trying to show me that she was able to be like us. She would talk yiddish words to the children, or question and initiate inquisitvely about our customs, recipes.
I got rid of her when she pushed the last button. She left a hand written note in my door one day that the Jewish Public Library holds “learn Yiddish” courses for beginners on wednesdays and if I want she can take my children there on the bus.. and bring them home safely too.
Well, considering we are a yiddish speaking family living amongst chassidim and that we really didn’t need her offer. That wasn’t why I got rid of her. IT WAS JUST WEIRD!!!!

June 17, 2011 2:28 am at 2:28 am #811443minyan galMemberOne of the caretakers at my shul (he has been there over 20 years) told me that after working there for only a week, he just had to find out what “oy vey” meant because he heard it constantly. Then he said that after he had been there a couple of months, he started saying it, if something went wrong and still uses the phrase to this day.
June 17, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #811444always runs with scissors fastParticipantI heard a very funny cheder story.
In williamsburg a caretaker from the Satmar cheyder asked some 10 or 12 yr old boys “How can I say in Yiddish GOOD MORNING to the rabbi?”
So the boys told him “Ich bin a putz”.
So the next day they are all sitting in class learning and the caretaker/janitor comes along with his mop in the hall, outside the classroom door and gives a big smile and waves to the Rebbe calling out “ICH BIN A PUTZ”
The rebbe knew the boys were behind this.

Think of some other nations or types of people who are different from us and we might think they are strange. But once we get to know some of them we start realizing that they aren’t so different and they can also be nice people.
That’s why i think its best for us not to get to know them so well so it shouldn’t lead to mingling.
(btw, I’m a guy and even i know about Ali)

June 17, 2011 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #811450bptParticipantThe troubling example I know of with this, is when goyish kitchen workers ( in halls, schools, hotels) tell the new “mashgiach / kitchen manager” oh, don’t worry about this or, its ok if I do that…the other rabbi paskined its ok”, or “its only d’rabannon, you don’t have to throw it out”.
And he say it with such conviction, the new hire believes it!

September 21, 2011 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #811453Raphael KaufmanMemberThere were many Gentiles would learned some Yiddish from working for, or around, Jews. a famous one is Colin Powell who, in his youth, was a Shabbos Goy in Washington Hights. Back in Der Heim (well the part for Der Heim my family comes from) there were many majority Jewish towns and even major cities. Both Minsk and Pinsk were majority Jewish (Pinsk was 70% Jewish). In such a milieu, Yiddish was the lingua franca and most of the non-Jews spoke it as well.
September 21, 2011 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #811454shmoelMemberMunkatch too was a major city, majority Orthodox Jewish.
