June 16, 2011 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #1022495YW Moderator-80MemberRabbi Avigdor Miller, tzl, who said it is very innapropriate to celebrate “thanksgiving” in any way, and every effort should be made, if possible, to have nothing to do with it,
also said that every frum Jew should publicly celebrate July 4. on his shul they would display a us flag.
June 16, 2011 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #1022496Pac-ManMemberMod, why do you type tzl rather than ztl?

June 16, 2011 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #1022504Pac-ManMemberI would think ztl is more accurate Mod, as it adheres to the Hebrew acronym. I’m not sure how you came to use your version.
June 16, 2011 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #1022505YW Moderator-80Memberim not sure how i came to use it either

June 16, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #1022507cantoresqMemberIf I remember, I put out my flag. We always have a barbecue. Nothing like good food, good beer and good friends to celebrate our freedom.
June 16, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #1022508bptParticipantThe same way I celebrate other legal holidays (that Mrs BP does not have off)
With GRATITUDE!

June 17, 2011 12:08 am at 12:08 am #1022510ItcheSrulikMemberI will follow all American customs. I will eat burnt meat and drink inferior beer. Then I will debate with my friends whether or not we should go to Manhattan for the fireworks (we always decide not to), eat more burnt meat, drink some less inferior beer, and go to maariv.
June 17, 2011 12:58 am at 12:58 am #1022511mewhoParticipanti celebrate every holiday that i am paid at work for and get the day off.
doesnt mean i celebrate it the way others do. but i sure do celebrate a free ”paid” day!
June 17, 2011 2:33 am at 2:33 am #1022512minyan galMemberI don’t celebrate July 4 because I am Canadian. However, I DO celebrate July 1, which is Canada Day. I will put a flag on apartment balcony. There will be fireworks at night, but I won’t be going to any because they all start after Shabbat begins. However, I can often see great fireworks displays from downtown from the balcony of my place, so I may sit on my balcony about 10 PM and see what I can see.

July 4, 2012 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #10225212scentsParticipantMoraRach,
Would you mind sharing what a BBQ and America being a great country have in common?
I also think that America is the greatest country, even greater is the fact that my grandparents were accepted and given a chance here in the USA.
However doing something that Goyim do is not something that I would prefer. We spend the day together playing and having fun (like each Sunday) we daven and learn as well. Use this day of rest to cut myself off from work and enjoy life.
July 5, 2012 12:56 am at 12:56 am #1022522MorahRachMemberThey don’t have anything to do with each other. But the weather is beautiful, we all have off, my husband works on Sundays so we can almost never BBQ all together, so my family and parents and in-laws get together, BBQ, catch up, talk politics etc. so it’s not really the BBQ, we are just getting together as an extended family, loving our country and being together.
July 5, 2012 2:24 am at 2:24 am #1022523Sam2Participant2scents: Once again, I think the point isn’t that the barbecue is L’kavod July 4th. July 4th is just a happy day to begin with to give Shevach V’hoda’ah LeHakadosh Baruch Hu for giving us a great place to live and follow the Torah relatively unhindered. Couple that with a hot summer day and no work and a barbecue is the natural conclusion.
I think this is a perfect example of the Goyim doing something logical. Are we supposed to be illogical because they do the logical thing. We don’t drive on the sidewalk and walk in the street, even though the Goyim do the exact opposite. We are not obligated to avoid doing everything they do (we walk and breathe and sleep just like they do). July 4th is just a logical day for a big barbecue. There’s nothing wrong with doing something logical.
July 5, 2012 3:07 am at 3:07 am #1022524No One Mourns The WickedMember“I watch the Mets lose”
Ugggh, I know 🙁
As an aside, Jew or not, we live in America and should celebrate our country’s freedom and tolerance.
God bless.
