I was watching a cooking competition show and one of the ingredients was Jews Mallow a spinach like green i have never heard of this and i don’t know why its called that, i googled it but i couldn’t find the source of the name does anyone know?
May 20, 2011 4:05 am at 4:05 am #977425ursula momishMemberOne source (Brittanica Online) lists it as a source of jute, so perhaps it’s a mispronunciation of “jute’s mallow.” Or maybe it was used also for its liquid, so it could be a misspelling of “juice mallow.”
Or, maybe it was commonly used by Jews in the area in which it grew and was thus associated by name.
May 20, 2011 4:52 am at 4:52 am #977426yankdownunderMemberGoq you could be referring to the Mallow Plant (I have heard of a high and low varieties of the Mallow Plant) which is an edible weed that grows in the garden. The name of the plant is Marsh Mallow. Marsh Mallow (The Plant) is good for colds, and aids digestion like Slipery Elm Bark. Long ago Marsh Mallow was used to make a treat like the White Sweet thing we call Marshmallows today (Certified Kosher) that people toast over the Grill.
May 20, 2011 4:58 am at 4:58 am #977427yankdownunderMemberGoq the Mallow Plant produces a kind of Fruit. The fruit was used (thousands of years ago in Europe) to make the treat we call Marshmallow.

May 20, 2011 10:22 am at 10:22 am #977429estherhamalkaMemberThis is a yummy soup! My family and I love it! My kids ask for it all the time! It’s a green leaf that gets purreed, and then frozen. You can buy it at any middle east grocery along kings highway or ave u or ave p in flat bush. All you do is boil chicken in a big pot full of water, and when it’s done,in a separate little frying pan you sautee crushed garlic with dried coriander in oil until it gets dark brown in color and when it does, you toss this mixture into the pot with the chicken and broth. Voila! You just made what’s called in Arabic as molochaya! It can be eaten with white rice or pieces of pita bread broken into bite size pieces and thrown into the bowl. You don’t put rice or bread in the pot,you serve yourself a bowl of molochaya and then you add the rice or bread to each serving. Yum!
