Here is the link to the newest CRC bulletin.
I have not had a chance to read it yet, but you may get some commentary later.

April 11, 2011 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #967108popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am still drinking brew coffee.
I am still drinking espresso.
I have to think about if I want to drink latte’s.
I am not buying meat sandwiches.
April 11, 2011 10:53 pm at 10:53 pm #967109chayav inish livisumayParticipantpopa its probably not wise for you to publicize that cuz ppl may come to follow ur opinion which probably has no halchik authority
April 11, 2011 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #967110popa_bar_abbaParticipantchayav: Read the article, they say that you can. (not the meat sandwiches.)
April 11, 2011 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #967111good.jewMemberWell, Popa actually is my Rabbi. I always follows his rulings
April 11, 2011 11:27 pm at 11:27 pm #967112popa_bar_abbaParticipantgood.jew:
My minhag regarding drinks on pesach is not a ruling, it is just my minhag.
April 11, 2011 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #967113chayav inish livisumayParticipantI have to think about if I want to drink latte’s.
IS that what the article says???
April 12, 2011 12:20 am at 12:20 am #967114StuffedCabbageParticipantdoes any one know if the cinnamon dolce latte is kosher?
April 12, 2011 12:24 am at 12:24 am #967115yogiboobooMemberi like the passionfruit iced tea lemoade
April 12, 2011 1:04 am at 1:04 am #967117popa_bar_abbaParticipantchayav:
Sorry, my earlier response was dashed off in a hurry.
The CRC’s paper goes through various problem with various products, and suggests reasons why they might be muttar anyway.
My earlier comment was what I personally intend to do.
I then commented that I am well within the range of what the CRC is saying is only a chumrah.
April 12, 2011 1:04 am at 1:04 am #967118shlishiMemberds: Not drinking coffee made from equipment washed together with utensils used for pork sandwiches isn’t a matter of being frummer.
April 12, 2011 1:30 am at 1:30 am #967119popa_bar_abbaParticipantds: Not drinking coffee made from equipment washed together with utensils used for pork sandwiches isn’t a matter of being frummer.
I think it is a bit more subtle than that.
Things are only assur if the halacha says they are. The fact that we have a visceral reaction is not so relevant.
April 12, 2011 1:40 am at 1:40 am #967120shlishiMemberThings are only assur if the halacha says they are.
Are you suggesting that the described scenario is not assur?
April 12, 2011 1:41 am at 1:41 am #967121double standardMembershlshi: You did not read the CRC’s comment, which clearly indicated that it is muttar.
April 12, 2011 1:51 am at 1:51 am #967122shlishiMemberds, From the cRc notice:
Due to the concerns outlined above, the Av Beis Din, Rav Schwartz shlita, ruled that in a full-service Starbucks one should not consume any item which uses equipment that may have been washed together with non-kosher utensils, but one may be lenient in a kiosk-type store where (as noted) heated non-kosher items are much less common.
As stated, one may be lenient in a kiosk-type store only. In a regular store, one cannot. And even in a kiosk type store, it is stating that “heated non-kosher items are much less common”. So even in a kiosk type store, some of them do utilize heated non-kosher items.
April 12, 2011 1:56 am at 1:56 am #967123popa_bar_abbaParticipantShlishi:
What are you doing?
Did you read the rest? Please read the rest, and do not ascribe positions to the CRC which they hold as chumros only.
April 12, 2011 1:58 am at 1:58 am #967124shlishiMemberpopa:
I quoted the cRc’s April 2011 Starbucks notice.
April 12, 2011 2:17 am at 2:17 am #967125popa_bar_abbaParticipantSo is that a “no, I did not read the rest of it”?
April 12, 2011 5:42 am at 5:42 am #967126jewish unityParticipantThere’s a whole explanation about the whys of all their rulings on their website which they say will also be published in the next edition of the Journal of Halacha in Contemporary Society (I don’t know how ppl here read that)
April 12, 2011 5:58 am at 5:58 am #967127shlishiMemberI read it, albeit quickly. If you feel there is a portion elsewhere that conflicts with the verbatim quote I earlier provided, please cite it.
April 12, 2011 11:35 am at 11:35 am #967128RSRHMemberI was pleasantly surprised by the cRc release. They explain the issues clearly and concisely; they make clear that there are many bases upon which to be lenient, even according to their stricter shitta; and they state their official chumra position in a text box offset from the rest of the piece so that readers can distinguish what cRc holds as an institution from what they agree is the actual halachic standard.
The piece is obviously coming from a place where the cRc wants to be more machmir on this issue (which is fine), and there are other poskim that are more lenient than the mekil cRc views. Nevertheless, kol hakavod to the cRc for issuing a detailed and explanatory statement of the issues rather than a blanket statement couched in terms of a ban, as seems to be the current trend.
April 12, 2011 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #967129ItcheSrulikMemberOK, it seems that “yagdil torah v’ya’adir” applies to rehashing the starbucks topic as much as anything else. 🙂
I have a new question. I don’t drink Starbucks often because they’re more expensive than the coffee I bring from home or that I can get at a grocery store. So my shayla for R’ Popa is as follows: Is the inyan of ?????? ???? counted as a mitzva where there is a mitzva of hiddur mitzva ad shlish that would obligate me to spend more money to patronize starbucks and make loud brachos where people who don’t would see me?
(For those who have trouble recognizing satire, this is it.)
April 12, 2011 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #967130SJSinNYCMemberHere is a longer quote from the article:
The article has presented the different reasons why one might adopt a strict or lenient position on the halachic issues raised, and classified the status of the different items sold in the stores. Individual Rabbis will consider these options when determining what is the appropriate kashrus standard for their community.
I’m going to ask my Rabbi what he thinks. I don’t get Starbucks very often, but my smicha expired so I can’t rule on this.
April 12, 2011 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm #967131SJSinNYCMemberUpdate from my Rabbi: I can still drink at Starbucks (obviously kosher products – so no ham sandwiches, gosh darn it).
April 12, 2011 2:31 pm at 2:31 pm #967132popa_bar_abbaParticipantItche: We are discussing the new information.
Shlishi: the next words after the box you quoted.
April 14, 2011 3:38 am at 3:38 am #967133Bar ShattyaMemberJuly 24, 2013 3:28 pm at 3:28 pm #967134popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa will be resident at the starbucks of yore where he met midwesterner for a few days now
July 24, 2013 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #967135akupermaParticipantBut it isn’t hard in most cities to find a place that sells coffee and either has a hecksher, or at least down’t all do treff – so who needs a restaurant that sells treff food as well as coffee. Not to mention it isn’t all that hard to make zero-shailoh coffee yourself, at a much lower cost.
July 24, 2013 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #967136jewishfeminist02MemberOut west, you can go to a kosher Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf– they even have kosher cold sandwiches!
July 24, 2013 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #967137always strivingParticipantpopa, I was just at this starbucks somewhere in the midwest for a few days studying, and I thought I saw you there 😉 should have came over and said hi. Or better yet I should have posted an invite here on the cr for everyone to come by!
