What would you do in the following situation:
Say you worked for a company that was laying off many workers (some of them frum). Imagine all of these workers were entitled to a large severance package that they were not aware of. Your boss decided to only give it to those who “chapped” and called to ask for it.
What would you do??? (Other than ask a shaila which I already did :-P)
March 25, 2011 4:46 am at 4:46 am #752619GrandmasterMemberPerhaps tell these former employees what they are entitled to. Obviously ask a shaila beforehand (as you’ve done.)
March 25, 2011 9:17 am at 9:17 am #752620rebdonielMemberConsult a rabbi who has semicha yadin yadin (which I am learning for at the present) and then ask a qualified attorney for what legal and governmental avenues you should pursue, if halachic.

March 25, 2011 2:57 pm at 2:57 pm #752623aries2756ParticipantIf you already asked the sheila, what was the answer?

You’re probably the type that reads the last page of a mystery first. 🙂
March 25, 2011 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #752625AinOhdMilvadoParticipantIS the OWNER frum, or only SOME of the employees are frum?
Regardless of, and with all respect for, what a rav may poskin, I’m sure the owner knows that what he is doing is wrong, so I would be very doubtful if a rov telling him so would make any difference to him.
March 25, 2011 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #752626aries2756ParticipantDY, sometimes. No just kidding. But curious as to why if someone already asked the sheilah, why come to the CR and ask what others would do. What is the point of that? To see who would do the right think according to his Rav and who does the wrong thing? Check human nature? See if he is as human as the next guy?????
Why not just come out and say, here is an interesting situation that happened to me. I asked my Rav what to do and this is what he said. I thought I would share it with the rest of you. Others can then offer their opinion and say that IS interesting I would have thought…..or thanks for telling me, I might have reacted differently if I came upon such a situation had you not told us what your Rav said, etc.
March 27, 2011 2:17 am at 2:17 am #752627☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAries,
I have no problem posting a halachic shaila and discussing it; if you’ve noticed, I’ve been involved in halachic discussions here. It’s not a
contradiction to the idea of following your rov’s psak for halacha l’meisah.
I actually think it’s dangerous to post your rov’s p’sak if anyone would take it at face value; anyone can post anything here, and even if the poster is honest, a p’sak may not be understood or applied correctly. (That was in response to I might have reacted differently if I came upon such a situation had you not told us what your Rav said
This particular shaila requires knowledge of many details to arrive at an answer, so if I had had the shaila, I don’t know if I would post my rov’s answer unless I understood which exact factors were important for his answer.
It’s also the type of shaila for which someone could offer advice, such as how to approach the boss in a non confrontational manner to discuss it.
That having been said, I really didn’t take strong issue with your comment, I meant it as a humorous comment.

March 27, 2011 3:34 am at 3:34 am #752629oomisParticipantI think that when the boss is pulling such shtick, his employees deserve to know what their rights are. Otherwise it is not only letting the boss commit a wrong, it is “lifnei iveir…” IMO.

Umm… wait for an answer?
