The cRc approves the use of whole grain quinoa for Pesach on the following conditions:
* The quinoa is imported exclusively from Bolivia.
Ancient Harvest is one of the brands that only imports quinoa from Bolivia; there may be others. The label should state the country of origin.
* The quinoa must be carefully inspected by hand before Pesach.
This is done by spreading one layer of quinoa at a time on a board or plate and checked to be sure that there are no other grains or foreign matter mixed in with the quinoa.
This does not apply to Quinoa flour which is not permitted on Passover.

It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, or grain, as it is not a member of the grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beets, spinach, and tumbleweeds.
Quinoa is grain-LIKE , not a grain so there is no problem. If you don’t want to eat, fine but it is not chametz
March 23, 2011 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #751828Mayan_DvashParticipantMordechai Schmutter talks about it briefly, in his book on Pesach, “Don’t yell Challah in a Crowded Matzah Bakery”
March 23, 2011 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #751829anon1m0usParticipantQuinoa is a berry and is a great substitute for sushi rice. Follow your own minhag, but be aware, people do eat it on Pesach; like myself.

No. Strawberries, Blueberries, Cranberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Elderberries, Snozberries, Salmonberries, Gooseberries, etc. Those are berries.
Quinoa is not one of those.
March 23, 2011 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #751831AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI got an alert from the CRC (Chicago Rabbinical Council) a recognized, widely accepted ORTHODOX hashgacha (for those that don’t know that) about this yesterday, as quoted in the first post above.
There is no reason quinoa should NOT be kosher l’Pesach as it is NOT a grain at all, nor was it ever designated in the kitniyos category.
As someone mentioned above, technically (though it looks a lot like bird seed when raw) it is related to the spinach family.
March 23, 2011 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #751832anon1m0usParticipantPopa: True, it is not a berry, but it is cooked like a berry. It is actually a seed.
