Is it legal to with hold rent to pay to a repair that your landlord is obligated to make but is refusing to?

No clue if its legal, most deninately common practice. What kind or repears are you referring to?

You might want to look here:

If a landlord breaches the warranty of habitability, the tenant may sue for a rent reduction. Alternatively, rent regulated tenants can also file a rent reduction complaint with DHCR. The tenant may also withhold rent, but in response, the landlord may sue the tenant for non-payment of rent. In such case, the tenant may countersue for breach of the warranty.

    Dear Mr. Wolf,

Please be advised that we do not post links here in the CR that are not on the Kosher Website list.

    Thank you.

The New York City Rent Guidelines website is bad????

    EDITED POST:

Perhaps you should start a thread about that.

Forget it. It’s not worth it.

If you determine that I am not allowed to point the OP to a perfectly kosher resource that will help him/her, then it’s your problem, not mine.

    Wolf,

They have been quite restrictive lately; don’t take it personally. They didn’t allow a link I posted to a teshuva written by R’ Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld on hebrewbooks.org.

Fine, so I can’t help a fellow Yid because the NYC website isn’t on some official list. Thanks for depriving me of a mitzvah guys.

1: Where can I find such list?

2: Is this due to internal or external pressure?

Im referring to the door handles on my bedroom and closet doors which often just turn in circles but don’t open the door; this is both inconvenient and causes a safety issue with the little kids which have gotten locked in the room. I was told by people to call 311 but i don’t want to go that route (hes a frum guy; and pretty decent overall).

Wolf, i found the link, thank you

Wolf. There is an old saying, he who makes the rules, gets to break the rules. Around here, we don’t make the rules. Now, if the city of NY would advertise on this site, links to the NYC website would work just fine. Kessef yaaneh es hakol.

You *don’t* love me (you don’t even know me), I *do* take it personally and I *don’t* know who’s pulling the strings.

If you’re not going to allow people to respond to the OP with the information s/he needs, why even allow him/her to post the question in the first place?

Why wouldn’t hebrewbooks.org be on that list?

shouldnt one of the goals of this website be allowing those who have info to help those who are seeing info?

there are many people who can be a wealth of knowledge and assist others here who need the help. not allowing them to help out to the best of their abilities is hampering a mitzva.

Just barely. But that’s not the real point. The point is that had the OP not been smart enough to find the link on his/her own, s/he would have been out of luck.

Look, I’m not asking for the ability to link to YouTube or anything like that, but there’s got to be an understanding that certain official information (especially non-political, non-controversial material such as rent guidelines) should be allowed. I have yet to hear a single reason from anyone as to what could possibly be unkosher about such a site.

I don’t mind following rules — even if I personally don’t agree with them — as long as I can see that there is some logical reason for the rule to be in place. Here, however, I am having trouble finding a reason why even the “frummest” moderator in the world* would object to such a link.

Wolf , it would interest you to know that on the story on the home page about contesting parking tickets someone commented on the story and posted a city website so i dont know why you are being picked on.

As of late the mods have become quite strict in not allowing links.

Some members have been complaining about the inability to share worthwhile info which cannot be “clicked & pasted” such as ?????? in PDF form.

Can Yeshiva world supply an email address where such data can be sennt similar to photo submissions?

Can someone post a link to this list of kosher websites? If not, does anyone know who is behind this list and who gives the hechsher on every site listed on that list? (the link to the list would be so much easier).

To be fair, there may be different rules for the main site and the CR. That’s fine with me, as the two parts of the site serve different functions.

At a bare minimum, can we get a list of approved sites? This way, if another question of this type comes up on the forum and I can’t post a link, I’ll know to just ignore the thread altogether.

I’d also like to hear from the mod who edited my post what is unkosher about the Rent Guildelines Board site. I’m not an unreasonable person — if you can show me that there is some logical and sensible reason why that site is bad, I’ll shut up about it — even if I disagree. But, to date, all I’ve gotten from the mod is a cutesy response of “we love you too.”

It’s legal to withhold rent, but not a good idea, because it can be held against you in court. Courts don’t look kindly on self-help, even if you were right. Consult a lawyer for the best way to handle this.

    dvorak,

    Quit changing the topic. 😉

    Wolf,

There probably was no good reason not to post your link, nor one or two of my links, but the moderator might have had many posts to approve and didn’t have time to visit your link (and mine) and check it out as well.

I want to give a yasher koach to the modorators for protecting us from shmutz.

    LuvBrooklyn-

I suggest that you go to a hardware store and buy passage doorknob sets (no lock in the handle) for about $10.00 – $12.00, and privacy doorknob sets (simple lock in the handle, such as for a bathroom) for about $12.00 – $15.00.

These are quite simple to change – you may need to do minimal chiseling for the tongue, but the knob hole is standard, and the old strikeplate will probably work fine.

If you (or a friend/relative) buys the hardware and you change it yourself, your appreciative landlord will probably be more than happy to deduct the cost from your rent.

(If he isn’t I’m sorry you’re stuck with that type of landlord.)
