This year, I bought cards from my son’s yeshiva which say:
“In lieu of ????? ????????, a donation has been made to xxxx yeshiva.”
I have been giving them out to aniyim, and my day has been so much less stressful.
Isn’t this a good idea?
March 20, 2011 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #931683Be HappyParticipantNOPE, you have to give money TODAY to a poor person to have done the mitzva. Today is such a great day – the same koach as Yom Kippur so anyone who asks for money you should give even a small coin. When we stretch out out hand and ask Hashem for what we want we also want to be answered not with a card!
March 20, 2011 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #931684popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou are not allowed to give money on Yom kippur.

March 21, 2011 4:12 am at 4:12 am #931688amichaiParticipantIt’s in lieu of mishloach manos. not matanos laevyonim. we have them in israel and they are very nice cards.

rav hamachshir: excellent.
March 21, 2011 5:53 am at 5:53 am #931690☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantpba,
You make fun, but isn’t matanos l’evyonim more of an ikar than mishloach manos? Presumably, the people who send out these cards do give mishloach manos to at least one person (probably more) and their point is that there focus, financially, as on a yeshiva, which can use the money more than their neighbor can use a bottle of grape juice which is barely enough for one cup of kiddush (better to use wine anyhow) and seven varieties of sugar made into some clever “theme”.
March 21, 2011 9:49 am at 9:49 am #931691yaff80ParticipantI am not convinced that you are yoitze matonos la’evyoinim with donations to moisdes. The mitzva is to give money to an oni. Yes moisdes are in desperate need for money, but they are not poor PEOPLE! You must give them mnoey on purim because of kol hapoishet yad noisnim lo, but you must still give money to poor people to make their purim a happier one!
The Halacha states that matanois la’evyoinim is so important that one should minimise in seuda and mishloach manos and give more matonois la’evyoinim.
I have seen – as others have mentione – people giving donations to a moisod and informing those they normallly send mishloach manos, that this year they have given a donation to tzedaka instead of sending so many packages. This fits into the halacha very well!

I’m convinced that you’re not (unless that moisad distributed food or money to evyonim on Purim).
But once one has given the minimum shiur to two evyonim, who’s to say that there’s more of a priority to davka give additional funds to evyonim rather than to worthy moisdos?
March 21, 2011 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #931693GrandmasterMemberMatanas L’evyonim and Shalach Manos are seperate mitzvos. Keep the terminology in order rather than confuse the two.
March 21, 2011 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #931694popa_bar_abbaParticipantDY:
Seems to me, that ??? instituted shalach manos because they wanted us to increase our friendships on purim, by giving each other gifts. They made a minimum of one person, but it seems they supported giving to many friends.
If you send a card in lieu of…, you have not increased friendship. What you have told the person is that he is not important enough for you to bring him something.
March 21, 2011 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #931695☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGM,
Who confused the two terms?
pba,
We’ve received those cards, and personally, I appreciated that the person acknowledged my family, and felt good that the money went to a good cause. I do understand where you’re coming from; Chaza”l dictated a specific way to show friendship. I just think it’s worthwhile to look at it positively (although I personally give food for mishloach manos and cards for birthdays :).
March 21, 2011 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #931696SJSinNYCMemberI like the cards. My cousins in Israel sent one to us and it created a nice, warm feeling. I really appreciated knowing that I am now involved in an additional mitzvah, rather than accepting junk food I don’t want.
March 21, 2011 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #931697gavra_at_workParticipantKol HaPoshet Yad Nosenim Lo.
Even if you would do something like this, you would still have to give to an Ani that asks.
March 21, 2011 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #931698commonsenseParticipantwhy does everyone pick on mishoach monos? People spend much much more on clothing and food for yomim tovim like succos and certainly pesach and we laud them and tell them that money spent on a mitzah will be returned. We make spending more on the arba minim seem like a neccesity. buying judaica items in silver is the norm, yet if someone chooses to honor the mitzah of mishloach monos in a nice way they are villified? Each of you do what you want and stop telling other people how they should be mekayem the mitzvos as long as they are doing so al pi halacha.
March 22, 2011 2:08 am at 2:08 am #931699Shticky GuyParticipantpba: you should have also invited a hundred people for the purim ????? and in everyone’s place instead of cutlery and plates just put a card with the message “I made a donation to ???? X”. Then get out of there while you still can!!
Boy, with the money you save on a ????? ? with wine for a hundred people just think how much ???? you could be giving to your ?????!!
