uniforms are such a good idea bec theres no peer pressure, etc… anyone agree or disagree?
March 9, 2011 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #748585ha ha ha haMembersome chasidishe mosdos don’t agree e.g satmar since they claim it brings an eiy hora when people see many girls dressed the same
on another note i was just wondering why boys don’t have a uniform too it would make life so much easier
March 9, 2011 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #748587GrandmasterMemberSatmar probably doesn’t need a uniform, as the girls b”h wont be dressing all over the map in the first place.
Boys don’t need a uniform, as there b”h isn’t much variance in dress between them in the first place.
March 9, 2011 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #748588ItcheSrulikMemberThere should be.
March 9, 2011 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #748589guy-ochoMemberThe only reason i like the idea of uniforms is because otherwise it would take an average of 6 hours for my teenage daughter to leave to school, deciding what she wants to wear. I think its worth the trade-off.
March 9, 2011 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm #748590hanibParticipantproblem with uniform is that girls, if want to, can have whole wardrobe of untznious clothing instead of learning how to buy and dress tzniously. good part is it’s easier to decide what to wear in the morning and eliminates some competition, as you said.
March 9, 2011 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm #748591nfgo3MemberThe Torah gives a dress code, but it also recognizes that we have free will, and it is up to us to follow the dress code of the Torah. Uniforms are either a pedagogical device or a substitute for good judgment, and an important part of chinuch is to develop self-control and good judgment in the exercise of free will.
March 9, 2011 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm #748592apushatayidParticipantWhite shirt, black pants is a de facto uniform. So much so, that my son who wears light blue shirts and blue pants is considered the class goy
March 9, 2011 11:16 pm at 11:16 pm #748593bptParticipant“my son who wears light blue shirts”
I hear you. I bought my son a white shirt with blue stitching around the button holes, and he turned it down (his words: the “3rd year guys would hassle me”)
March 9, 2011 11:31 pm at 11:31 pm #748594WolfishMusingsParticipantMy daughter went from a school with a strict uniform to one that has none. In fact, her school emphasizes dressing comfortably and casual. Denim skirts and T-shirts/sweatshirts (all of appropriate length, of course) are the *preferred* mode of dress. The student handbook discourages wearing fancy or elaborate clothing.
Personally, I think it’s a very good thing. It’s training her to learn how to dress within halachic guidelines while still being able to express her individuality. The fact that the girls *don’t* compete with fancy outfits and are encouraged to be casual and comfortable helps to avoid the competitive “fashion show” environment.
All I can say is this — my daughter does not have fancy clothes, but she has never complained to us that she feels like she’s dressed worse than anyone else at school.

Was that directed at me?
And, if so, please explain what, exactly, you think is “nebach.”

March 10, 2011 2:52 am at 2:52 am #748597commonsenseParticipantUniforms definitely make life easier, but why do they have to be so expensive? We are sort of held captive, paying top dollar for something that we have no choice about. High school uniform skirts can run over $50 and the sweaters are over $30. Regarding the white shirts, I would love to know who decided that boys should wear white shirts especially those still in elementary school? It used to be that boys did not put on white shirts until high school and now it’s right after bar mitzva. How many teen age boys can keep white shirts clean a whole day?! why can’t we let kids be kids while they are still kids? What is our rush to make them into adults so soon? I just heard of a Yeshiva where the boys put white shirts on at 12 years old, soon it will be in nursery to show what serious learners are pre schooler are.
March 10, 2011 4:37 am at 4:37 am #748598GrandmasterMembercommonsense: They become adults at 13 regardless of their shirt. And you don’t have to be an adult to wear a white shirt. It’s mentchlich either way.
March 10, 2011 5:53 am at 5:53 am #748599commonsenseParticipantwhat makes it mentchlich to wear a white shirt? especially boys who cannot keep clean? Is walking around with a dirty shirt mentchlich?
March 10, 2011 7:11 am at 7:11 am #748600BasYisroel94ParticipantI love wearing a uniform! There’s no competition, no fashion parade, and no reason to spend ages in the morning trying to figure out what to wear!
All in all, if I knew the person who invented uniforms, I’d…. (someone help me here, I don’t have such a great imagination 🙂
March 10, 2011 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #748601cooljudeMemberi think the uniform fee should be included in tuition!…..

March 11, 2011 3:20 am at 3:20 am #748605bygirl93Member1st of all as a girl shopping for sem clothes now- which would b the type of clothes most schools who dont have uniforms wear- it is def cheaper then my uniform! uniforms r rlly expensive and then u have to buy regular weekday clothes on top of that! without a uniform its also easier to find things on sale or out of season that u culd buy for much cheaper- thats perf. for school but uniforms r never on sale! but on the other hand- i have a uniform and rlly dont mind it! we have a lot of leeway (sry if i spelled it wrong) when it comes to accesories, tights, shoes, etc.- i would rlly say whether uniforms r gud or not depends on where u r holding in life! 🙂

That’s not what I was saying nebach to.
March 11, 2011 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #748608SJSinNYCMemberI had a uniform in elementary school. I totally didn’t mind but they are expensive.
In high school I didn’t have a uniform but wore the same few things anyway. So I had a self imposed uniform LOL.
Honestly, I think its a waste.

You spelled “leeway” correctly, but you have at least 15 other spelling mistakes. 😉
