Do you also perceive them as having a very good health, marriage, kids and doing well financially? (Birchas Gefen- Gezunt Parnasa Nachas)

Do the people you perceive as happiest (or among the happiest), have the main ingredients society views as those that most people strive for in life?

No names of course, a description of who you perceive to be the happiest person you know, would be nice.

Has it ever happened that the person you thought was happiest was revealed to be unhappy (as in Richard Cory)?

The happiest person that I knew was a guy who truly internalized the maxim of “Who is rich, one who is satisfied with his lot.”

He wasn’t rich, but he wasn’t exactly in crushing poverty either. He was happy with what he had, grateful to both his human and Heavenly benefactors for what he had and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

You’re right. It’s possible that the person I was describing was not *really* happy. But unless you have evidence to the contrary, why would you suppose that the person I was speaking of was NOT truly happy?

the question was asked, an answer was given… why try to rip apart someone’s opinion… just for the sake of argument or to be contrary? :/

canine, you’re 1000% right!!! I guess I can change it to:

Do the people you perceive as happiest (or among the happiest), have the main ingredients society SHOULD view as those that most people SHOULD strive for in life?

The consistently happiest person I ever knew was my stepfather. He was very pleased by everything that anyone would do for him. He didn’t stay mad at anyone very long. He was always happy to be there, wherever there was. He was always pleased by his wife, family, situation, etc. I only very rarely heard him complain.

Those who offered people who they thought were happy/satisfied, from what you know of them, do you think they were always this way, or did they work on themselves?

I once heard Rabbi Hanoch Teller speak, and he said that a wise person once told him, “The happiest people I know are people I don’t know well.” There’s a lot of truth to that statement. Everyone has their challenges in life–you just might not know it about people you aren’t close with. OTOH, the way people handle their challenges is what will determine how happy they are.

Canine: Happy ppl can be sad too at times. La Kol Zeman Veais. There’s a time to mourn and be sad too. I think that if you have a positive outlook in life, you’re a happy person.

Happiness is something to strive for. It’s a Middah to be learned. I’m also trying.
