February 18, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #760198stamagoyMemberwhts wrong with going to a movie theater
helllloooo where have you been your whole life????
you watch movies?????????
watching movies is terrible and going to theaters is even worse its Chukas Hagoyim
While I basically agree with you, there is a proper way of expressing this idea. Very sadly, many, if not most, living in America have become totally de-sensitized to what is wrong with viewing most movies and TV, and so do NOT see it as “terrible” at all.
They don’t realize, for example, that even if you are watching a TV show or movie that MIGHT, in and of itself, be OK to watch, it’s VERY likely that along with it, one will see commercials or “coming attractions” that are NOT ok at all. We need to stress this in the chinuch to our children and re-sensitize ourselves to what is appropriate for a Torah Jew to see, and what is not. Just “yelling” at someone (with lots of exclamation points and question marks) will not make your point.-YW- Mod.
February 18, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #760199aries2756Participantwhy do you ask the question? Do you go to movies? Do you want to go? Are you asking to question why others go?
February 18, 2011 9:40 pm at 9:40 pm #760200mnchm12Memberit is true that, yes some movies are not for us. but there are movies that are not bad at all.
some people dont want to see movies in general, as it is goyish and that is fine with me.
bottom line is that movies arent good and movies arent bad, just people have different views about these things.
personally i have watched many movies and im normal. it depends
February 19, 2011 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #760201ramateshkolianMemberIsn’t there an issur about going to places of the goyim? I forgot rashi’s exact language on the pasuk but I think it seems that movie theaters would fit the bill. Anyone remember this Rashi?
February 20, 2011 12:12 am at 12:12 am #760202gradaMemberi think that if everyone would first know wat they are talking about before they start posting things about how bad movies are, people would be much happier. True, there are some movies out there that have terrible things, however so does the internet and you all obviously use the internet. You have to have a certain shmira for yourself which you keep to.
February 20, 2011 12:28 am at 12:28 am #760203passion4musicMemberIt seems as if chayav is asking this question because he hears around him people saying how bad it is and that they don’t go. I assume he just wants to know WHY.
When I was younger we always went to the movies, the school didn’t like it but they didn’t forbid it. Once I was applying to high school they forbade it and ever since then my family hasn’t gone. I always figured once I got out of high school ill go, but I didn’t. You see things differently once you grow up.
February 20, 2011 12:42 am at 12:42 am #760204HaKatanParticipantComparing movies to the Internet is like comparing a Bais Zona to an apartment complex.
In each side of the two cases, one could find pritzus. But in each, as well, there is far more in one side than the other.
In other words, while the Internet contains both good and bad, as does any place where large numbers of humans exist like an apartment complex, any modern movie as well as a bais zona will definitely have unkosher material in it.
I think the mod made an excellent point about being desensitized to this stuff; just because society conducts itself in a very liberal manner does not ch”V change halacha.
Also, if one reads only the reviews of the movies currently out there (without even watching anything), there is no way any halachic Jew could justify such a debased and pathetic excuse for “the arts”. I don’t want to quote titles, but it is already beyond absurd; I don’t need to see the movies themselves to know it is not for any good Jewish boy or girl (yes, girls, too) to watch.
Even in a “normal” (by society’s standards) movie, there are too many potential issues to mention in even a few sentences, and the actresses’ inappropriate attire is not even the tip of the iceberg.
As with any halachic question, if in doubt, ask your LOR.

Ever heard of a non-animated movie without girls in short sleeves or above the knee skirts or no inter-gender touching?
February 20, 2011 1:25 am at 1:25 am #760206hudiParticipantFor those who weren’t aware – Chayav is female.
Chazal warned that going to a theater is against “v’bechukoseichem lo’ saylaychu.”
Rav Feinstein z”l said it is considered a chillul Hashem.
Then there is the issue of the content.
February 20, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am #760207chayav inish livisumayParticipantYW MOD-i think screaming with a lot of question marks and exclamation points makes a bigger impact then talking sensibly
but thx anyways.
since when has it been the mods job to teach us manners??? ur job is to edit innapropriate posts!!!
by the way stamagoy is my sister she was doing that for shtick
why are all of u asking whether i go or not what difference does that make???? please answer the question
When I need instructions as to what my job is, I’ll be sure to let you know. As far as an answer to your original question, several comments have already answered it, but perhaps you, like your “sister” are only interested in “shtick”, and NOT really interested in an answer. – YW-Mod.

April 13, 2011 2:38 am at 2:38 am #760211brotherofursParticipanti don’t think i agree not to go to movies because you’ll see women in short sleeves because then you can’t go anywhere-you never know when you’ll see maybe a cashier by a store dressed like that or a police woman, ANYONE. .. i still think movies are horrible and wrong. Once you see it, it is extremely hard to get the image out of your head. The Goyyim mess with our minds into thinking things that they do in movies are all right,ex. making fun of people. 🙁
April 13, 2011 4:08 am at 4:08 am #760213HealthParticipantbrotherofurs – That’s your mistake. We are allowed to live normally and do normal things like going out shopping, even if we end up seeing things we shouldn’t. But why does a person Need to watch a movie?
April 13, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #760215smartlittlecookieMemberCmon most people do watch movies however, goin into a movie theater is a bit low. Watch it at home! cant you wait till it comes out on dvd? doesnt that show somethign about you that you mamish cant wait for the movie to come and and you must watch it? thats were the problem starts thats number one. number 2 is that when goin to a theater your mamish entering a guyisha enviroment. your doing exactly what the guy does and putting yourslef into there typ of life style. Se braing nisht tzi kein gitz!
April 13, 2011 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #760216shlishiMemberWatching it at home is just as treif. Theaters obviously have additional aveiros, but all the main ones apply when watching at home.

I guess you haven’t seen the classic 1957 movie “12 Angry Men.” There are no women in the cast at all.

There are females dressed appropriately by gentile standards, but not according to our stricter standards, on every city block in New York. But we don’t imprison ourselves.
I rarely go to movies, and don’t have a television, but there are some brilliant movies that are worth seeing. We often buy them online, download them, and watch them on the computer.
April 13, 2011 11:14 pm at 11:14 pm #760220brotherofursParticipanthealth i just said THAT shouldn’t be the reason for not watching a movie. There are much worse outcomes from watching a movie then seeing a girl in short sleeves. (okay i guess you can for sure include it though)
April 13, 2011 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #760221Joseph / clark-kentMemberTheWolf: There are few such films; representing less than 1/10,000th of all movies. When someone goes to a theater or rents a DVD you can be almost virtually certain that is not it.
CharlieHall: We don’t sit on a street corner and watch the women passing by, for an hour and a half.
Brother: THAT *should* be a reason not to watch (in addition to your other reasons). It is bad enough on its own.

Why? Is there something inherent in the act of viewing pictures at the rate of 30 per second that causes one to distance themselves from HaShem regardless of the content (as you claim)?
The Wolf
April 14, 2011 2:39 am at 2:39 am #760223pumperMemberPeople who habitually watch movies will not even realize that there is something wrong with it. This is because the mentality of the goyim have seeped into your mind and warped your thought processes.
In order to regain the yiddishe mentality, one would have to distance themselves from watching videos, and only the will they see how much harm is done.

That’s correct. But you never see her testify and she never appears in the movie. You only see the all-male jury discussing her testimony.

April 14, 2011 10:43 am at 10:43 am #760226hanibParticipantgoing to a clean movie is worse than internet?
i don’t go to movies and i don’t download movies from the internet.
the whole issue of movies came out way before internet even existed. in olden days, they were very clean (still not kodesh by any means) and many, not all, people watched. then, started to get worse and worse, VCR came out, and more yeshivish people did not go to movie theater nor own a VCR.
then, internet came along. definitely problematic to have internet. my belief (and i definitely understand other side) is that internet is here to stay and need it for many things (for jobs, banks, etc. etc.) – so trick is to use it properly.
whether the yeshiva cr brings people up or down in kedushah is for each person to decide.
along with all issues of kedushah, people have to ask themselves – does it bring them closer to Hashem or further away.
going to movie theater – may be issue of going to places where goyim go (see torah temimah on megilas rus, where rus says – “i will go where you go”.
other problem of movie theater is the environment itself is not exactly wholesome nor place of kedusha, so downloading a clean video seems to me to be the better option.
others, will not download any movie for the kedusha factor (very important, but very individual – where person is coming from)
April 14, 2011 12:31 pm at 12:31 pm #760227EloQuint5Memberthe way the question was asked, OP wasn’t looking for an answer, only controversy. look at where he/she/it inserts commentary and you’ll see he/she/it was just trying to “tchepper”. you can tell a lot based on the way a person asks a question, as a matter of fact, the haggadah touches upon it…
@Wolf: show me a theater that’s showing Twelve Angry Men and i’ll show you a very surprised facial expression. You’d be surprised. I don’t know of a theather that’s showing TAM right now, but there are plenty of theaters around NYC that show old movies.
When Eeees and I saw Gone With the Wind (a 1939 movie), we saw it in a theater. They even showed a civil-war themed Bugs Bunny cartoon beforehand!*

* It was common practice back in the day to show an animated cartoon or two before the main feature.

No, watching a movie is inherently no worse than reading a book. However, the vast, vast majority of movies have either inappropriate images, so-called “morals” in direct conflict with those given to us by the Torah, or both. So seeing as 99% of movies are inappropriate for a frum person, some have taken the prudent move of not watching any movies at all.

That’s fine… I don’t have any argument with someone who discriminates based on content… we all do that — even if we don’t agree where, exactly, to draw the line. Stuffed Cabbage’s post made it seem like the very medium itself distances one from HKBH, regardless of the content. That was my challenge to him/her.

April 18, 2011 2:54 am at 2:54 am #760238Joseph / clark-kentMemberExactly. If you see it on the street you are an Ones. You didn’t set out to see it. And when and if you do c’v see it, you should turn away from it asap. Watching a movie otoh, you are setting out to see it. You know its going to be there. And you are fixated to the screen. And you are not turning away when it happens. (And it will be often. And even if theoretically you would turn away every time it popped up, it’s not an excuse as you knew it would happen so you can’t put yourself in the position of seeing it even momentarly in the first place.)
