Why is there such an epidemic of drivers failing to yield to pedestrians who have the right-of-way? (i.e. when a pedestrian is crossing on green while the driver is turning on green.) I’m not c”v insinuating that this is more prevelant in frum communities, but it is epidemic even by us, and we should be the first to do the right thing.
I strongly believe unmarked police officers should greatly increase surprise enforcement action on this issue and ticket drivers. I say this as a heavy driver. We are all pedestrians.
February 16, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #743538em0616MemberWhat about all the ladies strolling with baby carriages, and talking on cell phones at the same time,
and walking through every red light in boro park? And the children see us adults walking against red lights, this is great chinuch for them!
February 16, 2011 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #743539workingbubbyMemberI always know when I am out of NY. Drivers actually stop to let you cross!
February 16, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #743540canineMemberA few additional examples are when a driver has a stop sign and fails to yield to pedestrians, or a pedestrian is crossing through a cross-walk that has no traffic signals.
February 16, 2011 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #743541truth be toldMemberYou can’t do that unless you ticket the crossers who cross on red in front of cars…
February 16, 2011 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm #743542HaLeiViParticipantIf you want to know the reason, it is because basically, three or four cars get to go through a green light. When you have to get someplace, it really plays with your nerves when you must stop every six feet. This is not an excuse, but it is a reason.
Also, if the car can’t turn he will have to wait another half a minute till he can think of trying again, while a pedestrian only has to wait till that car turns. I rarely get stuck when walking because of turning cars, and I totally understand those who turn right in front of me. It is usually at most 4 cars. There is ample time to cross.
February 16, 2011 10:08 pm at 10:08 pm #743543canineMemberIt is not a matter of delaying the pedestrian for for a few seconds. It is a matter of life and death. This is how accidents happen. (Especially when the driver turns at a high rate of speed.)
February 16, 2011 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #743544real-briskerMemberWhy does this bother you more than any other driving rule? Running red lights, running stop signs, speeding, talking on cell phone, no seat belt…?
February 16, 2011 10:31 pm at 10:31 pm #743545canineMemberThis is more epidemic. And threatens more lives in city driving. Red light running is just as bad, and too should be cracked down on. Speeding, cell phone, etc. as well.
February 18, 2011 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #743546canineMemberIn addition to all the good reasons mentioned to yield to pedestrians, including most notably life and death, another good reason is because… it is the law.
February 18, 2011 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #743547truth be toldMembercanine: Please realize that all drivers are pedestrians as well. Once you park your car, you end up walking to your destination.
Now, what percentage of pedestrians, in NY, wait for a walking signal? Once you’ve solved the problem of cars being held up by pedestrians, who are violating the law.. L&D etc, then you can go about solving the problem of turning. Its circular.
If you notice, in NYC and other very populous locales, the other light does not turn green with the first turning red. There is a 2-3 second wait time where both lights are red. In less populous areas, when one turns red, the other turns green. Think about why it is that way.
February 18, 2011 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #743548canineMember2 wrongs don’t make a right. Because some pedestrians jaywalk or violate the law, does not allow drivers to break the law and risk the lives of (other) pedestrians.
February 18, 2011 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #743549truth be toldMemberIs it only some pedestrians? Which city are you talking about, that has a problem of all cars and only some pedestrians?
February 18, 2011 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #743550canineMemberEven if we grant that it is all (which it isn’t), a driver STILL does not have a right to violate the traffic laws — and kill pedestrians.
February 18, 2011 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #743551truth be toldMemberNeither do pedestrians have the right to violate the law, and cause ..C”V.
So now that you demand only drivers not violate the law, you would end up having traffic backed for miles, as very few cars can turn on busy roads during the day (always full of pedestrians). A solution has to be for the problem, not the outgrowths
February 18, 2011 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #743552canineMemberPedestrians ineed have no right to violate the law. No one said otherwise. But if they do, that does not justify drivers from violating the laws and causing injury and death as a result.
February 18, 2011 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #743553the.nurseMemberLike tbt said, a lot of time pedestrians are the ones at fault, by crossing against a light or by crossing without looking.
I’ve written this before on the CR, but as a teenager i once ran across an avenue, failing to look to my right, and ended up getting hit by a car. Completely my fault. The driver did no wrong.
Recovery took months & P/T took years.
Both driver & pedestrian have to be careful, and make sure in each situation, the blame is placed where it should be, without automatically faulting the other guy.
Of course, H-shm is the ultimate master of all, and nothing happens without a reason.
February 18, 2011 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #743554chayav inish livisumayParticipanti think this would be the stupidest thing to ticket people for. we get ticketed enough!!!!
Why should i have to pay 200 bucks because a pedestrian had to wait 30 seconds????????
February 18, 2011 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #743555ZeesKiteParticipantI have a VERY serious question?
Do carriages (with baby on board) constitute pedestrians?
I mean the carriages pushed into the street ahead of senseless individuals – to test the waters. Does a driver have to yield to them too.
February 23, 2011 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #743556canineMemberOne point I’m confident everyone agrees with, is that when a thuggish driver who is making a right turn while pedestrians are crossing and illegally pushes his way through before the pedestrians who are crossing, should be issued a bloody summons with a backbreaking fine and points for that life threatening incident.
February 23, 2011 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #743557ZeesKiteParticipantYou’re too graphic!
