When I was young I was told that singing Ayshes Chayil was done as a praise of teh wife. Later in life I was told that it is sung to honor Shabbos.
Anyone have the facts on this one?
Thanks

it is sung in honor of Shabbos
it is sung in honor of the Torah, this is probably the primary pshat even though the words seem to be referring to a woman
(similar to Shir Ha Shirim)
that is why even unmarried men and boys sing it
February 16, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #741235popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t sing it. I would rather eat now. Then, after the meal, I would rather sleep. In the morning, I would rather daven, then eat, then sleep, then daven, then eat, etc.

That is the problem with people today. They would “rather not” do things.
If you look at my post, it was all things that I would “rather do”. I never said anything I would “rather not”.
The wife should not say that she would “rather not” serve, the same way I don’t say I would “rather not” go to shul.

Depending on how your cooking is, I might also.

Then she served the guests.

February 16, 2011 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm #741246aries2756ParticipantAlthough it was not written about women, it is customary to sing it to honor the wife and it is a beautiful thing. It is also customary to sing to the Kallah at a wedding. So because it is customary it should be done with pride and with Kavona which makes a wife feel special and appreciated.
I also feel like I would rather not serve if it is too difficult for the men in the home to praise me. After all, there is a lot of hard work involved in preparing for Shabbos and getting to the point of all of us sitting down to the beautiful Shabbos table. So singing Aishel Chayil is a very simple and beautiful way to start off the Shabbos meal.

I always thought that this is basic.
